12/2025: Warschau/ Warsaw, PL (3)

Für Sonntag hatten wir für 16.15 Uhr Tickets für den Kultur- und Wissenschaftspalast zur Aussichtsplattform ergattert. Reguläre Tickets für Erwachsene kosten 30 Zloty, also rund 7 Euro, was wir völlig okay fanden. Ist man im Eingangsbereich, stellt man sich dann in die Schlange an, die zum Fahrstuhl führt. Hier werden dann auch die Tickets kontrolliert.

For Sunday, we managed to snag tickets for the observation deck at the Palace of Culture and Science for 4:15 PM. Regular adult tickets cost 30 zloty—roughly 7 euros—which we felt was a perfectly reasonable price. Once you are in the entrance area, you join the line leading to the elevator; this is also where tickets are checked.

Das Schild gibt nochmals einige Informationen, unter anderem, dass die Eröffnung am 21. Juli 1955 stattfand, inzwischen aber die Fahrstühle erneuert wurden und man nun in 20 Sekunden am oberen Stockwerk ankommt. Der Kulturpalast ist neben dem MDM-Wohnviertel das einzige komplett erhaltene Baudenkmal der Architektur des Sozialistischen Realismus Warschaus, ein Dokument der ersten Periode des Wiederaufbaus der polnischen Hauptstadt. 

The sign provides further information, including the fact that the opening took place on July 21, 1955, but notes that the elevators have since been modernized, and one now reaches the top floor in 20 seconds. Alongside the MDM residential district, the Palace of Culture is the only fully preserved architectural monument of Socialist Realism in Warsaw—a testament to the first period of the Polish capital's reconstruction.

Nach dem aussteigen aus dem Fahrstuhl kommt man in den Aussenbereich der Plattform, auf welcher man dann einmal komplett herum laufen kann und so die Aussicht zu allen Seiten hat. 

Upon exiting the elevator, you enter the outdoor area of ​​the platform, where you can walk all the way around to enjoy views in every direction.

Diese Aussichtsplattform war uebrigens unser Ziel am naechsten Abend.

Nach rund einer Stunde ging es fuer uns dann wieder zum Ausgang.

Im Jahr 2010 wurde eine LED Beleuchtung am Gebaeude installiert, und so kann es in allen erdenklichen Farben erleuchtet werden.

In 2010, LED lighting was installed on the building, allowing it to be illuminated in every conceivable color.

Einen Besuch hier koennen wir auf jeden Fall empfehlen.

12/2025: Warschau/ Warsaw, PL (2)

 In Warschau gibt es ein interessantes Museum zum Leben unter dem Kommunismus. Man lernt über die Geschichte der Volksrepublik Polen, die von 1945 bis 1989 existierte, und findet eine grosse Ansammlung von Alltagsgegenständen bis hin zu einer nachgebauten, voll eingerichteten Standardwohnung sowie ein Café. Der Eintrittspreis ist moderat mit 32 PLN/ 7,50 Euro.

In Warsaw, there is an interesting museum dedicated to life under communism. Es gibt auch diverse Informationstafeln. Eine brachte viele Erinnerungen hoch. In den Ostblockstaaten herrschte chronische Mangelwirtschaft und vieles bekam man nur selten und wenn, dann mit langem Anstehen in Schlangen. Es wurde sich dennoch darüber lustig gemacht, im Sinne von: "Man fragt nicht, was es gibt, wenn man eine Schlange sieht, sondern stellt sich einfach mit an". Wenn man Glück hatte, bekam man dann Orangen, Bananen oder andere begehrte Dinge.

In the Eastern Bloc countries, a chronic economy of scarcity prevailed; many goods were rarely available, and when they were, obtaining them meant standing in long lines. Nevertheless, people made light of the situation—the prevailing attitude being: "When you see a line, you don't ask what's being sold; you simply join the queue." If you were lucky, you might end up with oranges, bananas, or other coveted items.

Mode/ fashion

Polen war berühmt für den Polski Fiat. Ein sehr, sehr kleines Auto, welches von den Besitzern aber gekonnt ausgenutzt wurde bei Transporten. Der 126P wurde liebevoll "Kleiner" (poln. "Maluch") genannt.

Wir durften uns sogar reinsetzen und es war sehr kuschelig da drinnen.

Poland was famous for the Polski Fiat—a very, very small car, yet one that its owners skillfully utilized for transport purposes. The 126P was affectionately nicknamed "the Little One" (Polish: "Maluch").

We were even allowed to sit inside, and it was very cozy.

Für DDR-Kinder war das Ferienlager oder der Urlaub in Polen schon deshalb beliebt, weil es hier Pepsi-Cola gab.

Wir liefen dann zur U-Bahn und dieser Bereich war typisch für die Bauweise des Sozialismus/Kommunismus.

Wir besuchten naschliessend das Alte Elektrizitaetswerk in welchem heute ein Einkaufszentrum untergebracht ist, die Konstruktion innen ist auf jeden Fall sehenswert.

Afterwards, we visited the Old Power Station—which now houses a shopping center—and the interior structure is definitely worth seeing.

Auf dem Rückweg in die Innenstadt kamen wir noch an einem Denkmal für das Warschauer Ghetto vorbei. Das Ghetto wurde 1940 eingerichtet und war während des Zweiten Weltkrieges das größte Ghetto, mit einer Einwohnerzahl von bis zu 460.000 Juden auf einer Fläche von nur 3,4 km² (1,3 sq mi). Die Mehrheit der hier internierten Menschen wurde in Konzentrationslager zur Tötung gebracht. Von den internierten Menschen des Warschauer Ghettos starben 265.000 im Konzentrationslager  Treblinka,  42.000 in  Majdanek und 92.000 innerhalb des Ghettos. Das Ghetto wurde im April 1943 nach einem Aufstand aufgelöst.

On our way back to the city center, we passed a memorial to the Warsaw Ghetto.
