road trip 04 - 06/2024: Walnut Canyon NM, Wupatki NM & Sunset Crater Vulcano NM (AZ), day 23

An diesem Tag hiess es frueh aufstehen, denn wir hatten einiges vor uns. Die 3 National Monumente, die wir besuchen wollten, lagen aber alle dicht beieinander. 

We had to get up early because we had big plans for this day. The three National Monuments we wanted to visit were all close to each other.

1. Walnut Canyon National Monument

Morgens war es noch recht kuehl, aber das war ok, da wir einige Treppen vor uns hatten, um zu den Felsenbehausungen zu kommen. Das National Monument befindet sich auf einer Höhe von 1932 m (Canyonboden) bis 2039 m (Canyonrand). Wir starteten mit dem Island Trail, ein ca 1 Meile/ 1.5 km langer Rundweg der etwa 60 m in den Canyon herabfuehrt, vorbei an 25 Felsenbehausungen. Der Bau der Felsbehausungen bz die damit verbundene Besiedlung des Canyons begann um das Jahr 1100, als das Volk der Anasazi sich hier niederliessen bevor sie nur etwa 100 Jahre später weiter südwestlich zogen, was vermutlich zu einer Assimilation in die Hopi-Kultur führte.

It was still quite cool in the morning, but that was ok as we had a few stairs ahead of us to get to the cliff dwellings. The National Monument is located at an altitude of about 7.000 ft. We started with the Island Trail, an approximately 1 mile/1.5 km long circular route that descends approximately 185 ft into the canyon, past 25 rock dwellings. The construction of the cliff dwellings and the associated settlement of the canyon began around 1100 when the Anasazi people settled here before moving further southwest only about 100 years later, which probably led to assimilation into the Hopi culture.

Here you have a good view of the rock dwellings before going down the stairs.

Auch an den gegenueberliegenen Felswaenden sieht man diverse Bauten.

You can also see various buildings on the rock faces opposite.

Entlang des Weges sind immer wieder Hinweisschildern mit Erklaerungen zur Bauweise aber auch Alltag der Bewohner.

Along the way, there are always signs with explanations about the construction method and also the everyday life of the residents.

Teile sind auch sehr gut erhalten/ restauriert fuer einen realen Eindruck.

Parts are also very well preserved/restored for a real impression.

Anschliessend spazierten wir noch den Rim Trail entlang, von dem man auch nochmal einen guten Blick auf die "Insel" hatte.

We then walked along the Rim Trail, which offered another good view of the “island”.

2. Wupatki National Monument

Unser naechstes Ziel war das Wupatki National Monument wo man verschiedene Pueblo-Ruinen der Anasazi-Kultur besuchen kann. Die Wupatki-Ruine war im 12. Jahrhundert das größte bekannte Bauwerk auf dem nordamerikanischen Kontinent.  

Our next destination was the Wupatki National Monument where you can visit various Pueblo ruins of the Anasazi culture. The Wupatki Ruins were the largest known structure on the North American continent in the 12th century.

Wir begannen unseren Beuch mit den Ruinen der "Lomaki und Box Canyon Pueblos". Der Schotterweg ist recht kurz mit 0,5 Meilen / 0,8 km. Lomaki bedeutet in der Hopi-Sprache „Schönes Haus“. Zuerst kommt man an 2 kleinen Gebaeuden vorbei, die sich auf beiden Seiten des Erdrisses befinden wohingegen am Ende des Weges findet man dann ein Gebaeude welches 9 Raeume hatte. Frueher gab es hier aber noch deutlich mehr Gebaeude.

We started our visit with the ruins of the "Lomaki and Box Canyon Pueblos". The gravel trail is quite short at 0.5 miles / 0.8 km. Lomaki means “Beautiful House” in the Hopi language. First, you pass 2 small buildings located on both sides of the earth crack whereas at the end of the path you find a building that had 9 rooms. There used to be a lot more buildings here.

Der zweite Halt war an der "Zitadelle und Nalakihu Pueblos".

Nalakihu ist ein Hopi-Wort und bedeutet „Haus außerhalb des Dorfes“ und bezieht sich auf das kleinere Sandsteingebäude am Anfang des Weges. Klein ist dabei relative, den es hatte zehn Räume im Erdgeschoss und drei oder vier Räume im zweiten Stock.

Die "Zitadelle" liegt auf einem kleinen Huegel und kann von jedem der umliegenden kleineren Pueblos wie Lomaki und Box Canyon gesehen warden und frueher gab es im nahen Umkreis hunderte kleinerer Pueblo-Strukturen (1–20 Räume). Gebauso wurden Spuren landwirtschaftlicher Felder, Wassereinzugsgebiete und Staudämme gefunden sowie Samen von domestizierten Pflanzen wie Mais, Kürbis, Bohnen, Tabak und sogar Baumwolle.

The second stop was at the "Citadel and Nalakihu Pueblos".

Nalakihu is a Hopi word meaning “house outside the village” and refers to the smaller sandstone building at the beginning of the trail. Small is relative, as it had ten rooms on the ground floor and three or four rooms on the second floor.

The "Citadel" sits on a small hill and can be seen from any of the surrounding smaller pueblos such as Lomaki and Box Canyon, and there were previously hundreds of smaller pueblo structures (1-20 rooms) in the nearby area. Gebauso found traces of agricultural fields, watersheds, and dams, as well as seeds of domesticated plants such as corn, squash, beans, tobacco and even cotton.

Auf dem Weg zum dritten Halt sahen wir dann immer wieder die Anzeichen des naheliegenden Vulkans.

On the way to the third stop, we kept seeing the signs of the nearby volcano.

Der dritte Halt war an der grossen Wupatki Ruine welches sich direkt hinter dem Besucherzentrum befindet. Dieses Pueblo wurde nach Ausbruch des Sunset Crater Vulkans im 11. Jahrhundert errichtet und es hatte 104 Zimmer, einen Ballspielplatz und ein natürlichem Blasloch (aus welchem Luft enweicht). Forscher nehmen an,dass zum Ende des 12. Jahrhunderts rund 85 bis 100 Menschen im Wupatki Pueblo lebten, dem größten Gebäude im Umkreis von mindestens fünfzig Meilen. Innerhalb eines Tagesmarsches umzingelten mehrere Tausend Einwohner Wupatki.

The third stop was at the large Wupatki ruins located directly behind the visitor center. This pueblo was built after the Sunset Crater volcano erupted in the 11th century and had 104 rooms, a ball court, and a natural blowhole (from which air escapes). Researchers believe that by the end of the 12th century, around 85 to 100 people lived at Wupatki Pueblo, the largest building within at least fifty miles. Within a day's march, several thousand residents surrounded Wupatki.

Diese Ruine war sehr, sehr beeindruckend! Und als letztes ging es dann zum Wukoki Pueblo, einem beeindruckenden Gebäude mit acht Räumen, das auf einem großen Sandsteinsockel errichtet wurde. Auch dieses Gebaeude war zwischen dem frühen 11. und dem mittleren 12. Jahrhundert n. Chr. bewohnt und an hat von hier aus großartige Ausblicke auf die San Francisco Peaks in Flagstaff. Der große Turm war drei Stockwerke hoch und enthält noch die originalen Holzbalken der Dach- und Deckenkonstruktion.

This ruin was very, very impressive! And finally, we went to the Wukoki Pueblo, an impressive eight-room building built on a large sandstone base. This building was also inhabited between the early 11th and mid-12th centuries AD and has great views of the San Francisco Peaks in Flagstaff. The large tower was three stories high and still contains the original wooden beams of the roof and ceiling construction.

3.  Sunset Crater Vulcano National Monument

Inzwischen war es schon spaeter Nachmittag und unser Rueckweg fuehrte dann noch durch das Sunset Crater Vulcano National Monument. Der Sunset Crater ist ein kleiner Vulkan (Höhe 2451 m) und Besucher können am Fuß des Vulkans die Struktur aus losen Lapilli (Lavagestein) und die Lavaströme erkunden.

By now it was late afternoon and our way back led through the Sunset Crater Vulcano National Monument. Sunset Crater is a small volcano (elevation 8,042 ft) and visitors can explore the loose lapilli (lava rock) structure and lava flows at the base of the volcano.

Unser erster Halt war am Cinder Hill Overlook von wo man direkt auf den Krater des Vulkans schaut.

Our first stop was at Cinder Hill Overlook, where you can look directly at the crater of the volcano.

Wir liefen den Lava Flow Trail entlang, mitten durch das Lavageroell.

We walked along the Lava Flow Trail, right through the lava debris.

Bonito Vista Trail

Ein Schild weist darauf hin, dass alle Astronauten die jemals den Mond betreten haben, auch hier trainiert haben,

Zum Schluss ging es noch etwas enlang des A'a Trails bevor wir zum Campground zurueckkehrten. Ein super interessanter und lehrreicher Tag lag hinter uns.

Finally, we walked along the A'a Trail before returning to the campground. A super interesting and educational day was behind us.
