road trip 04 - 05/2026: Kodachrome Basin State Park, UT (day 29)

 Nur ein paar Fahrtminuten von unserem RV Park entfernt liegt der Kodachrome Basin SP. Eigentlich wollten wir hier auch campen, aber einen Platz mit Strom zu bekommen, war uns nicht vergönnt. Aber zum Wandern konnten wir trotzdem kommen.

Kodachrome Basin State Park is just a few minutes' drive from our RV park. We had actually intended to camp there, too, but we weren't able to secure a site with hookups. Still, we were able to visit for a hike.

Der Kodachrome Basin State Park ist bekannt für seine schimmernden, rötlichen Felsformationen und den Kontrast, den sie mit dem blauen Himmel bilden. Kodachrome Basin State Park is known for its shimmering reddish rock formations and the contrast they create against the blue sky. Towering, monolithic rock spires or chimneys rise from the valley floor or project from the sandstone cliffs. This coloration and contrast prompted the National Geographic Society—with the consent of the Kodak Film Corp.—to name the park "Kodachrome" in 1949.

Da wir erst am frühen Nachmittag hier ankamen, mussten wir uns entscheiden, welche Wege wir wandern wollten. Als Erstes entschieden wir uns für den Panorama Trail inkl. Panorama Point war zusammen knapp 6,5 km. Die Sonne war meist hinter Wolken und so war es auch nicht zu warm für Pirate.

Since we didn't arrive here until early afternoon, we had to decide which trails to hike. First, we chose the Panorama Trail—including Panorama Point—which totaled just under 4 miles. The sun was mostly behind the clouds, so it wasn't too hot for Pirate.

Am ersten Parkplatz stand dann ein großer Reisebus. Die Gruppe kam uns ein Stück entgegen, aber weiter als 200 m konnten sie gar nicht vom Bus weg, da es dann schon für sie weiterging. Zum zweiten Parkplatz konnten sie gar nicht weiterfahren, denn der war zu klein. Noch sind wir ja solchen Bustouren total abgeneigt und haben eher Angst davor, dass man im Alter auf so etwas dann angewiesen ist und völlig unflexibel ist.

A large tour bus was parked at the first parking area. The group walked a short distance toward us, but they couldn't stray more than 200 meters from the bus, as they had to move on soon after. They couldn't even drive on to the second parking area because it was too small. We are still completely averse to such bus tours; we actually dread the idea of ​​having to rely on them in old age and being left with absolutely no flexibility.

Wir fuhren dann weiter zum zweiten Parkplatz, wo der Angels Palace Trail startete. Hier geht es dann erstmal gut nach oben hinauf für eine fantastische Aussicht.

We then drove on to the second parking lot, where the Angels Palace Trail began. From there, the path climbs steeply at first, leading to a fantastic view.

Man hat einen tollen Blick auf den darunterliegenden Canyon.

(Leider) kam dann die Sonne voll raus, und das beendete unseren Wandernachmittag, da wir schon im hohen 20er-Bereich waren, und das war nix mehr für Pirate. Somit ging es zurück zum Auto und wir ließen den darunterliegenden Canyon aus.

(Unfortunately,) the sun then came out in full force, bringing our afternoon hike to an end; temperatures were already in the high eighties, which was too much for Pirate. So, we headed back to the car and skipped the canyon below.

Am Campground bekamen wir dann die Möglichkeit, auf einen anderen Stellplatz umzuziehen, da 2 Nächte zuvor ein großer Bus neben uns einparkte, mit einem Senioren-Ehepaar, das seine 3 Hunde permanent bellen ließ, egal, ob es selbst anwesend war oder nicht. Die Campground-Betreiber waren wirklich nett und hilfsbereit. An dieser Stelle waren die beiden Stellplätze links und rechts von uns bis zur Abfahrt frei.

At the campground, we were given the chance to move to a different site; two nights earlier, a large bus had parked next to us, carrying an elderly couple who let their three dogs bark constantly, regardless of whether the owners were present. The campground operators were truly kind and helpful in this regard. In this new spot, the sites to our left and right remained unoccupied until we left.
