Der grosse Tag war gekommen, Dominik hatte Geburtstag. Die beiden Glaser mit der kroatischen Schokocreme war ein symbolisches Geschenk, die Gummiente hat er sich selbst ausgesucht :-). Das Hauptgeburtstagsgeschenk war die Kroatien-Reise und ein bisschen gab es dann noch, als wir wieder in Berlin waren.
The big day had come, it was Dominik's birthday. The two glasses with the Croatian chocolate cream were a symbolic gift, he chose the rubber duck himself :-). The main birthday present was the trip to Croatia and there was a little bit left when we were back in Berlin.

Wir fuhren dann mit dem Mietauto nach Dubrovnik. Die Fahrt war absolut toll, soviele wunderbare Aussichten!

Auf diese Bruecke war ich sehr gespannt. Die Pelješac-Brücke verbindet die südöstliche kroatische Halbexklave mit dem Rest des Landes und umgeht nun den kurzen Küstenstreifen von Bosnien und Herzegowina in der Nähe von Neum. Die Brücke überspannt den Meereskanal zwischen Komarna auf dem nördlichen Festland und der Halbinsel Pelješac. Sie verläuft vollständig durch kroatisches Territorium und vermeidet dadurch die Grenzübergänge zu Bosnien und Herzegowina, die bisher notwendig waren und reduziert die Fahrtzeit. Der Bau begann am 30. Juli 2018, die Brücke und ihre Zufahrtsstraßen wurden am 26. Juli 2022 für den Verkehr freigegeben. Die Gesamtlänge betraegt 2.404 Meter.
I was very excited about this bridge. The Pelješac Bridge connects the southeastern Croatian semi-exclave with the rest of the country and now bypasses the short coastal strip of Bosnia and Herzegovina near Neum. The bridge spans the sea channel between Komarna on the northern mainland and the Pelješac peninsula. It runs entirely through Croatian territory, thereby avoiding the border crossings with Bosnia and Herzegovina that were previously necessary and reducing travel time. Construction began on July 30, 2018, and the bridge and its access roads opened to traffic on July 26, 2022. The total length is 7,887 feet (2,404 meters).

Nur kurze Zeit spaeter hatten wir unser Hotel in der Altstadt von Dubrovnik erreicht. Nach dem ausladen des Gepaecks ging es dann auch sofort ueber die Strasse rueber zum Eingang zur Altstadt.
We reached our hotel in the old town of Dubrovnik only a short time later. After unloading the luggage, we immediately walked across the street to the entrance to the old town.
Durch das Pile Tor betraten wir nun den historischen Stadtkern.

Wenn man durch das Pile Tor durch die Stadtmauer geht, kommt man direkt auf die die Hauptpromenade Dubrovniks: „Stradun“ (oder „Placa“ genannt). Diese ca 500 Jahre alte Strasse ist 300 Meter lang und befindet sich mitten im Stadtzentrum. Da jeder Tourist hier zwangslaeufig entlang kommt, ist sie in den Sommermonaten fast immer überfüllt (wir hatten mit April noch Glueck). Wir konnten das aber nachvollziehen, da auch wir uns hier haeufig aufgehalten haben dank der vielen Cafés, Geschäfte und Restaurants, die sich in den historischen Haeusern befinden. Es ist wirklich toll zu sehen, dass die Gebauede ihr Aussehen und somit Charme ueber so eine lange Zeit bewahrt haben. Ein interessanter Fakt ist, dass der Stradun ein zugeschüttete Meeresarm ist, der eine Insel vom Festland trennte. Seit 1979 ist Dubrovnik UNESCO-Welterbestätte.
If you go through the Pile Gate, you come directly to Dubrovnik's main promenade: “Stradun” (or “Placa”). This approximately 500-year-old street is 300 meters long and is located in the middle of the city center. Since every tourist inevitably comes here, it is almost always crowded in the summer months (we were lucky in April). But we could understand that because we also stayed here often thanks to the many cafes, shops, and restaurants in the historic houses. It's really great to see that the buildings have retained their appearance and charm over such a long time. An interesting fact is that the Stradun is a filled inlet that separated an island from the mainland. Dubrovnik has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979.

Wir liessen uns wieder einfach nur treiben, denn egal wo man entlanglief war es einfach nur schoen.
We just let ourselves drift again, because no matter where we walked, it was just beautiful.

Irgendwann kamen wir am Hafen an, von hier kann man Touren auf Ausflugsbooten machen oder auch einfach nur entspannt auf einer der Baenke oder den Restaurants sitzen.
At some point we arrived at the harbor, from here you can take tours on excursion boats or just sit and relax on one of the benches or in the restaurants.

Nach dem Abendessen ging es nochmal zum Hotel, dabei kamen wir vorbei an der Festung Lovrijenac, die wir an einem anderen Tag noch besuchen wuerden.
After dinner, we returned to the hotel and passed the Lovrijenac Fortress, which we would visit another day.
Dominik wollte im Hotel bleiben und Andreas und ich sind dann nochmal fuer die Abendstimmung in die Stadt. Am fruehen Abend fuhren jede Menge Reisebusse ab (Sammelpunkt ist genau vor dem Pile Tor) und so war es etwas leerer.
Dominik wanted to stay in the hotel and Andreas and I returned to the city for the evening atmosphere. In the early evening, there were a lot of coaches leaving (the collection point is right in front of the Pile Gate) so it wasn't as crowded anymore.

In den Gassen neben der Stradun gibts auch viele tolle, gemuetliche Restaurants.
There are also many great, cozy restaurants in the streets next to Stradun.
