4960 Miles

We started this blog in 2011 while moving from Berlin, Germany to Greater Vancouver, Canada. The blog name was the distance between both cities, which now isn't the same anymore. In 2016 we became Canadian citizens in addition to our German citizenship. Around the same time Andreas was offered a move to the States (transfer within the same company he already was with in Canada) and so we moved to Greater Denver, Colorado, where we now live pretty rural in the Foothills of the Rockies. We love to travel as one can see in our blog posts.

Mayo, YT (road trip day 47)

As I mentioned in the previous post, last night we drove all the way to Mayo where we spent the night at Nils' place. Nils is a German who usually spends the time from end of May to the end of October/ beginning of November at his lot in Mayo. One can book his trailer as accommodation, him for guided tours by car, and even take a tour with his piper. If you are interested please contact Nils through his facebook page (German)

We chatted a long time the evening we arrived, and in the morning we were welcomed with a hearty German breakfast. When we all were ready, Nils took as for a tour through Mayo.

Hier mal ein paar Fotos von seinem Grundstueck/ some photos of Nils' lot

in the meantime the hangar got sliding doors and can be fully closed

Nils recent task was to finish the vault toilet and the outdoor shower

the container was converted into Nils primary accommodation

In Mayo one can find a lot of old building, unfortunately most of them aren't in a good shape.

Nils was in the last stages of a cold, and since a few days later a paying guest would arrive where he had planned some guided tours and flights, we said goodbye. We continued our drive to Whitehorse. But I still would like to mention that close to Mayo is another historic site, Keno City. It might be nice to visit there as well, but since we had rain in the forecast for the afternoon (and we already could see the dark clouds) we weren't in the mood for driving another 70 kms gravel road and having the camper all muddy again.

At Pelly Crossing we enjoyed the great view of the river.

We stopped at the Big Jonathan House where one can learn about the Selkirk First Nation.

Next stop was at the Five Finger Rapids, but due to the cold and high winds we refrained from going down all the stairs.

und immer wieder gab es Regenschauer/ we had on and off rain

Close to Carmacks the remains of the Montague Roadhouse can be found, a former guest house along the route from Dawson City to Whitehorse.

We drove up to Fox Lake CG where we found a campsite right at the lake. Unfortunately that nasty, cold wind was still on and so we didn't sit outside very long.
