Maroon Bells, CO

Am Sonntag Morgen machten wir uns dann auf zu den Maroon Bells, Colorado's meistfotografierter Ort. Prinzipiell war es ein Reinfall, da der Sommer zu trocken war und der See vor den Bergen extremst klein war und somit die beruehmte Spiegelung so gut wie nicht vorhanden war. Genauso wurden inzwischen Absperrungen angebracht, so dass man gar nicht mehr direkt ans Ufer herankommt. 

Sunday Morning we drove up to the Maroon Bells, Colorado's most photographed location. Well, it wasn't exactly as anticipated and we could have skipped it. The summer was really dry, and so also the lake in front of the Bells was quite tiny which made it impossible to get the famous reflection. Also there is now a kind of a fence so one can't get as close to the lake shore as previously.

Da am Morgen noch alles im Schatten war, haben wir noch etwas Zeit im Camper mit einem ausgiebigen Fruehstueck verbracht und sind erst gegen 9.30 wieder zum See gegangen.

Since in the morning there was still a large amount of shade we went back to the camper and had an extended breakfast. Around 9.30 we went back to the lake.

Allerdings waren viele Aspen inzwischen gelb, und das hat ein wenig getroestet. Das Problem ist, rund um Aspen gibt es nur wenige (staatliche) Campgrounds und so muss man tatsaechlich 6 Monate vorher buchen, um einen Platz zu bekommen. Somit ist es natuerlich ein Gluecksspiel mit dem Wetter sowohl im Sommer als natuerlich auch zum Reisezeitpunkt.

At least a lot of Aspens have been golden which made up for the other disappointment. The problem with Aspen/Maroon Bells is that there are only a few (government) campgrounds and so one has to book 6 month in advance to get a spot. So it is kind of a gamble with the weather during summer and also at the time of travel.

Wir sind dann hoch zum Crater Lake gewandert, ahnten aber schon nicht Gutes.

Nun gut, nicht zu aendern, darum erstmal eine Staerkung.

So sieht es aus, wenn der Shuttle Bus seine Ladung entlaesst (von 8-17 Uhr kommt man nur mit einem Shuttle Bus auf das Gelaende).

Und dann standen wir irgendwann im Stau, was uns knapp 2 Stunden zusaetzlich einbrachte fuer den Weg nach Hause. GsD ist das eher selten.

And then we hit the traffic jam which gave us additional 2 hours to get home. Luckily this is pretty rare.

An dem Wochenende war auch unser 17. Hochzeitstag und wir entschieden uns fuer neue Ringe. Wir beiden fanden die normalen Eheringe eher unpraktisch und entschieden uns fuer Silikonringe von Qalo. Nun brauchen wir auch keine Angst mehr haben, wenn man irgendwo haengenbleibt beim wandern o.ae. :-).

That weekend was also our 17th wedding anniversary which we used as an excuse to get new wedding bands. We both found the regular ones annoying and so we got Qalo silicone rings. Now we don't have to fear any longer when we got caught on a branch while hiking etc.

Am 10.07. sind wir dann um 6.15 aufgestanden, da wir um 7.00 aufbrechen mussten. Das Ziel des Tages waren die Maroon Bells und ab um 8.00 kommt man bis 17.00 nur noch mit dem Shuttle Bus hinein. Wir sind gut durchgekommen und waren dann kurz nach 7.30 durch das Eingangstor gefahren und waren 7.45 Uhr am See. Es ist wichtig, frueh dort zu sein, da noft ur am fruehen Morgen das Wasser eine ruhige Oberflaeche hat. Maroon Bells ist eines der meist fotografiertesten Motiv in Colorado und besonders beliebt fuer Sonnenaufgaenge. Viele stellen sich dann schon um 4.30 an den See, um einen guten Platz zu haben. So verrueckt bin ich dann auch nicht :-). Aber auf die Maroon Bells habe ich mich schon das ganze Jahr gefreut und dank des tollen Wetters, war es fuer mich der eindrucksvollste Tag des Sommers.

On July 10th, we got ab at 6.15 am and left the campground at 7 am. It was very important to leave early since after 8 am one can enter the Maroon Bells area only by shuttle (until 5 pm). We arrived at the gate at 7.30 am, and were on the lake shore at 7.45 am. Maroon Bells is one of the most photographed motives of Colorado.A lot of photographers are already at 4.30 or so at the lake to get the best shot of the sunrise, I'm not sooo crazy :-). But I was looking forward to hike at the Maroon Bells for a long time, and since the weather was perfect it was the best day of summer for me.

Die Fotos sehen wahrscheinlich alle gleich aus *lach*, aber ich konnte mich nicht entscheiden :-)

Nachdem ich gefuehlte 1000 Fotos vom See mit den Bells dahinter gemacht habe, sind wir hoch zum Crater Lake gewandert. Einfacher Weg sind 3,2km mit etwas ueber 200m Hoehenunterschied. Der Weg fuehrt u.a. durch ein tolles Gebiet mit vielen Espen. Dadurch dass der Weg recht einfach zu bewaeltigen ist (wenn man an die Hoehe gewoehnt ist *lach*), sind natuerlich auch recht viele Menschen hier unterwegs. Aber wir hatten einige nette Gespraeche auf dem Weg mit anderen Besuchern.

After I took 1000 photos (at least it felt like that *lol*) of the lake and the Bells we hiked up to Crater Lake. One way is around 2 miles with a 600 ft elevation gain. The trail leads through an awesome patch of Aspens. Since the hike is on the easy side (as long one is used to the altitude) a lot of people are to be found on this trail. But we had some nice conversation with other people while hiking.

 

Man sieht auch viele Wanderer mit grossen Rucksaecken, die hier in der Wildnis dann campen ueber Nacht. Dafuer braucht man eine spezielle Genehmigung, die an einige Regen gebunden ist.

One can see quite a number of backpackers for back country hiking & camping, which requires a special permit.

Wir haben dann eine Essenspause eingelegt und einfach nur die Aussicht auf uns wirken lassen.

We took a snack break and just soaked in the beautiful views. 

 

 

Als wir 45min spaeter wieder am Crater Lake vorbei kamen war die Oberflaeche dann schon unruhig, da Wind aufgekommen ist. Von der tollen Spiegelung auf dem Hinweg ist nichts mehr zu sehen.

As we passed the lake again 45 mins later the surface wasn't smooth anymore. It became windy and so the mirror effect was gone.

Unten angekommen sind wir noch den Scenic Loop Trail entlang spaziert.

When we returned from Crater Lake we strolled along the Scenic Loop Trail.

 

Die Wolken zogen dann immer mehr zusammen und so beschlossen wir, uns auf den Weg nach Aspen zu machen. Ich kann gar nicht in Worte fassen, wie wunderschoen dieses Fleckchen Erde ist und es war auf jeden Fall nicht der letzte Besuch. Leider hatte ich versaeumt, rechtzeitig einen Stellplatz fuer September zu buchen (die sind 6 Monate im Voraus ausgebucht), aber naechstes Jahr denke ich dran. Die goldgelben Espen sind dann naemlich ein fantastischer Anblick mit den Bergen und dem See.

It became more and more cloudy and so we decided to head to Aspen. I can't put into words how i felt at this beautiful and very special place. We definitely will return, unfortunately I was to late to book a campsite for September (sites are booked 6 month in advance) so I have to wait until next year to see the golden Aspens in front of the mountains and surrounding the lake. Fall is magical here in Colorado, no matter where you go.
