road trip 07-09/2026: Hells Canyon, ID & OR (day 15 & 16)

Tag 15/ day 15

Unser nächstes Ziel war der Hells Canyon. An diesem Tag war es besonders schlimm mit dem Waldbrandrauch; der Geruch war extrem stark und die Sicht war schlecht.

Our next destination was Hells Canyon. The wildfire smoke was particularly bad that day; the smell was extremely strong, and visibility was poor.

Man sieht auch, wie trocken die gesamte Landschaft ist.

You can also see how dry the entire landscape is.

Entlang der Strassen findet man oft Schilder, die über die Geschichte der Gegend informieren.

Along the roads, you often find signs that provide information about the area's history.

Der ganze Dunst gab ein gespenstisches Gefühl, zumal wir auch nur wenige Fahrzeuge entlang der Strecke gesehen haben.

The pervasive haze created a ghostly atmosphere, especially since we saw so few vehicles along the route.

Nachdem wir den Fluss überquert hatten, waren wir nun in Oregon.

After crossing the river, we were now in Oregon.

Auf dem gleichen Campingplatz standen wir auch 2020 und der ist wirklich sehr schön. "Copperfield Park" wird vom örtlichen Stromversorger betrieben, der die gesamte Schlucht unterhält.

We also stayed at this same campsite in 2020, and it is truly lovely. "Copperfield Park" is operated by the local utility company, which maintains the entire gorge.

Tag 16/ day 16

An diesem Tag folgten wir der Straße durch die Schlucht bis zum Staudamm, denn die Gegend ist sehr sehenswert.

On that day, we followed the road through the canyon to the dam, as the area is well worth seeing.

Der Rauch war inzwischen zur Normalität geworden.

By now, the smoke had become the norm.

Snake River

Am Besucherzentrum ist dann das Ende der Straße erreicht, hier starten Rafting-Touren und Bootstouren durch den Canyon.

The road ends at the visitor center; rafting trips and boat tours through the canyon start here.

Wir drehten dann um und eigentlich wollte ich am Staudamm noch ein paar Fotos machen. Leider habe ich beim aussteigen das handgroße Loch im Asphalt nicht gesehen. Ich bin fies umgeknickt, lag dann neben dem Auto, hatte starke Schmerzen und konnte nicht mehr auftreten. Andreas hievte mich auf den Sitz und wir sind dann die 25 Meilen zur nächsten Tankstelle gefahren, um einen Beutel Eiswürfel zu kaufen. GsD gehört das in den USA zum Standardangebot. 

We turned back then, and I had actually wanted to take a few photos at the dam. Unfortunately, when I got out of the car, I didn't see the hole in the asphalt—about the size of a hand. I twisted my ankle badly, ended up lying next to the car in severe pain, and couldn't put any weight on it. Andreas hoisted me into the seat, and we drove the 25 miles to the nearest gas station to buy a bag of ice cubes. Thank goodness that’s a standard item in the US.

My right ankle was already badly swollen after just a few minutes.

Wir fuhren erstmal zurück zum Camper und mussten nun überlegen, wie es weitergeht. Der nächste Arzt war 4 Stunden entfernt (genauso wie eine größere Apotheke) und es war Samstagabend. Somit habe ich am Camper den Fuß hochgelegt, gekühlt und Schmerzmittel eingenommen. Abends konnte ich immerhin leicht auftreten mit starkem Humpeln. Das war ein gutes Zeichen, somit waren zumindest die Bänder im Knöchel nicht durchgerissen und das war schon eine riesige Erleichterung.

We headed back to the camper first and then had to figure out what to do next. The nearest doctor was four hours away—as was any major pharmacy—and it was Saturday evening. So, back at the camper, I elevated my foot, applied ice, and took painkillers. By evening, I could at least put a little weight on it, albeit with a heavy limp. That was a good sign; it meant the ankle ligaments weren't torn, which was a huge relief.

road trip 07-09/2026: Lake Cascade & Wildlife Canyon Scenic Byway, ID (day 12 - 14)

 Tag 12/ day 12

Wir waren nun am Lake Cascade und unsere Campsite hatte Blick auf den See. Pirate hatte keine wirkliche Lust, rauszugehen, und schaute ganz skeptisch.

Our campsite at Lake Cascade overlooked the lake. Pirate didn't really feel like going out and looked quite skeptical.

Es war sonnig und der Waldbranddunst hing im Himmel.

It was sunny, and the haze from the forest fire hung in the sky.

Nach der Arbeit ging es am Nachmittag entlang des Wildlife Canyon Scenic Byway von Banks nach Lowman und wieder zurück mit Blick auf den Payette River.

After work, we drove along the Wildlife Canyon Scenic Byway from Banks to Lowman and back, with views of the Payette River.

Idaho ist ein Paradies für Rafting./ Idaho is a paradise for rafters.

Auf einem leeren Campingplatz entlang der Strecke machten wir am Nachmittag ein Picknick.

We had a picnic in the afternoon at an empty campsite along the route.

Abendstimmung/ evening mood

Tag 13/ day 13

Es war etwas mehr zu tun mit der Arbeit, also blieben wir den ganzen Tag auf dem Campingplatz und liessen es ruhig angehen.

There was a bit more work to do, so we stayed at the campsite all day and took it easy.

Tag 14/ day 14

Wir blieben im Lake Cascade State Park, zogen aber für die letzte Nacht auf einen anderen Campground um. 

We stayed at Lake Cascade State Park but moved to a different campground for the last night.

Wir standen wieder am See mit nettem Blick, doch der Tag war wieder voller Arbeit.

Our campsite was by the lake again, with a nice view, but the day was once more full of work.

Die Strandliegen konnte man mieten.

You could rent the beach loungers.

Zum Abendessen entschieden wir uns für den hawaiianischen Food Truck.

For dinner, we decided on the Hawaiian food truck.

Und dann ging es am Seeufer entlang spazieren.

And then we went for a walk along the lakeshore.
