road trip 04 - 05/2026: Upper Antelope Canyon/ Page, AZ (day 22)

 Nun ging es in den Upper Antelope Canyon mit einer anderen Tour Company. Alleine kann man keine dieser Sehenswürdigkeiten besuchen; alles ist nur mit geführten Touren möglich.

Hier nun die Besonderheiten des Upper Antelope Canyons: Dieser hat eine „A-Form“ (unten breit, oben schmal) und ist dunkler, stimmungsvoller; und man sieht die berühmten Lichtstrahlen. Das Gelände ist flach, sandig und eben; daher ist kein Klettern erforderlich. Dies macht es  ideal für Familien, Kinder und Personen mit eingeschränkter Mobilität. Die Touren hier sind sehr beliebt und oft überfüllt. Um vom Sammelpunkt zum Eingang des Canyons zu kommen, hat man eine holprige, rund 10-minütige Fahrt im Geländewagen (4x4) vor sich. Die Touren hierfür sind bereits sehr früh ausgebucht. Ein weiterer Nachteil ist der Preis: Dieser liegt deutlich höher. Was wir etwas bescheiden fanden, war, dass man das Ticket vorher online bezahlt, aber am Sammelpunkt dann nochmal $15 pro Person bezahlen muss als Gebühr, da man Navajo-Land betreten hat. Das hätte man etwas eleganter in der Tourgebühr schon einkalkulieren können, denn am Lower Antelope Canyon war das nicht so umständlich. Und was ich etwas unverschämt fand: Selbst Babys und Kleinkinder zahlen den vollen Preis.

Auch hier waren es bei unserer Tour Company zu unserem Timeslot gegen Mittag 7 Gruppen mit jeweils um die 10 Personen.

Next, we headed to Upper Antelope Canyon with a different tour company. You cannot visit any of these sights on your own; access is restricted to guided tours only.

Here are the distinctive features of Upper Antelope Canyon: it has an "A-shape" (wide at the bottom, narrow at the top) and is darker and more atmospheric; it is also where you can see the famous light beams. The terrain is flat, sandy, and level, so no climbing is required. This makes it ideal for families, children, and people with limited mobility. Tours here are very popular and often crowded. To get from the meeting point to the canyon entrance, there is a bumpy, roughly 10-minute ride in a 4x4 vehicle. Tours here sell out very early. Another downside is the significantly higher price

. We found it a bit annoying that you pay for the ticket online in advance, but then have to pay an additional $15 per person at the meeting point as a fee for entering Navajo land. This could have been handled more elegantly by simply including it in the tour price, as the process was far less cumbersome at Lower Antelope Canyon. And what I found rather outrageous was that even babies and toddlers pay the full price.

For our specific midday time slot, our tour company had seven groups of about 10 people each.

You get shaken up quite a bit during the ride, so make sure to hold on tight—and secure your phones, water bottles, and other items, too.

Am Eingang tummeln sich die Fahrzeuge diverser Touranbieter, und somit ist auch keine Illusion, dass man hier etwas Zeit hat. Alles ist genau durchgetaktet und man wird quasi durchgeschoben. Unser Guide Nate war aber super, hat viel erklärt und auch wieder Fotos gemacht.

Vehicles from various tour operators crowd the entrance, leaving no doubt that time is of the essence here. Everything runs on a tight schedule, and you are essentially ushered through. However, our guide Nate was fantastic; he explained a lot and took photos for us as well.

Am Ausgang muss man eine kleine Sanddüne hochklettern, um zum überdachten Weg zurück zu den Fahrzeugen zu gelangen.

At the exit, you have to climb up a small sand dune to reach the covered path back to the vehicles.

Es war auch hier sehr beeindruckend, ja fast magisch. Leider bleibt einem kaum Zeit, die Eindrücke im Canyon wirklich aufzunehmen, aber ein Besuch ist beide Canyon-Abschnitte definitiv wert.

It was very impressive here too—almost magical, in fact. Unfortunately, there is hardly any time to truly soak up the canyon's impressions, but both areas are definitely worth a visit.

 Auf die Touren des Antelope Canyons haben wir uns schon sehr gefreut. Am 21. Am Tag der Reise hatten wir eine Tour durch den Lower Antelope Canyon für die Mittagszeit gebucht. Alles war super organisiert. Die Wartenden wurden in Gruppen mit verschiedenen Führern aufgeteilt; unsere Gruppe umfasste 8 Personen. Es gibt eine kurze Sicherheitsbelehrung, in der erneut auf die steilen Treppen hingewiesen wird, die man mehrmals hinauf- und hinabsteigen muss. Außerdem darf man keine Taschen dabeihaben und dann ging es auch schon los. Alle Touren werden von Navajo-Guides geführt, da sich alles auf Navajo-Land befindet.

Lower und Upper Antelope Canyon haben ein paar Unterschiede. In diesem Beitrag geht es um den Lower Antelope Canyon, deshalb eine kurze Zusammenfassung:

Der Canyon hat eine "V-Form" (unten schmal, oben breit) und ist auch deshalb heller; ein breiteres Spektrum an leuchtenden Orangetönen kommt zur Geltung. Der Weg ist teilweise recht schmal, verwinkelt und uneben und erfordert das Bewältigen mehrerer Treppen und steiler Metallleiter. Aufgrund dessen wird eine durchschnittliche körperliche Fitness vorausgesetzt; es wird nicht empfohlen für Personen mit eingeschränkter Mobilität oder Klaustrophobie. Vorteil ist, dass man vom Parkplatz aus hinlaufen kann und die Touren meist nicht ganz so überlaufen sind. Sie sind auch günstiger als der Upper Antelope Canyon, aber eine Vorabreservierung wird empfohlen. Die Tour dauert im Durchschnitt rund 60 Minuten.

We were really looking forward to the Antelope Canyon tours. On day 21 of our trip, we had booked a tour of Lower Antelope Canyon around midday. Everything was excellently organized. Those waiting were divided into groups with different guides; our group consisted of eight people. There was a brief safety briefing that highlighted the steep staircases—which have to be climbed up and down several times—and noted that bags are not permitted; then, we set off. All tours are led by Navajo guides, as the site is located on Navajo land.

There are a few differences between Lower and Upper Antelope Canyon. Since this post focuses on Lower Antelope Canyon, here is a brief summary:

The canyon has a "V-shape" (narrow at the bottom, wide at the top), which makes it brighter and allows a wider spectrum of vibrant orange hues to stand out. The path is sometimes quite narrow, winding, and uneven, requiring visitors to navigate several sets of stairs and steep metal ladders. Consequently, a moderate level of physical fitness is required; the tour is not recommended for individuals with limited mobility or claustrophobia. An advantage is that you can walk there from the parking lot, and the tours are generally less crowded. They are also less expensive than tours of Upper Antelope Canyon, though advance reservations are recommended. The tour lasts approximately 60 minutes.

Wir hatten als Anbieter "Ken's Tours" / we had "Ken's Tours" as the tour company.

Touren werden quasi im Minutentakt in den Canyon geführt. Jeder Time-Slot hat verschiedene Tourgruppen, und so ist er eigentlich immer voll.

Tours are led into the canyon practically every minute. Each time slot accommodates multiple tour groups, so it is essentially always full.

An bestimmten Stellen macht der Tourguide Fotos der Teilnehmer und gibt dazu Anweisungen. Unterwegs gibt es auch ganz viele Erklärungen zur Entstehung, zur Form usw.

At certain points, the tour guide takes photos of the participants and gives them instructions. Along the way, there are also plenty of explanations about the formation, shape, and more.

Die Najao-Frau, die die Gruppe vor uns geführt hat, hat unterwegs ein traditionelles Lied auf ihrer Flöte gespielt. Das war total schön.

The Navajo lady who led our group played a traditional song on her flute along the way. It was absolutely beautiful.

Am Ende kommt man aus einem winzigen Riss in der Oberfläche wieder hinaus aus der Schlucht.

In the end, you emerge from the gorge through a tiny crack in the surface.

Gleich am Ausgang zeigte uns der Guide auch noch die Abdrücke von Dinosauriern.

Right at the exit, the guide also showed us dinosaur footprints.

Es war ein wirklich beeindruckendes Erlebnis, und oft weiß man gar nicht, wo man wegen der tollen beleuchteten Felsformationen zuerst hinschauen soll. Viele hatten tatsächlich auch nur ihre Telefone zum Fotografieren dabei, und die Guides geben gern Hilfestellungen zur richtigen Einstellung. Einige hatten größere Kameras dabei, aber die hatten oft Probleme. Hier muss man genau wissen, was wie eingestellt werden muss, und die Settings auch blitzschnell umschalten können. Man läuft nämlich fast nur und es ist nicht wirklich Zeit zum Stehenbleiben und Ausprobieren. Vor einem ist die vorherige Gruppe, hinter einem schon die nächste. Lange "Posen" für irgendwelche Fotos sind für alle anderen unheimlich störend. 

Als wir rauskamen, hatte sich ein Gewitter gebildet, und es herrschte bis in den Abend hinein ein wirklich schlimmer Sturm. Man muss also immer mal drauf gefasst sein, dass bei Regen oder Sturm, Touren auch spontan abgesagt werden muessen aus Sicherheitsgruenden.

It was a truly impressive experience; the stunning, illuminated rock formations were so spectacular that you often didn't know where to look first. Many people had only their phones for taking pictures, and the guides were happy to offer advice on the right settings. Some visitors brought larger cameras but often struggled with them; you really need to know exactly how to configure everything and switch settings in a flash. You are constantly on the move, so there isn't really time to stop and experiment. You have the group ahead of you and the next group right behind you; lingering to strike poses for photos is incredibly disruptive to everyone else.

By the time we emerged, a thunderstorm had developed, and a severe storm raged well into the evening. You always have to be prepared for the possibility that tours might be canceled at short notice due to rain or storms for safety reasons.

Wir fuhren dann zurück zum Camper, wo Pirate auf uns wartete, und am Nachmittag wurde noch etwas gearbeitet.

We then drove back to the camper, where Pirate was waiting for us, and did some work later in the afternoon.
