road trip 04 - 05/2026: Cottonwood Canyon Road, UT (day 31)

 Auch an diesem Tag war eine unbefestigte Straße unser Ausflugsziel: Wir folgten der Cottonwood Canyon Road von Cannonville bis zur US 89 nahe der Paria Ranger Station.

On this day, too, an unpaved road was our destination: we followed Cottonwood Canyon Road from Cannonville to US 89 near the Paria Ranger Station.

Die Cottonwood Canyon Road beginnt am Kodachrome State Park und führt von dort 65 Kilometer unbefestigter Straße bis zur US 89. Auch für diese Strecke gilt, dass sie bei Regen nicht befahrbar ist und man einen 4x4-Antrieb haben sollte. Auch dieses Gebiet gehört zum Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument.

Cottonwood Canyon Road begins at Kodachrome State Park, and from there it is a 40-mile stretch of unpaved road to US 89. As with this route, it is impassable in the rain, and a 4x4 vehicle is recommended. This area also belongs to the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument.

Kurz nach Beginn mussten wir durch ein Flussbett fahren. Ein anderes Auto (normales Stufenheck) stand auf der anderen Seite und traute sich nicht.

Shortly after setting off, we had to drive through a riverbed. Another car—a standard sedan—was stopped on the other side, afraid to proceed.

Trailer zu ziehen ist hier nicht empfohlen, aber vor uns fuhren 2 große Pferdetrailer. Es war cool, diese später wiederzusehen und so wie sie fuhren, waren sie anscheinend einheimisch.

Towing a trailer isn't recommended here, yet two large horse trailers were driving ahead of us. It was cool to see them again later, and the way they drove suggested they were locals.

Nach 16 km erreichten wir den Grosvenor Arch.

After 10 miles we arrived at Grosvenor Arch.

Der „Arch“ besteht aus zwei Bögen, die sich ca. 46 Meter über den Boden erheben. Der größere der beiden Bögen hat einen Durchmesser von ca. 30 Metern. Im Jahr 1949 wurde der Bogen zu Ehren von Gilbert Hovey Grosvenor benannt, dem Präsidenten der National Geographic Society und ersten hauptberuflichen Chefredakteur des *National Geographic Magazine*. Der Grosvenor Arch ist einer der größten Felsenbögen in diesem Schutzgebiet.

The "Arch" consists of two spans rising 150 feet above the ground. The larger of the two spans has a diameter of nearly 100 feet. In 1949, the arch was named in honor of Gilbert Hovey Grosvenor, president of the National Geographic Society and the first full-time editor-in-chief of *National Geographic Magazine*. Grosvenor Arch is one of the largest rock arches within this protected area.

weiter geht's/ we moved on

Am Cottonwood Narrows North Trailhead liefen wir ein gutes Stück in die Schlucht hinein, es waren keine anderen Menschen dort.

At the Cottonwood Narrows North Trailhead, we walked a good distance into the canyon; there was no one else around.

Auch entlang dieser Straße sahen wir eine unglaubliche Landschaft und kaum andere Leute.

Along this road, too, we saw incredible scenery and hardly any other people.

Der Paria-Fluss führte kaum Wasser.

The Paria River carried hardly any water.

Am Strassenrand sahen wir dann die 2 Pferdetrailer, die wir schon am Anfang gesehen hatten. Diesmal waren nun aber die Cowboys mit den Pferden unterwegs.

By the side of the road, we then saw the two horse trailers we had spotted earlier. This time, however, the cowboys were out with the horses.

Wir haben unser Ziel problemlos erreicht. Zurück fuhren wir dann aber die 200 km entlang des Highways 89.

We reached our destination without any problems, but for the return journey, we drove the 127 miles along Highway 89.
