road trip 07-09/2026: Seen und Yellowstone Ranch/ lakes and Yellowstone Ranch , MT (day 29 - 31)

Nach der Arbeit fuhren wir eine Tour, um uns einige der Seen in der Umgebung anzusehen. Temperaturmäßig waren wir wieder bei 38 °C an diesem Tag.

After work, we went on a tour to see some of the nearby lakes. The temperature was back up to 98°F that day.

Die Gegend ist voll von Kirschfarmen, deren Kirschen man dann auch einfach am Straßenrand an kleinen Ständen kaufen kann.

The area is full of cherry farms, and you can simply buy their cherries at small roadside stands.

Zwischendurch ein Huckleberry Shake. Huckleberries ähneln Blaubeeren, sind aber nicht so süß. Sie können nicht kommerziell angebaut werden, sondern sind i. d. R. nur wild in den Bergen zu finden und daher nur von Hand zu ernten, was sie recht teuer macht.

A huckleberry shake in between. Huckleberries resemble blueberries but aren't as sweet. They cannot be cultivated commercially; instead, they are generally found only in the wild in the mountains and must be harvested by hand, which makes them quite expensive.

Im kleinen Oertchen St. Ignatius wollten wir uns eigentlich eine Kirche anschauen, haben dann aber aufgrund der Umgebung dankend verzichtet aus dem Auto auszusteigen.

We had actually intended to visit a church in the small village of St. Ignatius, but—given the surroundings—we decided against getting out of the car.

 Tag 31/ day 31

Tag 30 verbrachten wir komplett auf dem Campingplatz mit arbeiten, entspannen und Hunderunden. Am Tag 31 brachen wir dann auf zum naechsten Ziel auf unserer Route.

We spent Day 30 entirely at the campsite working, relaxing, and walking the dogs. On Day 31, we set off for the next destination on our route.

Darby ist dadurch bekannt geworden, dass sich hier die Chief Joseph Ranch befindet welche die Filmkulisse der Serie "Yellowstone" als dortige Dutton Ranch darstellt. Leider sieht man nicht viel obwohl sie tatsaechlich dicht an der Hauptstrasse liegt. Somit war dieser Umweg eher enttaeuschend, da ich die Serie wirklich geliebt habe. Wer das noetige Kleingeld hat, kann hier auch uebernachten. 

Darby is known for being the location of the Chief Joseph Ranch, which serves as the setting for the Dutton Ranch in the series "Yellowstone." Unfortunately, you cannot see much of it, even though it is actually situated right next to the main road. Consequently, this detour was rather disappointing, given how much I truly loved the series. Anyone with the necessary funds can also stay overnight here.

Weiter ging es zum Campingplatz fuer die Nacht, der sich im Painted Rocks State Park befand. Sehr schoen abgelegen und sehr ruhig. Leider war das Reservoir, dass eigentlich direkt hinter den Campsites ist, auch gut leer. 

Next, we headed to the campsite for the night, located in Painted Rocks State Park. It was beautifully secluded and very quiet. Unfortunately, the reservoir—which is actually situated right behind the campsites—was also quite low.

road trip 07-09/2026: Whitefish & Kalispell, MT (day 27 & 28)

Wir blieben auf unserem Campingplatz, und der normale Alltag mit Homeoffice und Hundespaziergängen ging weiter.

We stayed at our campsite, and our normal daily routine— "working from home" and walking the dog—continued.

Tag 28/ day 28

Am frühen Nachmittag fuhren wir ins nahegelegene Whitefish und bummelten durch die Stadt. Whitefish ist bei Touristen sehr beliebt, dank des Whitefish Mountain Resorts am Big Mountain. Im Winter bietet es über 3.000 Acres (ca. 1.200 Hektar) an befahrbarem Skigelände und verwandelt sich im Sommer in ein Zentrum für Mountainbiking, Ziplining und Wandern. Außerdem liegt der beliebte Glacier National Park nicht weit entfernt.

In the early afternoon, we drove to nearby Whitefish and strolled through the town. Whitefish is very popular with tourists, thanks to the Whitefish Mountain Resort on Big Mountain. In winter, it offers over 3,000 acres (approx. 1,200 hectares) of skiable terrain, while in summer it transforms into a hub for mountain biking, ziplining, and hiking. Additionally, the popular Glacier National Park is located nearby.

Als wir am City Park ankamen, fanden wir eine Überraschung: Ein Spender hatte dort Tennisbälle hinterlassen, damit Hunde dort spielen konnten.

When we arrived at City Park, we found a surprise: a donor had left tennis balls there for dogs to play with.

Das Oertchen hatte eine wirklich schoene Atmosphaere, und der Besuch hat sich gelohnt.

The small town had a really lovely atmosphere, and the visit was well worth it.

Der Rückweg führte uns noch durch Kalispell. Aufgrund der Nähe zum Glacier-Nationalpark und zum Flathead Lake ist auch diese Stadt touristisch gut angebunden und zugleich eine preiswertere Alternative zur Unterkunft im nahegelegenen Whitefish. Der Name stammt von einem Wort der Salish, das „flaches Land oberhalb des Sees“ bedeutet.

Our return journey took us through Kalispell. Thanks to its proximity to Glacier National Park and Flathead Lake, the town is well-connected for tourism while offering a more affordable alternative to accommodation in nearby Whitefish. Its name comes from a Salish word meaning "flat land above the lake."
