road trip 04 - 05/2026: Bears Ears National Monument & Canyonlands National Park, UT (day 38)

 Unser Hauptziel des Tages war ein anderer Abschnitt des Canyonlands NPs: der Needles-Abschnitt, der eher abgelegen ist und somit im Vergleich zum Island-in-the-Sky-Abschnitt nur wenige Besucher sieht. Wir hatten rund 160 km/2 h Fahrt vor uns und die Strecke ist wirklich schön, besonders da sie zwischendurch noch durch das Bears Ears National Monument führt. Ein weiteres National Monument, das die aktuelle Regierung am 13.7.0206 um knapp 90 % verkleinert hat :-(.

Our main goal for the day was a different section of Canyonlands National Park: the Needles District. It is rather remote and, consequently, sees far fewer visitors compared to the Island in the Sky District. We had a drive of about 160 km (roughly two hours) ahead of us—a truly beautiful route, especially since it passes through Bears Ears National Monument along the way. This is another national monument that the current administration reduced in size by nearly 90% on July 13, 2016 :-(.

Als wir in Moab am Highway ankamen, sahen wir die am Vorabend abgestellten Wagen des Canyon Spirit, eines Pendants zum Canadian Rockies Zug. Der Canyon Spirit fährt die Strecke von Denver nach Moab (und umgekehrt) in 2 Tagen mit einer Übernachtung in Glenwood Springs. Auch diese Tour ist preislich gehoben, ähnlich wie die kanadische Route.

When we arrived at the highway in Moab, we saw the *Canyon Spirit* train cars—parked there the previous evening—which are the counterpart to the Canadian Rockies train. The *Canyon Spirit* travels the route between Denver and Moab (and vice versa) over two days, with an overnight stop in Glenwood Springs. This tour also comes with a high price tag, similar to the Canadian route.

Nach ca einer Stunde biegt man vom US 191 auf die 211 ab und schon fühlt man sich ganz allein. Kurz darauf beginnt das Bears Ears National Monument, ein wunderbares Fleckchen Erde mit vielen Campingplätzen, Off-Road- und Wanderstrecken, die auch zu hunderte Jahre alten Cliffruinen führen.

After about an hour, you turn off US 191 onto Route 211, and suddenly you feel completely alone. Shortly thereafter, you reach Bears Ears National Monument—a wonderful place featuring numerous campsites, off-road trails, and hiking paths that lead to centuries-old cliff dwellings.

Die Aussichten von der Straße aus beim Fahren sind total beeindruckend.

Der erste Weg führt wie immer zum Besucherzentrum, um einen Magneten zu kaufen und Infobroschüren abzuholen. Anschließend folgten wir der Straße durch den Park zu den verschiedenen Sehenswürdigkeiten.

As always, the first stop was the visitor center to buy a magnet and pick up information brochures. Afterward, we followed the road through the park to the various sights.

Wir liefen den Pothole Point Trail (pothole = Schlagloch), von dem man auch einen schönen Blick auf die Needles (= Nadeln) hat.

We hiked the Pothole Point Trail, which also offers a beautiful view of the Needles.

Big Spring Canyon Overlook, leider ohne jegliches Wasser. Hier starten auch jede Menge Wanderwege; ansonsten ist es das Ende der Straße, und man muss umdrehen.

Big Spring Canyon Overlook—unfortunately, there is absolutely no water here. Many hiking trails start here as well; otherwise, it is the end of the road, and you have to turn back.

Wir fuhren zurück und bogen auf die Schotterstraße zum Elephant Hill ab. Unterwegs ist wieder so eine tolle Landschaft.

We drove back and turned onto the gravel road to Elephant Hill. The scenery along the way is amazing, too.

Leider war der Parkplatz komplett voll, also drehten wir wieder um.

Unfortunately, the parking lot was completely full, so we turned back.

Zum Abschluss nahmen wir die Schotterstraße zur "Cave Spring" ( = Höhlenquelle).

To wrap things up, we took the gravel road to Cave Spring.

Hier findet man ein altes Cowboy-Camp unter dem Felsüberhang.

Here, you can find an old cowboy camp beneath the rock overhang.

Ein Stück weiter findet man dann die Höhlenquelle.

A few yards further, one can find the cave spring.

Wer nicht gut zu Fuß ist, läuft zurück zum Parkplatz; für etwas abenteuerlustigere Menschen geht es zwei Leitern hoch, um einen weiteren tollen Überblick über das Gebiet zu bekommen.

Those who aren't steady on their feet can walk back to the parking lot; the more adventurous can climb two ladders to get another great view of the area.

Anschließend fuhren wir zurück Richtung Moab.

Afterward, we drove back towards Moab.

Direkt am Highway 191 findet man noch den Wilson Arch und so hielten wir hier auch für ein Foto.
