Along the way, we came across a small, fenced-in park, so we took the chance to let Pirate run off-leash for a bit.

Here, a path led into the forest, and we welcomed the shade along the historic route.
Later, we had a picnic by a small lake.
We had already noticed on the way to the lake that an accident had occurred. However, everyone involved was standing outside their vehicles, so we didn't think much of it. But when we wanted to get back onto the highway, two sheriff's cars and an ambulance were on the scene, and we had to wait a while until the sheriff gave us the go-ahead to leave the area by driving past the ambulance.

In the evening, we decided to stay at the campsite and take it easy for the next two days. By then, the symptoms of the torn ligament were becoming increasingly apparent. My foot now looked just like the one in this photo from the internet. Online research revealed a healing time of 6–12 weeks—yippieh :-(.
