We started this blog in 2011 while moving from Berlin, Germany to Greater Vancouver, Canada. The blog name was the distance between both cities, which now isn't the same anymore. In 2016 we became Canadian citizens in addition to our German citizenship. Around the same time Andreas was offered a move to the States (transfer within the same company he already was with in Canada) and so we moved to Greater Denver, Colorado, where we now live pretty rural in the Foothills of the Rockies. We love to travel as one can see in our blog posts.

Fruehlingsferien 2020/ spring break 2020

or a better headline " The vacation which never happened"

We all had been looking forward to this trip for a very long time, and I've spent countless hours with planning the route, sights, hotels etc. But it became more and more obviously that this planned trip isn't going to happen. We had planned to fly to the US East Coast and have a road trip, that was already for a long time on our wish list. But we anticipated that shops, restaurants etc will close very soon since it already started in Europe. First, the Coronavirus only happened in China, but now it was spreading rapidly across the rest of the world. We were still hoping to do this vacation since we would spend a lot of time in nature, but in the end, sense defeated heart, and we cancelled everything. About a week before leaving we canceled the rental car, all hotels, and the flight to Charlotte. Since this flight was booked with Southwest, that was easy and no penalty fees etc. For the flight back home from Charlotte to Denver with United it got really complicated. We finally resolved the problem on 4/5, got all our points back and didn't have to pay a penalty either.

day 11: return flight to Denver

We also had to learn that we can't do the planned road trip in summer. We wanted to do a 7 weeks camping road trip, driving through the northern part of the US over to the East Coast. Long anticipated destinations were Gettysburg and Acadia National Park. We wanted to cross the border into Canada with exploring Nova Scotia & Cape Breton, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Quebec and Ontario. We had planned to see several friends we haven't seen in years. All that is now not possible anymore. We saved up a lot of vacation time for this trip, sat weeks over planning the routes, what to see, where to sleep etc.

When I expressed on facebook that this would make me sad, a facebook aquaintance became really nasty. I don't think that even in this time people have to be allowed to be sad over lost vacation dreams, dreams to meet people one hasn't seen in a long time etc. No one has any right to belittle other ones feelings. I was okay with her hysteria since everyone deals with lemons in life in a different way. But I don't have to accept being insulted from a person who doesn't even knows me in real life. I hope, she's in a better mental state now, the virus and its effects will still be around for some more time. And feeling sad about something doesn't mean that we (or others) don't take all this seriously enough. We see the effects in our daily life as well in the lives of other, especially during volunteering. We are aware of any risks, especially since I'm classified as a person at risk due to a health condition of mine.
