road trip 04 - 06/2024: Mt. Lemmon Scenic Byway (AZ), day 15

Am Nachmittag erkundeten wir dann den Mt. Lemmon Scenic Byway, die einzige asphaltierte Straße, die zum Oberlauf des Mt. Lemmon und der Santa Catalina Range führt. Landschaftlich ist dies einer der schoensten Fahrten im Südosten Arizonas mit tollen Ausblicken auf ausgefallene Felslandschaften, Bergwäldern und tiefen Schluchten, die in weite Wüsten übergehen. Interessant ist, dass man auf der eher kurzen Strecke von 27 Meilen/ 43 Kilometer diverse vegetative Lebenszonen von der Wueste bis zu Hochwaeldern durchfaehrt. Hinter jeder Kurve ist die Natur anders, und das fanden wir wirklich faszinierend. Entlang der Strecke gibt es viele wunderbare Aussichtspunkte zum anhalten. Mount Lemmon Highway ist uebrigens nur der Umgangssprachliche Name, denn eigentlich wurde er zu Ehren von Generalpostmeister Frank Harris Hitchcock offiziell als General Hitchcock Highway bezeichnet und die Strasse wird jedes jedes Jahr von über 1 Million Besuchern befahren.

In the afternoon we explored the Mt. Lemmon Scenic Byway, the only paved road that leads to the upper reaches of Mt. Lemmon and the Santa Catalina Range. Scenically, this is one of the most beautiful drives in southeastern Arizona with great views of unusual rocky landscapes, mountain forests, and deep canyons that merge into vast deserts. What is interesting is that on the rather short route of 27 miles/43 kilometers, you pass through various vegetative life zones from the desert to high forests. Nature is different behind every bend, and we found that really fascinating. There are many wonderful viewpoints to stop along the route. By the way, Mount Lemmon Highway is just a colloquial name, because it was officially named the General Hitchcock Highway in honor of Postmaster General Frank Harris Hitchcock, and the road is traveled by over 1 million visitors every year.

Und dann ging es den gleichen Weg wieder zurueck, es war ein wirklich schoener Ausflug.

And then we drove back the same way, it was a really nice trip.

Zum Abendessen ging es wie fast immer zu einem Mexikaner, am Parkplatz waren eine Menge toller Skulpturen aufgestellt.

As almost always, we went to a Mexican restaurant for dinner and there were a lot of great sculptures set up in the parking lot.

road trip 04 - 06/2024: Saguaro NP East, Tucson & Catalina SP (AZ), day 13-14

An diesem Tag besuchten wir den Ostteil des Saguaro National Parkes. Auch hier gibt es wieder eine Strasse, der man fuer die verschiedenen Aussichtspunkte folgen kann: der Cactus Forest Scenic Loop Drive mit einer Gesamtlaenge von 8 Meilen/ 12,9 km.

On this day we visited the eastern part of Saguaro National Park. There is also a road you can follow for the various viewpoints: the Cactus Forest Scenic Loop Drive with a total length of 8 miles/12.9 km.

Anschliessend hat Andreas erstmal grob den Wuestensand vom Auto gewaschen.

Anschliessend fuhren wir noch in die Altstadt von Tucson, waren aber eher enttaeuscht. Wir stellen das immer wieder fest, dass die Innenstaedte einfach tot sind, oft sind es nur Buerogebaeude, Geschaefte sind schon lange geschlossen und wir finden es oft einfach wirklich langweilig.

Tucson ist nach Phoenix die zweitgrößte in Arizona. Tucson war bereits um 12.000 v. Chr. von Paläoindianern besiedelt und gehört zu den am längsten fortwährend besiedelten Orten der USA. Zwischen 600 und 1450 n. Chr. siedelte die Hohokam-Kultur in diesem Gebiet. Die Stadt selbst wurde 1775 mit dem Bau eines Presidios (Festung) durch die Spanier gegründet. Nach der Unabhängigkeit Mexikos von Spanien 1821 gehörte Tucson zu Mexiko. Mit dem Gadsden-Kauf fiel die Stadt 1853 an die Vereinigten Staaten.

We then drove to the old town of Tucson but were rather disappointed. We notice again and again that the inner cities are simply dead, they are often just office buildings, shops have been closed for a long time and we usually just find it really boring.

Tucson is the second largest city in Arizona after Phoenix. Tucson was already around 12,000 BC. Settled by Paleo-Indians in the 4th century BC, it is one of the longest continuously inhabited places in the United States. The Hohokam culture settled in this area between 600 and 1450 AD. The city itself was founded in 1775 with the construction of a presidio (fortress) by the Spanish. After Mexico's independence from Spain in 1821, Tucson became part of Mexico. With the Gadsden Purchase in 1853, the city fell to the United States.

This was, however, a very beautiful building complex: the Pima County Historic Courthouse.

 Tag 14/ day 14

Wir blieben den ganzen Tag im Catalina SP, in dem sich unser Stellplatz befand. Waehrend Andreas arbeitete, hatte ich Waeschetag und muss sagen, die eigene Waschmaschine ist Gold wert!

We stayed all day in the Catalina SP, where our parking space was located. While Andreas was working, I had laundry day and I have to say, my own washing machine is worth its weight in gold!

Da unsere Abwassertanks voll waren, hat Andreas das Abwasser dann mit dem "Honey wagon" zur Abwasserstation gefahren. Auch der Wagen war eine tolle Anschaffung, da wir somit nicht mit den ganzen Camper zum entleeren fahren muessen.

Since our wastewater tanks were full, Andreas then drove the wastewater to the wastewater station in the “honey wagon”. The wagon was also a great purchase because we didn't have to drive the entire camper to empty it.

Am spaeten Nachmittag machten wir noch eine Wanderung zu den Romero Ruinen, den Ueberbleibseln einer Ranch die sich mal hier auf diesem Gebiet befand.

In the late afternoon, we went on a hike to the Romero Ruins, the remains of a ranch that was once located in this area.

Irgendwo dahinten in den Baeumen ist der Campground.

Somewhere back in the trees is the campground.
