road trip 04 - 05/2026: Navajo National Monument, AZ (day 18)

 Am Sonntag besuchten wir das Navajo National Monument. Hier befinden sich drei gut erhaltene Felsbehausungen der Ancestral-Puebloan-Kultur: Keet Seel (Broken Pottery/ Kitsʼiil), Betatakin (Ledge House/ Bitátʼahkin) und Inscription House (Tsʼah Biiʼ Kin). Inscription House kann nicht besichtigt werden, da der Trail dorthin dauerhaft geschlossen wurde, aus Angst vor Zerstörung. Keet Seel erfordert eine Anmeldung für eine Wanderung mit einem Ranger, da sie 27 Kilometer lang ist und eine Übernachtung erfordert. Betatakin kann man von einem Aussichtspunkt sehr einfach anschauen, aber zu bestimmten Terminen auch mit einem Ranger hinwandern, der Weg ist recht steil und je nach Route zwischen 5 und 8 Kilometern lang.

On Sunday, we visited the Navajo National Monument. It is home to three well-preserved cliff dwellings of the Ancestral Puebloan culture: Keet Seel (Broken Pottery/Kitsʼiil), Betatakin (Ledge House/Bitátʼahkin), and Inscription House (Tsʼah Biiʼ Kin). Inscription House cannot be visited because the trail leading to it has been permanently closed due to concerns about potential damage. Visiting Keet Seel requires signing up for a ranger-led hike, as the trek covers 27 kilometers and necessitates an overnight stay. Betatakin can easily be viewed from an overlook, but it is also possible to hike there with a ranger on certain dates; the trail is quite steep and ranges from 5 to 8 kilometers in length, depending on the route.

Im Besucherzentrum holten wir uns eine Übersichtskarte und schauten uns auch die Ausstellung an.

We picked up an overview map at the visitor center and also took a look at the exhibition.

Am Besucherzentrum findet man auch einen verkleinerten Nachbau eines Schwitzhauses und eines Hogans. 

Im Schwitzhaus wurde in einem Feuerring aus Steinen mit Holz ein Feuer angezündet und der Eingang mit einer Decke abgedeckt. Durch das schwitzen, wurden die Menschen vom Dreck auf der Haut gereinigt, Wasser gab es in der Gegend hier naemlich wenig.

At the visitor center, you can also find a scaled-down replica of a sweat house and a hogan.

Inside the sweat lodge, a wood fire was lit within a stone fire ring, and the entrance was covered with a blanket. Sweating cleansed the people of dirt on their skin, as water was scarce in the area.

Ein Hogan war die traditionelle Hauptwohnstätte der Navajo (Diné) im Südwesten der USA. Diese kuppelförmigen Bauten wurden typischerweise aus Holzpfosten oder Stein errichtet und mit Erde verkleidet; ihr Eingang ist nach Osten ausgerichtet, um die aufgehende Sonne zu begrüßen.

A hogan was the traditional primary dwelling of the Navajo (Diné) in the southwestern United States. These dome-shaped structures were typically built of wooden posts or stone and covered with earth; their entrances faced east to welcome the rising sun.

Vom Besucherzentrum gehen drei Wanderwege los. Wir starteten mit dem Weg zum Betatakin Dwelling. Der Weg ist behindertengerecht und ein 1,6-Kilometer-Rundtrip.

Three hiking trails start from the visitor center. We began with the trail to Betatakin Pueblo. The trail is accessible and is a 1-mile  round trip.

Als Nächstes folgten wir dem Aspen Trail. Dieser ist 1.3 Kilometer lang und es geht rund 100 Meter recht steil runter. Den fanden meine Knie nicht so toll, aber nun gut :-).

Next, we followed the Aspen Trail. It is 0.8 miles long and descends quite steeply—about 300ft. My knees didn't exactly love it, but oh well :-).

Und als Letztes nahmen wir den Canyon View Trail, der ebenfalls ein 1,3-Kilometer-Rundweg ist. Nach ca. 400 m mussten wir jedoch umdrehen. Es waren zwar nur rund 25 Grad aufgrund der Höhe, aber es gab keinerlei Schatten, und Pirate zeigte uns, dass er erledigt war. Als ein Baum kam, hat er sich hingelegt und das war's. Wir haben dann ca. 10 Min. gewartet, bis er etwas abgekühlt war, und sind dann zurück zum Auto gegangen, Pirate hat Vorrang.

Finally, we took the Canyon View Trail, a 0.8-mile loop. However, we had to turn back after about 250 yards. Although the temperature was only around 78F due to the altitude, there was absolutely no shade, and Pirate made it clear he was done. When we reached a tree, he simply lay down, and that was that. We waited about 10 minutes for him to cool down a bit and then headed back to the car—Pirate comes first.

We then drove back to the campsite.

Wir hatten dann eine ruhige Zeit am Camper bei bestem Wetter.

We then had a quiet time by the camper in perfect weather.

road trip 04 - 05/2026: Canyon de Chelly National Monument, AZ (day 17)

 Am Samstag fuhren wir zum Canyon de Chelly National Monument, das wir ebenfalls schon länger auf unserer Wunschliste hatten.

Der Canyon de Chelly befindet sich vollständig im Besitz des Navajo Tribal Trust der Navajo Nation. Es ist die einzige vom National Park Service verwaltete Stätte, die auf diese Weise in Privatbesitz ist und gemeinschaftlich verwaltet wird. Derzeit leben etwa 40 Navajo-Familien im Park und betreiben dort weiterhin Landwirtschaft. Der Zugang zum Talboden ist eingeschränkt; Besucher dürfen sich in den Canyons nur in Begleitung eines Parkrangers oder eines autorisierten Navajo-Guides bewegen.Die einzige Ausnahme von dieser Regel ist der White House Ruin Trail, auf dem man von der Kante der Schlucht hinunter auf den Boden wandern und dort die Überreste einer Siedlung direkt ansehen kann.

Der Park kann einfach mit dem Auto besichtigt werden, allerdings auf zwei verschiedenen Routen: dem Nord-Rim und dem Süd-Rim; an beiden gibt es verschiedenste Aussichtspunkte.

Wir kamen mittags an und starteten mit dem Süd-Rim, da es hier mehr Haltepunkte gibt.

On Saturday, we drove to Canyon de Chelly National Monument, a place that had long been on our wish list.

Canyon de Chelly is owned entirely by the Navajo Nation’s Navajo Tribal Trust. It is the only site managed by the National Park Service that is privately owned and jointly managed in this way. Currently, about 40 Navajo families live within the park and continue to farm the land there. Access to the canyon floor is restricted; visitors may only explore the canyons when accompanied by a park ranger or an authorized Navajo guide. The only exception to this rule is the White House Ruin Trail, which allows you to hike from the canyon rim down to the floor and view the remains of a settlement up close.

The park can easily be toured by car, though there are two separate routes—the North Rim and the South Rim—each offering a variety of viewpoints.

We arrived at midday and started with the South Rim, as it has more stops along the way.

Canyon de Chelly ist berühmt für den Spider Rock, eine Sandsteinnadel, die sich  230 Meter vom Talboden erhebt. Spider Rock ist vom South Rim Drive aus zu sehen. Er diente bereits als Schauplatz für eine Reihe von Fernsehwerbespots. Ich hab mich wie ein kleines Kind gefreut, als ich diese Formation gesehen hab.

Canyon de Chelly is famous for Spider Rock, a sandstone spire that rises 230 meters from the canyon floor. Spider Rock can be seen from South Rim Drive. It has served as the setting for several television commercials. I was as excited as a little kid when I saw this formation.

Von hier aus ging es dann den ganzen Weg zurück zum Eingang, um zum North Rim zu gelangen. Dieser hat weniger Aussichtspunkte, ist aber genauso interessant.

From there, we headed all the way back to the entrance to get to the North Rim. It has fewer viewpoints but is just as interesting.

Der Besuch dort war superinteressant, und wir haben auch einige Navajo-Touren am Fuß der Schlucht gesehen.

The visit there was fascinating, and we also saw some Navajo tours at the bottom of the canyon.
