Reise nach Koeln und Frankfurt/Main / A trip to Cologne and Frankfurt/Main

 Damit mir in Berlin nicht langweilig werden wuerde, hatte ich ab Montag eine sechstaegige Reise nach Koeln und Frankfurt. Ich habe naiverweise auf den Zug als Trabsportmittel gesetzt anstatt zu fliegen - nie wieder! Ich hatte mit Flix gebucht, und kurz bevor ich morgens zu Hause los wollte, kam die Nachricht, dass mein Zug 2 Stunden Verspaetung haette, es ist also nicht nur ein Problem der DB. Nun gut ... allerdings wurde es dann eine unendliche Reise, aus geplanten 5 Stunden Fahrt wurden 9 Stunden (aufgrund einer Baustelle und das wir an jeder verdammten Schienkreuzung der DB den Vorrang geben mussten) und ich war erst abends gegen 19 Uhr in Koeln, und hat mich somit kostebare Stunden mit Wally gekostet, mit der ich verabredet war. 

So I wouldn't be bored or feeling alone in Berlin, I had a trip scheduled to Cologne and Frankfurt for the next six days. Unfortunately, I had made the decision to go by train instead of by plane - never ever again! Shortly before I wanted to leave the apartment, I got a message that the train would be delayed by two hours. And instead of the scheduled 5 hours for the distance, it added up to 9 hours due to a detour and giving the right of way to every damn DB train (I used Flix). I arrived in Cologne around 7 pm, which meant I had lost 4 hours I would have spent with my dear friend Wally otherwise.

Wir bummelten noch kurz ueber den Weihnachtsmarkt am Dom, bevor wir ein Brauhaus aufsuchten und dort gegessen und lange gequatscht haben.

We strolled across the Christmas market at the Cathedral and then sat down inside a brewery to have some dinner and chat for hours.

Bevor ich mich wieder mit Wally am Morgen traf, bin ich noch schnell in den Dom reingegangen, sonst waere es kein echter Besuch in Koeln gewesen. Es war beeindruckend!

Before I met Wally again in the morning, I quickly went into the Cathedral, otherwise, it wouldn't have been a real visit to Cologne. It was soooo impressive! Detailed information about the Cathedrale can be found here:

Es gab dann eine Stadtfuehrung durch Wally und das besondere war, es ging nicht primaer um Sehenswuerdigkeiten sondern Stationen ihres Lebens hier in Koeln mit vielen interessanten Geschichten dazu, das haette ich ewig mitmachen koennen.

Wally gave me a special tour of her Cologne, with the focus not on sights but on stations of her life in this city with many interesting stories. I could have done that forever.

Mit Wally ging es dann ueber den Rhein hinueber. Wir ueberquerten die Dombruecke welche bekannt ist fuer die Liebesschloesser. Die muessen bei der Menge inzwischen ein wahnsinniges Gewicht zur Konstruktion hinzufuegen.

Next, Wally and I crossed the Rhein. We used the Cathedral Bridge which is known for all the love locks. These must add an incredible amount of extra weight to the construction.

Nun ueberquerten wir die Deutzer Bruecke.

We crossed the Deutzer Bridge.

Wir liefen weiter zum Rheinauhafen.

We continued our walk to the Rheinau Port.

Fuer eine tolle Aussicht luf Wally mich ins Riesenrad ein.

For a great view, Wally invited me to a ride on the Ferris wheel.

Langsam bummelten wir wieder Richtung Innenstadt, da wir noch verabredet waren.

We strolled back to the inner city since we wanted to meet another friend.

Konrad Adenauer sah auch aus als ob ihm das Wetter nicht so gefaellt.

Sabine hatte was in Koeln zu erledigen und so schafften wir drei es uns endlich zu treffen. Wir waehlten ein nettes Kaffee und verbrachten Stunden bei einem Kaffeeklatsch, deutscher geht es nicht. Dabei hatten wir eine unangenehme Begegnung mit einer Dame, die uns das nicht so gegoennt hat und wir mussten am Ende dann herzlich lachen ueber sie.

We met with Sabine who had an appointment in Cologne that day, and so were able to meet after for some German "Kaffeeklatsch" (which is basically an informal gathering over coffee and some cake/pie to chat or gossip, often lasting for hours). We had such a great time!

Spaeter ging es dann zu dritt ueber den Weihnachtsmarkt in der Innenstadt, natuerlich mit Gluehwein :-) welcher genau richtig war bei dem Wetter.

Later we visited the nearby Christmas market and enjoyed some mulled wine which was perfect for this kind of weather.

Irgendwann hatten wir alle Hunger, Sabines Mann kam hinzu und wir suchten uns wieder ein Brauhaus.

At some point, we got hungry. Sabine's husband joined us and we sat down in one of the breweries.

Am Abend schlenderten wir noch einmal ueber den wunderschoenen Weihnachtsmarkt mit seinen vielen tollen Buden.

And later we all strolled again across the Christmas market with all its wonderful booths. 

Leider mussten wir uns dann doch verabschieden, da Sabine und ihr Mann noch 2h Fahrt vor sich hatten. Es war ein wunderbarer Tag und ich bin dankbar dass es so geklappt hat. Wally und ich sind dann wieder Richtung Dom, da dort mein Hotel war und Ihre Bahnstation.

Unfortunately, later in the evening, we had to say goodbye since Sabine and her husband had to drive for 2 hours to their hometown. But it was such a wonderful day, and I am really thankful. Wally and I walked back to the Cathedral since my hotel was just around the corner as well as the train station.

Hier wartete dann noch eine Ueberraschung auf uns. Wir sahen nur einen Menschenauflauf zuerst, bis wir dann die Maennergruppe im Obergeschoss des Gaffel Brauhauses entdeckten. Wie sich herausstellte gab der Koelner Maennerchor Gruenguertelrosen ein spontanes Konzert (bei den Herren handelt es sich um Laiensaenger ohne Ausbildung) und es war einfach nur toll. Wir standen dann noch ca 30 Minuten und lauschten den Liedern.

Here we had a huge surprise: at first, we only noticed the large number of people standing in front of us until we notices that across the street, inside the Gaffel brewery, the men's choir "Gruenguertelrosen" gave a spontaneous concert. All members are rookies and have no formal education as singers which makes it even more fun. Wally and I stopped and listened to the songs for about 30 minutes

Am Mittwoch Morgen hiess es dann Abschied nehmen von Koeln, es ging mit dem Bus weiter nach Frankfurt. Den Bus fand ich super toll, zumal es eine Fussstuetze gab und man somit sehr bequem gesessen hat. Allerdings hab ich die Fahrt fast vollstaendig verschlafen, lach.

Wednesday morning, I had to say goodbye to Cologne. I booked a seat on a bus, and I have to say, it was very comfortable. So comfortable that I slept through most of the drive :-).

Angekommen am Frankfurt Haupfbahnhof, ging es erst zum Hotel in dem Vorort, wo Diana und Familie wohnen, schnell was essen und dann ging es zu Diana. Am Nachmittag ging es das Hofcafe einer Obstplantage in der Naehe, das Wetter war weiterhin nicht besonders toll.

When I arrived in Frankfurt, I took the train to the suburb where my dear friend Diana lives with her family. I dropped my luggage and grabbed a bite. Later I met with Diana and her son, and we visited the cafe at a nearby fruit orchard. Unfortunately, no good views due to the weather.

Am Abend bekam ich von Ihnen sogar einen Adventskalendar, das fand ich total lieb!

They even gave me a Christmas calendar, what a lovely gesture!

Am Donnerstag besuchte ich Claudia, die in einem wunderschoenen Weinbaugebiet wohnt, leider haben wir vergessen Fotos zu machen. Und abends ging es dann auf den Weihnachtsmarkt in Frankfurt, der unglaublich voll war und keinen Spass machte. Allerdings fand ich die Haeuser am Markt schoen bei Nacht.

Thursday, I visited Claudia who lives in a beautiful wine region but we completely forgot to take photos. In the evening, I visited the Christmas market in Frankfurt and was really disappointed. It was way too crowded which I can't stand. But I really liked the old houses by night which surround the market square.

Ich hatte das Glueck durch Zufall dem Kinderchor in einer nahegelegenen Kirche zuzuhoeren die Weihnachtslieder sangen

I also got lucky since a nearby church had a kids' choir that performed Christmas songs.

Ein Bummel durch den schoenen Ort in dem Diana wohnt, wir hatten auch in einem Cafe ein wunderbar leckeres Fruehstueck.

A nice stroll through the picturesque town Diana lives in, and we had a delicious breakfast in a cute coffee shop/bakery.

Diana ueberraschte mich mit Karten fuer den "Singing Christmas Tree", etwas was ich gar nicht kannte. Die Veranstaltung fand in einer Kirche start und der Chor ist wie in Weihnachtsbaum abgeordnet auf einer Hoehe von 7m. Und es war einfach nur toll.

Diana surprised me with tickets for the "Singing Christmas Tree" which I didn't know before. The performance happened in a church and it was fantastic!

Am Abend war dann noch der Weihnachtsmarkt bei Diana im Wohnort, der auch sehr schoen war. Was ich toll fand, dass es dort nur handgemachte Waren oertlicher Haendler gab.

In the evening, we visited the Christmas market where Diana lives, and I really liked that they only had handmade merchandise by local people.

Ich nahm mir eine Huelle fuer meinen ebook reader und einen Schluesselanhaenger mit, sowie eine der Kugellampen (funktioniert mit Teelicht).

Dann war es auch schon Sonntag und mein Zug zurueck nach Berlin fuhr ab, diesmal klappte alles reibungslos und es gab sogar etwas Schnee unterwegs.

On Sunday, I had to catch my train back to Germany and this time, it was a smooth ride, we even had some snow during the day.

Meine "Andenken" waren diese persoenliche Kissenhuelle von Wally genaeht und das tolle Taeschchen fuer die Handtasche von Sabine genaeht, ganz ganz lieben Dank!

I received a very personal cushion cover made by Wally and a very cute make-up bag sewn by Sabine. Thank you both, I will cherish both items.

Es war eine wunderbare Woche mit vielen lieben Menschen, und ich danke Euch allen dass Ihr Euch die Zeit genommen habt!
