road trip 04 - 05/2026: BLM Road 1065 - House Rock Valley Road, AZ (day 25)

 Für den Sonntag hatten wir die BLM Road 1065 als Ausflug, die auch House Valley Road genannt wird. Sie verbindet Arizona (Vermilion Cliffs National Monument) und Utah (Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument). Dabei handelt es sich um eine knapp 48 km lange Schotterpiste. Für diese sollte man ein Auto mit hoher Bodenfreiheit und 4x4/Allradantrieb haben, da der Untergrund teilweise sehr sandig-weich sein kann. Bei Regen oder drohendem Regen soll man diese Straße meiden, da man sich dort schnell festfährt. Das Problem dabei ist dann, dass man a) keinen Handyempfang hat und b) auch weder Abschleppservice noch Mechaniker vorbeikommen. Den Anfang der Strecke, um dorthin zu gelangen, fuhren wir nun zum dritten Mal (u.a.vorbei an der Navajo Bridge) und starteten an der Arizona-Seite. BLM steht ansonsten für "Bureau of Land Management", das ist die staatliche Behörde, die dieses Gebiet managt.

For Sunday, we planned an excursion along BLM Road 1065—also known as House Valley Road—which connects Arizona (Vermilion Cliffs National Monument) and Utah (Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument). It is a gravel track just under 48 km long. A vehicle with high ground clearance and 4WD/all-wheel drive is recommended, as the surface can be very soft and sandy in places. You should avoid this road if it is raining or if rain is forecast, as it is easy to get stuck. The problem then is that a) there is no cell phone reception, and b) neither a tow truck nor a mechanic is likely to come by. We drove the initial stretch to reach the route for the third time (passing the Navajo Bridge, among other landmarks) and started from the Arizona side. Incidentally, BLM stands for "Bureau of Land Management," the government agency that manages this area.

Shortly before turning off the highway, there is another information board with a map and some details about the route.

Nach knapp 5 Kilometern kommt ein Parkplatz, der zur "Condor viewing site" gehört. Hier findet man Informationen zu den Kondoren, die man hier sehen kann. Oben auf dem Huegl befindet sich eine Aufzuchtstation, und einmal im Jahr werden die Kondore in die Freiheit entlassen.

After 3 miles, you reach a parking area for the "Condor viewing site." Here, you can find information about the condors that can be seen in the area. A rearing station is located at the top of the hill, and the condors are released into the wild once a year.

Links und rechts gehen viele weitere kleine Schotterstrassen ab, die auch gern mit Offroad-Fahrzeugen befahren werden oder zu kostenlosen Campsites führen. Aber teilweise auch zu tollen, nicht überlaufenen Wanderwegen; manche davon benötigen jedoch eine spezielle Lizenz, um dort wandern zu dürfen, um die Natur zu schützen.

Many other small gravel roads branch off to the left and right; these are popular with off-road vehicles and often lead to free campsites. Some also lead to fantastic, uncrowded hiking trails—though a special permit is required for some of them to protect the natural environment.

An der 1065 liegt auch die Maze Rock Art Site. Vom Parkplatz ist es ein knapper Kilometer Wanderweg, bis man zu einem großen Steinhaufen mit Petroglyphen kommt.

The Maze Rock Art Site is also located along Route 1065. From the parking area, it is a 0.7-mile hike to a large pile of rocks featuring petroglyphs.

Nur ein paar Kilometer weiter findet dann der Übergang von Arizona nach Utah statt, und damit auch vom Vermilion Cliff zum Grand Staircase-Escalante NM. Hier gibt es auch einen ganz einfachen Campingplatz.

Just a short drive further on, the transition from Arizona to Utah takes place—and with it, the shift from the Vermilion Cliffs to Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. There is also a very simple campsite here.

Zwischendurch liegt noch der Wire Pass Trailhead, von dem aus der Wire Pass Slot Canyon und The Wave (Coyote Buttes North) erreichbar sind. Die "Wave" ist sehr beliebt und dafür gibt es eine spezielle Lotterie, um eine Genehmigung zum Wandern dort zu ergattern.

Along the way lies the Wire Pass Trailhead, which provides access to Wire Pass Slot Canyon and The Wave (Coyote Buttes North). "The Wave" is very popular, and there is a special lottery to secure a hiking permit.

Am Ende geht es dann wieder auf einen Highway, der uns zurück nach Page führte. Inzwischen wurde es sehr dunkel und windig. Wir entschlossen uns dann noch kurz in Page zur Waschanlage zu fahren, da das Auto inzwischen einfach sehr versandet war. Als wir am Lake Powell ankamen, war es richtig stürmisch und überall wirbelte der Sand rum. Der Camper wackelte dann schon ordentlich durch den Sturm und später gab's dazu noch Gewitter und Regen.

Eventually, we got back onto a highway that led us to Page. By then, it had become very dark and windy. We decided to make a quick stop at a car wash in Page because the vehicle was covered in sand. When we arrived at Lake Powell, it was truly stormy, with sand swirling everywhere. The camper was rocking quite a bit in the gale, and later on, thunderstorms and rain moved in as well.

Nachtrag:

Am 13.7.2026 waren wir von unserer Reise schon wieder einige Zeit zu Hause und es kam die schockierende Nachricht, dass der aktuelle Präsident eine Verfügung erlassen hat, um Grand Staircase-Escalante NM und auch das Bears Ears NM um knapp 90% zu reduzieren, um Ölbohrungen etc. zu ermöglichen. Dabei wurden gezielt Lügen verbreitet (man kann dort eh nicht wandern, alles ist abgezäunt, man dürfe in keinem der beiden NM jagen oder fischen usw.). Es ist einfach unfassbar, wie selbst die Regierung von Utah mitgemacht hat und ohne Einspruch danebengestanden ist. :-(. So sind viele Orte (wie z. B. der Grosvenor Arch), die wir auf unserer Reise besucht haben, nicht mehr geschützt vor Zerstörung. Die Karte zeigt, was von zuvor (lila) noch als geschütztes Gebiet (orange) übrig geblieben ist.

Addendum:

By July 13, 2026, we had already been home from our trip for some time when the shocking news arrived that the incumbent president had issued an executive order to reduce the size of Grand Staircase-Escalante NM and Bears Ears NM by nearly 90% in order to facilitate oil drilling and similar activities. Deliberate falsehoods were spread in the process (claims that you couldn't hike there anyway, that everything was fenced off, that hunting or fishing was prohibited in both national monuments, etc.). It is simply unfathomable how even the Utah government went along with this and stood by without raising an objection. :-(. Consequently, many places we visited on our trip (such as Grosvenor Arch) are no longer protected from destruction. The map shows what remains of the original area (purple) as protected land (orange).

road trip 04 - 05/2026: Grand Canyon National Park - North Rim, AZ (day 24)

 Es war wieder Wochenende, und so standen die entfernteren Ziele wieder auf der Liste. Diesmal schafften wir es endlich zum Grand Canyon National Park, aber zur wenig besuchten Nordseite. Diese ist für Touristen oft schwerer zu erreichen, da sie ja von Las Vegas dorthin fahren. Während der South Rim gern bis zu 4 Millionen Besucher pro Jahr verzeichnet, verzeichnet der North Rim nur um die 150.000. Wir waren schon lange gespannt, aber leider auch etwas traurig. 2025 brannte hier ein großer Waldbrand, der so einiges zerstört hat, darunter auch die wunderschöne Lodge, die man hier finden konnte. Die Nordseite ist deutlich höher gelegen als die Südseite und erlebt somit im Winter auch mehr Schneefall; somit wird der North Rim auch immer geschlossen über die Wintermonate. Diesmal war die Eröffnung am 15.05. und wir sind direkt am nächsten Tag hingefahren. Die Lodge und das Besucherzentrum sind inzwischen vollständig abgerissen, und im Park ist kein Wasser verfügbar. Somit gibt's nur Dixi-Klos an der Tankstelle und am General Store. Als wir dort waren, waren auch die Campingplätze noch geschlossen.

It was the weekend again, so more distant destinations were back on the agenda. This time, we finally made it to Grand Canyon National Park—specifically to the less-visited North Rim. It is often harder for tourists to reach, since most drive from Las Vegas. While the South Rim frequently sees up to 4 million visitors a year, the North Rim attracts only around 150,000. We had long been eager to visit, though we were also a bit saddened; a major wildfire had swept through the area in 2025, destroying much of it—including the beautiful lodge that had stood there. The North Rim sits at a significantly higher elevation than the South Rim and consequently experiences heavier snowfall in winter; as a result, it always closes during the winter months. It opened on May 15th this time, and we drove there the very next day. The lodge and visitor center have since been completely demolished, and there is no running water available in the park. This means the only facilities are portable toilets at the gas station and the general store. When we visited, the campgrounds were still closed.

Die Fahrt führte teilweise durch das Gebiet des Vermilion Cliffs NM.

Nach knapp 200 km erreichen wir den Eingang des Grand Canyon National Parks am North Rim bei knackigen 12 °C Außentemperatur, aber immerhin Sonne.

After roughly 130 miles, we reach the North Rim entrance of Grand Canyon National Park in a brisk 55F, though at least the sun is out.

Heute weist nur noch die Infotafel auf die ehemalige Lodge hin. Das war schon irgendwie traurig, und das hat man allen Besuchern angemerkt.

Today, only an information board points to the former lodge. It was somehow sad, and you could tell that all the visitors felt the same way.

Einige der schönen Blockhütten, die zum Hotelbetrieb gehörten, haben das Feuer jedoch unbeschadet überstanden. Immerhin ein kleiner Lichtblick.

However, some of the beautiful log cabins belonging to the hotel complex survived the fire unscathed. At least that is a small ray of hope.

Roaring Springs Canyon

Wir hielten am General Store für einen Magneten an. Hier kann man auch kleine Snacks sowie Basics für Camping- und Wanderbedarf kaufen.

We stopped at the general store to buy a magnet. You can also buy small snacks and basic camping and hiking supplies there.

Vom General Store ging es dann zurück zur Cape Royal Road, an der sich die verschiedenen Aussichtspunkte entlangreihen. Der erste Stop war am Point Imperial auf einer Höhe von 2683 m.

From the General Store, we headed back to Cape Royal Road, along which the various viewpoints are strung out. The first stop was at Point Imperial, at an elevation of 8,803 ft.

Auf einer Lichtung kann man die Umrisse mehrerer Steinräume mit niedrigen Mauern erkennen. Obwohl nur die Fundamente erhalten sind, vermittelt der Grundriss einen Eindruck davon, wie die Menschen einst lebten. Hierbei handelt es sich um ein kleines Pueblo, das vor etwa 900 Jahren errichtet wurde.

In a clearing, the outlines of several stone rooms with low walls are visible. Although only the foundations remain, the layout conveys an impression of how people once lived. This is a small pueblo that was founded about 900 years ago.

Am Ende erreicht man den Parkplatz am Cape Royal. Der Weg führt zu 2 schönen Aussichtspunkten. Wir starteten mit dem Aussichtspunkt "Cape Royal". 

Finally, you reach the parking area at Cape Royal. The path leads to two beautiful viewpoints. We started with the "Cape Royal" viewpoint.

Der andere Abzweig des Weges führt zum Angels Window. Dort befindet sich der Aussichtspunkt genau auf diesem Bogen/Fenster oben drauf.

The other branch of the trail leads to Angel's Window. The viewpoint there is directly above the arch—or window—itself.

Am Walhalla Overlook haben wir ein sehr sympathisches deutsches Paar auf ihren Motorrädern kennengelernt, welches über die letzten Jahre in verschiedenen Etappen die Panamericana befahren hat und über die nächsten Jahre in Etappen die USA und Kanada erkunden will. Da war es schon fast schade, sich trennen zu müssen, so viel zu erzählen. Inzwischen war es schon wieder später Nachmittag und wir mussten ja auch die 2,5 Stunden wieder zum Campingplatz zurückfahren.

At the Walhalla Overlook, we met a very nice German couple on motorcycles who had traveled the Pan-American Highway in stages over the past few years and planned to explore the USA and Canada in stages over the coming years. It was almost a shame to have to part ways, given how much there was to talk about. By then, it was already late afternoon, and we still had a two-and-a-half-hour drive back to the campsite.

Mein Fazit zu diesem Ausflug: Der North Rim ist so viel schöner als der South Rim und es ist alles deutlich entspannter aufgrund der wenigen Besucher. Keine Parkplatzsuche, nichts überfüllt und kaum laute Menschen. Ein Traum und eine eindeutige Empfehlung, falls man den Weg auf sich nehmen möchte! 

My verdict on this trip: The North Rim is so much more beautiful than the South Rim, and everything is much more relaxed thanks to the smaller number of visitors. No hunting for parking, no overcrowding, and hardly any noisy crowds. It's a dream—and definitely recommended if you're willing to make the journey!
