road trip 04 - 05/2026: Dead Horse Point State Park & La Sal Mountains Loop, UT (day 33 & 34)

 Am Memorial Day fand unser Umzug zum letzten Ziel dieser Reise statt, wir fuhren vom Bryce Valley nach Moab, ca. 430 km. Dabei fuhren wir den größten Teil der Strecke auf der Interstate I-70, weil es der einfachste Weg mit dem großen Anhänger war. 

On Memorial Day, we made the move to the final destination of this trip, driving from Bryce Valley to Moab—a distance of approximately 270 miles. We covered most of the route on Interstate I-70, as it was the easiest path to take with the large trailer.

Bevor wir zur I-70 kamen, fuhren wir noch durch einige kleine Ortschaften.

Before we reached I-70, we drove through a few small towns.

Dass man sich Moab nähert, sieht man an den unverkennbaren roten Felsenformationen. Entlang der Interstate findet man diverse Aussichtspunkte, die wir jedoch mit dem Anhänger ausgelassen haben.

You know you are approaching Moab by the unmistakable red rock formations. There are various viewpoints along the interstate, though we skipped them because we were towing a trailer.

Wir hatten einen Stellplatz im Dead Horse Point State Park gebucht. Hier waren wir bereits 2020 und mögen den Park sehr. Viele der großen Stellplätze sind behindertenfreundlich angelegt, mit einem asphaltierten Pad, das auch dazu beiträgt, dass nicht ganz so viel Sand in den Camper hineingetragen wird. Alle Stellplätze haben einen Feuerring und eine überdachte Picknickbank. Einen Wasseranschluss gibt es hier aufgrund der Lage nicht; somit muss man sich sein Wasser für Toilette, Dusche etc. selbst mitbringen. In Moab gibt es einige Möglichkeiten, Wasser aufzufüllen.

Der Abend war dann auch recht grau, und später regnete es noch ganz ordentlich – ungewöhnlich für die Jahreszeit.

We had booked a campsite at Dead Horse Point State Park. We had visited before in 2020 and really liked the park. Many of the spacious sites are designed to be accessible, featuring a paved pad that also helps keep some of the sand out of the camper. Due to the location, there is no water hookup; you must bring your own water for the toilet, shower, and other uses. There are several places in Moab where you can refill your water supply.

The evening turned out to be quite gray, and later on, it rained quite heavily—unusual for this time of year.

Tag 34/ day 34

Nach Feierabend fuhren wir zuerst zum berühmten Aussichtspunkt. Der Dead Horse Point State Park zählt zu den spektakulärsten State Parks in Utah. Der Ausblick vom Dead Horse Point liegt rund 600 Meter über dem Colorado River, und man hat von hier aus einen atemberaubenden Blick auf die markanten Felsnadeln und Tafelberge der Canyonlands-Region. Hier gibt es viele schöne, hundefreundliche Wanderwege, und der Park ist auch bei Mountainbikern beliebt.

Der Legende nach diente der Dead Horse Point Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts als Pferch für wilde Mustangs, die auf dem Hochplateau (Mesa) umherstreiften. Cowboys trieben die Tiere über eine schmale Landbrücke auf die Landzunge und sperrten den Zugang mit Ästen und Gestrüpp ab. Einmal wurden die Pferde aus unbekannten Gründen in diesem wasserlosen Pferch zurückgelassen; sie verendeten dort qualvoll an Durst – in Sichtweite des 600 Meter tiefer fließenden Colorado River.

After work, we first drove to the famous viewpoint. Dead Horse Point State Park is one of the most spectacular state parks in Utah. The overlook at Dead Horse Point sits about 2000 ft above the Colorado River, offering a breathtaking view of the distinctive rock spires and mesas of the Canyonlands region. There are many beautiful, dog-friendly hiking trails here, and the park is also popular with mountain bikers.

According to legend, Dead Horse Point served in the late 19th century as a corral for wild mustangs roaming the high plateau (mesa). Cowboys would drive the animals across a narrow land bridge onto the promontory and block the access point with branches and brush. On one occasion, the horses were left behind in this waterless enclosure for unknown reasons; they perished there, suffering a painful death from thirst—within sight of the Colorado River flowing 2000 ft below.

Die Stelle hier wird auch gern für Filmproduktionen genutzt. Am wohlbekanntesten ist der Film "Thelma & Louise", dessen Abschlussszene, in der die beiden über die Klippe fahren, hier gedreht wurde.

This location is also frequently used for film productions. It is perhaps best known for the film *Thelma & Louise*; the final scene, in which the two drive over the cliff, was filmed here.

In der Umgebung wird Pottasche gewonnen, die Verdunstungsbecken kann man von hier oben auch sehen.

Potash is produced in the surrounding area; the evaporation ponds are also visible from up here.

Da das Wetter eher bewölkt war, entschieden wir uns für den La Sal Mountains Loop bei Moab, da ich die Nationalparks schon lieber bei voller Sonne anschauen wollte. Wir mussten wieder tanken und direkt an der Tankstelle stand auch dieses interessante Holzgebäude.

Since the weather was rather cloudy, we decided on the La Sal Mountains Loop near Moab, as I preferred to visit the national parks in full sunshine. We had to refuel again, and an interesting wooden building stood right next to the gas station.

Wer schon mal das Wort "double towing" gehört hat, hier ist die Erklärung: 

In einigen Bundesstaaten, etwa in Utah, kann man 2 Anhänger ziehen. Oft sind das der große Fifth-Wheel-Wohnwagen und dahinter entweder ein Auto, ein Boot oder, wie hier, noch ein Anhänger, in dem ein Side-by-Side (Geländefahrzeug) steht. 

For anyone who has ever heard the term "double towing," here is the explanation:

In some states, such as Utah, you are allowed to tow two trailers. Often, this involves a large fifth-wheel RV followed by either a car, a boat, or—as seen here—another trailer carrying a side-by-side (off-road vehicle).

Wir starteten vom Hwy 128/ Castle Valley.

Es gibt immer wieder Ausbuchtungen an der Straße, die für 1-2 Autos ausreichend sind, wenn man wegen der Aussicht anhalten möchte.

There are occasional pull-offs along the road—large enough for one or two cars—where you can stop to enjoy the view.

Wir haben knapp 3 h gebraucht, weil wir immer wieder angehalten haben. Die Strecke war auch entspannt leer, wir haben keine 10 Autos gesehen in der Zeit. Zurück in Moab haben wir noch am "Spirituosengeschaft" angehalten. In Utah kann man Alkohol nur in staatlichen Liquor Stores kaufen. Andreas schaut im Urlaub immer nach Bier aus kleinen lokalen Brauereien.

It took us just under three hours because we kept stopping along the way. The road was pleasantly empty, too; we saw fewer than ten cars during the drive. Back in Moab, we stopped at the liquor store. In Utah, you can only buy alcohol at state-run liquor stores. When on vacation, Andreas always looks for beer from small, local breweries.

road trip 04 - 05/2026: Capitol Reef National Park, UT (day 32)

Am Sonntag des Memorial-Day-Wochenendes fuhren wir in den Capitol Reef NP, da es unser letzter Tag in dieser Gegend war. Wir waren recht früh da, aber selbst dann war es schon extrem voll (wie überall an diesem Wochenende). Der Weg führte uns diesmal bis zum Ende des Scenic Byway 12, und die Strecke ist schon ein echtes Highlight.

On the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend, we drove to Capitol Reef National Park, as it was our last day in the area. We arrived quite early, but even then, it was already extremely crowded (as was everywhere else that weekend). This time, the route took us to the end of Scenic Byway 12, and the drive itself is a real highlight.

Bei Torrey ist dann die US 12 zu Ende, und man biegt nach rechts in die rote Felsenlandschaft ab.

Vom Schild aus ist es noch eine kurze Fahrt bis zum Besucherzentrum. Auch hier war es dann schon brechend voll.

From the sign, it is just a short drive to the visitor center. It was already packed there, too.

Da wir Pirate dabei hatten, fielen Wanderungen natürlich aus … aber das wären sie auch aufgrund der Parksituation. Wir sind somit nur der Scenic Road gefolgt, mit ihren verschiedenen Aussichtspunkten (die allerdings meist nur Platz für 2-3 Autos zum Anhalten bieten) und den beiden abzweigenden Schotterstrassen.

An einen Halt beim Gifford House, dem Obstgarten oder der Schule war nicht zu denken; die Parkplätze waren sowohl beim Reinfahren als auch beim Rausfahren voll inkl. Reisebusse. GsD hatten wir das vor 10 Jahren schon alles einmal mit Dominik gesehen, da waren die Menschenmassen nicht so extrem.

Since we had Pirate with us, hiking was naturally out of the question—though the parking situation would have ruled it out anyway. So, we simply followed the scenic road, taking in its various viewpoints (which, admittedly, mostly offer space for only two or three cars to pull over) and the two gravel roads branching off from it.

Stopping at Gifford House, the orchard, or the school was out of the question; the parking lots were packed—tour buses included—both on the way in and the way out. Thank goodness we had already seen all of that with Dominik ten years ago, back when the crowds weren't quite so extreme.

Haltepunkt 2

Wir folgten der unbefestigten Straße in den Grand Wash.

We followed the unpaved road into Grand Wash.

Die Felsen sind wieder einmal imposant.

The rocks are impressive once again.

Dort oben im Felsen sieht man den Cassidy Arch. Der Bogen ist nach Butch Cassidy benannt, dem Gesetzlosen, der dieses abgelegene Canyon-Gebiet in den 1890er Jahren, Berichten zufolge, als Zufluchtsort nutzte.

Up there in the rock, you can see Cassidy Arch. The arch is named after Butch Cassidy, the outlaw who reportedly used this remote canyon area as a hideout in the 1890s.

An verschiedenen Stellen ziehen sich dunkle Streifen die roten Canyonwände hinab. Diese werden als Wüstenlack bezeichnet. Schwarze Streifen sind reich an Mangan, während rötlich-braune Bereiche durch Eisen gefärbt sind.

Dark streaks run down the red canyon walls in various places. These are known as desert varnish. Black streaks are rich in manganese, while reddish-brown areas are colored by iron.

Am Grand Wash war am Parkplatz des Wanderwegs nichts frei, und viele parkten wirklich wie die Asis, auch gern mal mit zu großen RVs, die hier gar nicht reinfahren hätten dürfen (Längenbegrenzung ist bei 27 ft). Wir drehten dort um und fuhren dann die Straße zurück.

At Grand Wash, there were no spots left in the trailhead parking lot, and many people were parking like total jerks—often in oversized RVs that shouldn't have even been there in the first place (there is a 27-foot length limit). We turned around there and headed back along the road.

Und wir kamen nun an der anderen unbefestigten Straße an: die zum Capitol Gorge.

And then we arrived at the other unpaved road: the one leading to Capitol Gorge.

Diese Umgebung ist absolut toll und beeindruckend.

This setting is absolutely fantastic and impressive.

Auch am Parkplatz am Ende des Capitol Gorge war die Hölle los und man konnte kaum wenden, da viele auch ohne Rücksicht im Parkverbot parkten. Genervt haben auch die vielen Fahrer, die mit völlig unangepasster Geschwindigkeit mit ihren Mietwagen (die hier bestimmt 80% der Autos ausmachten) um die Ecke schossen, besonders an schmalen Stellen. 

Ich weiß, dass meine Fotos autofrei wirken, aber nur, weil ich viele Fotos gemacht habe und die ohne Autos rausgesucht habe. Ich will ja Erinnerungen an die Felsen, nicht an die vielen Autos.

The parking lot at the end of Capitol Gorge was absolutely chaotic, too; it was hard to even turn around because so many people were inconsiderately parking in no-parking zones. It was also annoying to see so many drivers—mostly in rental cars, which surely made up 80% of the vehicles there—speeding recklessly around corners, especially in narrow sections.

I know my photos look like there aren't any cars around, but that's only because I took so many shots and specifically selected the ones without vehicles. After all, I want memories of the rock formations, not the crowds of cars.

So schön dieser Park ist, nochmal brauche ich das in den nächsten Jahren nicht. Wir haben uns auch extra den Zion-Nationalpark erspart, da es dort noch voller ist und mit dem Shuttle-System nicht wirklich planbar ist, wie lange man auf einen Bus warten muss, um damit weiterfahren zu können. Den hatten wir vor Jahren auch schon besucht, und ich verfolge natürlich die entsprechenden Facebook-Seiten zu den Nationalparks und deren Status sowie Besucherberichten.

As beautiful as this park is, I don't need to experience it again anytime soon. We deliberately skipped Zion National Park, too, since it's even more crowded, and the shuttle system makes it impossible to plan how long you'll have to wait for a bus to continue your journey. We had visited it years ago anyway, and I naturally keep up with the relevant Facebook pages for the national parks to track their status and read visitor reports.

In Torrey kamen wir dann wieder auf die US 12.

Zurück in Tropic tankten wir voll, da am nächsten Tag der Umzug an den nächsten Standort bevorstand. Dabei entschlossen wir uns kurzerhand, in der örtlichen Pizzeria zu essen und waren wirklich positiv überrascht, wie gut sie war. Können wir somit nur weiterempfehlen.

Back in Tropic, we filled up the tank, as we were due to move to the next location the following day. We decided on the spur of the moment to eat at the local pizzeria and were genuinely pleasantly surprised by how good it was. We can certainly recommend it.
