road trip 04 - 05/2026: Moab & La Sal Mountains Loop, UT (day 33 & 34)

Tag 33/ day 33

Memorial Day war unser Umzugstag an den letzten Standort dieser Reise. Es ging vom Bryce-Canyon-Gebiet ins Moab-Gebiet. Es gibt verschiedene Routen, aber mit dem großen Wohnwagen haben wir uns für die I-70 entschieden, da sie am einfachsten zu fahren ist. Die Strecke betrug rund 430 km.

Memorial Day was the day we moved to the final stop of this trip, traveling from the Bryce Canyon area to the Moab area. There are various routes, but with our large travel trailer, we opted for I-70 as it is the easiest to drive. The journey covered approximately 270 miles.

We drove through a few small towns before getting onto I-70.

Wir hatten einen Stellplatz im Dead Horse Point State Park. Hier waren wir schon einmal 2020 und es ist ein wirklich nettes Fleckchen. Viele der Campsites sind behindertenfreundlich (asphaltiert), und jeder Stellplatz hat einen Feuerring sowie einen überdachten Sitzplatz mit Picknickbank. Pirate bekam seinen Zaun rund um die Überdachung und mit Teppich lag er meistens unter dem Tisch, um alles zu beobachten oder zu entspannen. Die größeren Stellplätze haben alle einen Stromanschluss, aber Wasser muss man selbst mitbringen. Das war für uns dann etwas doof, da wir dafür erst in den Ort Moab fahren mussten und es dort nur eine Tankstelle gibt (Maverick) zum Auffüllen. Dementsprechend lang ist die Warteschlange oft.

We had a campsite at Dead Horse Point State Park. We had been there before in 2020, and it is a really nice spot. Many of the campsites are accessible (paved), and each site features a fire ring and a covered seating area with a picnic table. Pirate had his enclosure set up around the covered area, with a rug laid out; he mostly spent his time under the table, either watching his surroundings or relaxing. The larger sites all have electrical hookups, but you have to bring your own water. That was a bit of a hassle for us, as it meant driving into the town of Moab, where there is only one gas station (Maverick) for refilling. Consequently, the line there is often quite long.

Tag 34/ day 34

Auch an diesem Tag war es eher bewölkt, und so entschieden wir uns, nach Feierabend den La Sal Mountains Loop zu fahren. Die Nationalparks wollte ich schon gern mit Sonne sehen.

It was rather cloudy that day too, so we decided to drive the La Sal Mountains Loop after work. I really wanted to see the national parks in the sunshine.

Der Dead Horse Point State Park zählt zu den spektakulärsten State Parks in Utah. Der Ausblick vom Dead Horse Point gehört befindet sich rund 600 Meterüber dem Colorado River erhebt und man hat von hier einen atemberaubenden Blick auf die markanten Felsnadeln und Tafelberge der Canyonlands-Region. Hier gibt es viele schöne (hundefreundliche) Wanderwege, und der Park ist auch bei Mountainbikern beliebt.

Der Legende nach diente der Dead Horse Point Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts als Pferch für wilde Mustangs, die auf dem Hochplateau (Mesa) umherstreiften. Cowboys trieben die Tiere über eine schmale Landbrücke auf die Landzunge und sperrten den Zugang mit Ästen und Gestrüpp ab. Einmal wurden die Pferde aus unbekannten Gründen in diesem wasserlosen Pferch zurückgelassen; sie verendeten dort qualvoll an Durst – in Sichtweite des 600 Meter tiefer fließenden Colorado River.

Dead Horse Point State Park is one of Utah's most spectacular state parks. Situated roughly 600 meters above the Colorado River, Dead Horse Point offers breathtaking views of the distinctive rock spires and mesas of the Canyonlands region. The park features many beautiful—and dog-friendly—hiking trails and is also a popular destination for mountain bikers.

According to legend, Dead Horse Point served in the late 19th century as a corral for wild mustangs roaming the mesa. Cowboys would drive the animals across a narrow land bridge onto the promontory and block the entrance with branches and brush. On one occasion, the horses were abandoned in this waterless enclosure for unknown reasons; they suffered a painful death from thirst—within sight of the Colorado River flowing 2000 ft below.

Wir fuhren als Erstes zu genau diesem Aussichtspunkt.

We drove to that exact viewpoint first.

Hier wurden auch diverse Filme gedreht, wie die berühmte letzte Szene von "Thelma & Louise", wo sie beide über das Kliff fahren, oder "Mission Impossible II" und "Westwind".

Various films were also shot here, such as the famous final scene of *Thelma & Louise*—where the two drive off the cliff—as well as *Mission: Impossible II* and *Westwind*.

In der Umgebung wird Pottasche gewonnen, die Verdunstungsbecken kann man von hier oben auch sehen.

Potash is produced in the surrounding area; the evaporation ponds are also visible from up here.

   

road trip 04 - 05/2026: Lake Powell, AZ (day 20)

 Wir hatten für den Nachmittag eine Fahrt mit einem Ausflugsboot auf dem Lake Powell gebucht. Dies geht bequem online über den Anbieter, der auch Campingplatz, Hotel, Marina usw. anbietet. anbietet. führt.

Wir sollten ca. 30 Minuten vorher in der Hotel-Lobby sein, was sich gut mit einem Bummel durch den dort ebenfalls gelegenen Souvenirshop verbinden lässt. Die Tour dauert dann um die 3 Stunden, und wir hatten irgendwie den heißesten Tag erwischt, mit 39 °C/103 °F. Aber auf dem Wasser gab es während der Fahrt ausreichend Wind, und man musste sich nur gut vorher eincremen.

Einige Touren (ich hätte eigentlich gern die Fahrt zur Rainbow Bridge gemacht) sind aufgrund des niedrigen Wasserstands (derzeit liegt der Wasserstand bei 23%) zumindest dieses Jahr nicht möglich; dazu gehören die Rainbow Bridge und auch der Antelope Canyon.

We had booked an afternoon excursion boat tour on Lake Powell. This can be easily arranged online through the operator that also manages the campground, hotel, marina, and so on.

We were asked to be in the hotel lobby about 30 minutes beforehand—a perfect opportunity to browse the souvenir shop located right there. The tour lasts around three hours; as it happened, we picked the hottest day for it, with temperatures hitting 39°C (103°F). However, there was plenty of breeze out on the water during the trip, so we just needed to make sure we applied plenty of sunscreen beforehand.

Some tours—I would have really liked to take the trip to Rainbow Bridge—are not running this year due to low water levels (right now at 23%); this applies to both Rainbow Bridge and Antelope Canyon.

Von der Lobby aus wurden wir in Gruppen mit Golfcarts zur Marina gefahren, die teilweise recht steil ist. Andreas und ich gehörten zu der Handvoll hartgesottener Gäste, die sich oben aufs offene Deck gesetzt hatten. Der Grossteil der Gruppe saß im klimatisierten unteren Deck (wo man auch leichter Getränke bekommen konnte).

From the lobby, we were driven in groups by golf cart to the marina—a route that is quite steep in places. Andreas and I were among the handful of hardy guests who had chosen to sit on the open upper deck. The majority of the group sat on the air-conditioned lower deck (where it was also easier to get drinks).

Das Asphaltierte ist übrigens eine der ursprünglichen Rampen, die aufgrund des Wasserstands derzeit nicht mehr genutzt werden.

The paved section is one of the original ramps, which are no longer in use due to the water level.

Wahweap Marina

Unser erster "Stop" war am Glen-Canyon-Damm, zu dem es dann auch einige Erläuterungen gab.

Our first stop was at the Glen Canyon Dam, where we also received some information.

Anschließend führte uns die Fahrt weiter durch die Windungen des Lake Powell. Dort, wo die weiße Kante beim Übergang zum Rot liegt, liegt die eigentliche Wasserhöhe bei voller Menge.

The journey then continued through the winding stretches of Lake Powell. The actual water level at full capacity corresponds to the point where the white band meets the red rock.

Hier ist die Abfahrt in den Antelope Canyon, aber derzeit ist sie nur noch mit Kajak, Sea-Doo oder SUP möglich.

Auch hier sieht man, wie viel Höhenunterschied zur ursprünglichen asphaltierten Rampe fehlt.

Nun waren wir am Endpunkt angekommen und drehten um, um die Rückfahrt zu beginnen.

Von dort ging es zurück zum klimatisierten Camper, wo Pirate natürlich keine Lust hatte, ihn zu verlassen. Wir saßen dann noch eine Weile draußen. So sah die Campsite übrigens aus, mit Hundegitter, unserem Wäscheständer, Campingstühlen sowie dem fest installierten Picknicktisch samt Grill und Feuerring.

From there, we headed back to the air-conditioned camper, where Pirate - naturally - had no desire to leave. We then sat outside for a while. By the way, this is what the campsite looked like: the dog gate, our drying rack, camping chairs, and the fixed picnic table complete with a grill and fire ring.
