road trip 04 - 05/2026: Arches National Park, UT (day 37)

 Diesmal ging es am späten Vormittag wieder in den Arches Nationalpark, und somit gab es einige Wartezeit am Eingang. Es war aber nicht zu schlimm, und wir fuhren direkt zum Delicate-Arch-Wanderweg.

This time, we headed to Arches National Park again in the late morning, so there was some waiting at the entrance. It wasn't too bad, though, and we drove straight to the Delicate Arch trail.

Delicate Arch ist das bekannteste Wahrzeichen des Arches-Nationalparks und ist auch auf den Standard-Autokennzeichen von Utah abgebildet. Es handelt sich um einen 16 Meter (52 Fuß) hohen, freistehenden natürlichen Sandsteinbogen. Zwar führt ein Wanderweg zu diesem beliebten Fotomotiv, aber das Klettern auf den Arch ist verboten. Ein interessanter Fakt: Der Fackelzug der Olympischen Winterspiele 2002 führte durch den Bogen.

Der Parkplatz für den Wanderweg ist eigentlich immer gut gefüllt, und wenn man Pech hat, muss man einige Male zirkeln. Der Hin- und Rückweg zum Delicate Arch ist insgesamt 4,8 Kilometer lang und weist einen Höhenunterschied von 146 Metern auf. Der Pfad ist gut erkennbar, aber eigentlich braucht man nur den anderen Besuchern hinterherzulaufen. Was nicht zu unterschätzen ist, ist der teilweise steile Anstieg über offenes Felsgelände. Auf den letzten 183 Metern bis zum Erreichen des Bogens verläuft der Weg über ein schmales Felsband.

 

Delicate Arch is the most famous landmark in Arches National Park and also appears on Utah's standard license plates. It is a free-standing natural sandstone arch measuring 52 feet in height. Although a hiking trail leads to this popular photo spot, climbing on the arch itself is prohibited. An interesting fact: the 2002 Winter Olympics torch relay passed through the arch.

The parking lot for the trail is usually crowded, and if you are unlucky, you may have to circle around a few times to find a spot. The round-trip hike to Delicate Arch covers a total distance of 3 miles and involves an elevation gain of 480 feet. The path is clearly visible, but really, you just need to follow the other visitors. What shouldn't be underestimated, however, is the sometimes steep ascent over open rocky terrain. For the final 200 yards before reaching the arch, the path follows a narrow rock ledge.

Am Arch bildet sich dann oft eine Schlange für Fotos. Leider wurden wir von einem anderen Besucher nur schlecht fotografiert, wir sind ganz klein unter dem Bogen zu erkennen. Nochmal wollten wir uns dann nicht anstellen und haben später getrennte Fotos von uns gemacht.

A line for photos often forms at the arch. Unfortunately, another visitor took a poor photo of us; we appear as tiny figures beneath the arch. We didn't want to get back in line, so we took separate photos of each other later on.

Wir waren rund 45 Min. oben am Aussichtspunkt und hatten dort auch ein kleines Picknick. Dann ging es wieder zurück zum Parkplatz.

We spent about 45 minutes up at the viewpoint and had a small picnic there. Then we headed back to the parking lot.

Wenn man wieder unten ist, geht vom Trail noch ein anderer Weg ab, der zu einer Felswand mit ein paar Petroglyphen führt.

Once you are back down, another path branches off the trail, leading to a rock face with a few petroglyphs.

Kurz vor dem Parkplatz findet man noch die historische Wolfe Ranch, die in den frühen 1900ern bewirtschaftet wurde.

Just before the parking lot, you will find the historic Wolfe Ranch, which was farmed in the early 1900s.

Von dort fuhren wir nun wieder zurück Richtung Eingang, hielten aber noch an der Park Avenue, da dort gerade ein Parkplatz frei wurde. Wir entschieden uns dann spontan, den Trail ein Stück zu laufen.

From there, we headed back toward the entrance but stopped at Park Avenue, as a parking spot had just opened up. We then spontaneously decided to walk a stretch of the trail.

Es ging nun zurück zum Camper, um Pirate abzuholen. So konnte er beim nächsten Ziel dabei sein.

They headed back to the camper to pick up Pirate. That way, he could join them for the next destination.
