road trip 04 - 05/2026: Horseshoe Bend Overlook & Hanging Garden Trail/ Page, AZ (day 19)

  Nach Feierabend ging es am Nachmittag zum nahegelegenen Horseshoe Bend, einem hufeisenförmigen, tief in den Fels eingeschnittenen Mäander (natürlich geformte, weite Flussschlinge) des Colorado River nahe der Stadt Page. Er wird auch als "östlicher Rand des Grand Canyons“ bezeichnet. Horseshoe Bend lässt sich von der steilen Felskante oberhalb der Schleife aus betrachten. Jährlich zieht es rund 2 Millionen Besucher hierher.

Vom Parkplatz sind es 2,4 Kilometer Rundweg bis zum Aussichtspunkt. Während der Wanderweg und der Aussichtspunkt zum Territorium der Navajo Nation gehören, liegt der Parkplatz auf dem Gebiet der Stadt Page. Die Stadt Page erhebt an der Parkstelle am Ausgangspunkt des Weges zu Horseshoe Bend eine Parkgebühr von $10 pro Auto. Die Pässe von "America the Beautiful "oder des National Park Service gelten für diesen Parkplatz nicht.

After finishing work for the day, we headed to nearby Horseshoe Bend—a horseshoe-shaped meander (a naturally formed, sweeping river loop) of the Colorado River, carved deep into the rock near the town of Page. It is also referred to as the "eastern rim of the Grand Canyon." Horseshoe Bend can be viewed from the steep cliff edge overlooking the loop; the site attracts around 2 million visitors annually.

The round-trip hike from the parking lot to the viewpoint covers 2.4 kilometers. While the hiking trail and the viewpoint lie within Navajo Nation territory, the parking lot is located within the town of Page. The town of Page charges a $10 parking fee per vehicle at the trailhead lot for Horseshoe Bend. "America the Beautiful" passes and National Park Service passes are not valid for this parking area.

Man sieht, dass recht viele Leute hier waren, aber wie überall bekommt man mit etwas Geduld doch gute Fotos.

You can see that quite a lot of people were here, but—as is the case everywhere—with a little patience, you can still get good photos.

Der Besuch hier dauerte knapp 45 Minuten und da wir Pirate im klimatisierten Camper gelassen hatten, hielten wir auch am Hanging Garden Trail. Auch dieser Wanderweg gehört zur Glen Canyon NRA, und man benötigt daher einen Parkpass. Der Trail ist ein 2,2-Kilometer-Rundweg vom Parkplatz aus. Hängende Gärten sind von Quellen gespeiste Pflanzengemeinschaften, die an der senkrechten Wand einer Klippe haften.

The visit here lasted just under 45 minutes, and since we had left Pirate in the air-conditioned Camper, we also stopped at the Hanging Garden Trail. This trail is also part of the Glen Canyon NRA, so a park pass is required. The trail is a 2.2-kilometer loop that starts at the parking lot. Hanging gardens are spring-fed plant communities that cling to the vertical face of a cliff.

Von der Trail-Seite aus kann man auch einen Blick auf den Glen-Canyon-Damm werfen.

A short drive from the trail, you can also catch a glimpse of the Glen Canyon Dam, this time from the other side.

Wir entschieden uns dann auch noch für einen Halt am Besucherzentrum des Glen-Canyon-Damms. Außen gibt es verschiedene Aussichtspunkte und innen Informationen über den Damm und seine Umgebung sowie Souvenirs.

We also decided to stop at the Glen Canyon Dam Visitor Center. Outside, there are various viewpoints, while inside, there is information about the dam and its surroundings, as well as souvenirs.

Den Rest des Tages verbrachten wir wieder am Camper.

We spent the rest of the day back at the Camper.

road trip 04 - 05/2026: Navajo National Monument, AZ (day 18)

 Am Sonntag besuchten wir das Navajo National Monument. Hier befinden sich drei gut erhaltene Felsbehausungen der Ancestral-Puebloan-Kultur: Keet Seel (Broken Pottery/ Kitsʼiil), Betatakin (Ledge House/ Bitátʼahkin) und Inscription House (Tsʼah Biiʼ Kin). Inscription House kann nicht besichtigt werden, da der Trail dorthin dauerhaft geschlossen wurde, aus Angst vor Zerstörung. Keet Seel erfordert eine Anmeldung für eine Wanderung mit einem Ranger, da sie 27 Kilometer lang ist und eine Übernachtung erfordert. Betatakin kann man von einem Aussichtspunkt sehr einfach anschauen, aber zu bestimmten Terminen auch mit einem Ranger hinwandern, der Weg ist recht steil und je nach Route zwischen 5 und 8 Kilometern lang.

On Sunday, we visited the Navajo National Monument. It is home to three well-preserved cliff dwellings of the Ancestral Puebloan culture: Keet Seel (Broken Pottery/Kitsʼiil), Betatakin (Ledge House/Bitátʼahkin), and Inscription House (Tsʼah Biiʼ Kin). Inscription House cannot be visited because the trail leading to it has been permanently closed due to concerns about potential damage. Visiting Keet Seel requires signing up for a ranger-led hike, as the trek covers 27 kilometers and necessitates an overnight stay. Betatakin can easily be viewed from an overlook, but it is also possible to hike there with a ranger on certain dates; the trail is quite steep and ranges from 5 to 8 kilometers in length, depending on the route.

Im Besucherzentrum holten wir uns eine Übersichtskarte und schauten uns auch die Ausstellung an.

We picked up an overview map at the visitor center and also took a look at the exhibition.

Am Besucherzentrum findet man auch einen verkleinerten Nachbau eines Schwitzhauses und eines Hogans. 

Im Schwitzhaus wurde in einem Feuerring aus Steinen mit Holz ein Feuer angezündet und der Eingang mit einer Decke abgedeckt. Durch das schwitzen, wurden die Menschen vom Dreck auf der Haut gereinigt, Wasser gab es in der Gegend hier naemlich wenig.

At the visitor center, you can also find a scaled-down replica of a sweat house and a hogan.

Inside the sweat lodge, a wood fire was lit within a stone fire ring, and the entrance was covered with a blanket. Sweating cleansed the people of dirt on their skin, as water was scarce in the area.

Ein Hogan war die traditionelle Hauptwohnstätte der Navajo (Diné) im Südwesten der USA. Diese kuppelförmigen Bauten wurden typischerweise aus Holzpfosten oder Stein errichtet und mit Erde verkleidet; ihr Eingang ist nach Osten ausgerichtet, um die aufgehende Sonne zu begrüßen.

A hogan was the traditional primary dwelling of the Navajo (Diné) in the southwestern United States. These dome-shaped structures were typically built of wooden posts or stone and covered with earth; their entrances faced east to welcome the rising sun.

Vom Besucherzentrum gehen drei Wanderwege los. Wir starteten mit dem Weg zum Betatakin Dwelling. Der Weg ist behindertengerecht und ein 1,6-Kilometer-Rundtrip.

Three hiking trails start from the visitor center. We began with the trail to Betatakin Pueblo. The trail is accessible and is a 1-mile  round trip.

Als Nächstes folgten wir dem Aspen Trail. Dieser ist 1.3 Kilometer lang und es geht rund 100 Meter recht steil runter. Den fanden meine Knie nicht so toll, aber nun gut :-).

Next, we followed the Aspen Trail. It is 0.8 miles long and descends quite steeply—about 300ft. My knees didn't exactly love it, but oh well :-).

Und als Letztes nahmen wir den Canyon View Trail, der ebenfalls ein 1,3-Kilometer-Rundweg ist. Nach ca. 400 m mussten wir jedoch umdrehen. Es waren zwar nur rund 25 Grad aufgrund der Höhe, aber es gab keinerlei Schatten, und Pirate zeigte uns, dass er erledigt war. Als ein Baum kam, hat er sich hingelegt und das war's. Wir haben dann ca. 10 Min. gewartet, bis er etwas abgekühlt war, und sind dann zurück zum Auto gegangen, Pirate hat Vorrang.

Finally, we took the Canyon View Trail, a 0.8-mile loop. However, we had to turn back after about 250 yards. Although the temperature was only around 78F due to the altitude, there was absolutely no shade, and Pirate made it clear he was done. When we reached a tree, he simply lay down, and that was that. We waited about 10 minutes for him to cool down a bit and then headed back to the car—Pirate comes first.

Wir fuhren dann zurück zum Campingplatz.

We then drove back to the campsite.

Wir hatten dann eine ruhige Zeit am Camper bei bestem Wetter.
