GER: Leipzig (Sachsen)

Leipzig stand auch auf meiner Wunschliste zum anschauen, und so ging es im Juli als Tagesauflug in diese Stadt. Leipzig hat sich in den letzten Jahrzehnten sehr veraendert da sehr viele Bauwerke nach der Wende saniert und auch aufwaendig rekonstruiert wurden. Leipzig erhielt 1165 das Stadtrecht und entwickelte sich recht schnell zum regionalen Handelszentrum. Leipzig ist zudem ein historisches Zentrum des Buchdrucks und besitzt eine der aeltesten Universitaeten. Auch musikalisch hat Leipzig eine lange Tradition, u.a. begruendet auf Johann Sebastian Bach und Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy aber auch auf das Wirken des Gewandhausorchesters und des Thomanerchors. Besonders bekannt wurde Leipzig aber durch die Montagsdemonstrationen im Jahr 1989, die entscheidend zum Mauerfall beigetragen haben.

Leipzig was also on my wish list, so we also visited this city on a day trip in July. Leipzig has changed a lot in the last few decades, with many buildings being renovated and extensively reconstructed after the fall of the Wall. Leipzig received city rights in 1165 and quickly developed into a regional trading center. Leipzig is also a historical printing center and has one of the oldest universities. Leipzig also has a long musical tradition, based, among other things, on Johann Sebastian Bach and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and the work of the Gewandhaus Orchestra and the St. Thomas Choir. Leipzig became particularly famous for the Monday demonstrations in 1989, which played a decisive role in the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Next, we walked towards the market square.

In der Maedler Passage befindet sich das Restaurant "Auerbachs Keller" mit, dies existiert schon seit 1525 und wurde auch schon von Johann Wolfgang von Goethe besucht, der in seinem "Faust" sogar eine dort spielende Szene einfuegte. Als Erinnerung findet man passende Skupturen neben dem Eingang, einmal "Mephisto und Faust" sowie "Studenten von Mephisto verzaubert".

The restaurant "Auerbachs Cellar" is located in the Maedler Passage, it has existed since 1525 and was also visited by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who even included a scene set there in his "Faust". As a reminder, you can find matching sculptures next to the entrance, one of which is "Mephistopheles and Faust" and "Students Enchanted by Mephistopheles".

In der Naehe des Marktes findet man die "Milchbar Pinguin", die 1964 als Eisdiele mit 4 Eissorten eroeffnet wurde und heute trotz Wende immer noch besteht.

Near the market, you will find the "milk bar Pinguin", which was opened in 1964 as an ice cream parlor with 4 flavors of ice cream and is still in existence today despite the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Die bekannte Nikolaikirche (Baubeginn 1165) von welcher im Jahr 1989 die ausgehenden Montagsdemonstrationen das Ende der DDR mit eingeleitet haben. Die Montagsdemonstrationen in Leipzig fanden unter der Losung „Keine Gewalt“ statt. Schon 1539 predigte Luther hier und leitete somit die Reformation in Leipzig ein, und auch Johann Sebastian Bach fuehrte hier zahlreiche Kantaten und Oratorien auf.

The well-known Nikolaikirche (construction started in 1165) from which the outgoing Monday demonstrations initiated the end of the GDR in 1989. The Monday demonstrations in Leipzig took place under the slogan “No violence”. Luther preached here as early as 1539, initiating the Reformation in Leipzig, and Johann Sebastian Bach also performed numerous cantatas and oratorios here.

Als naechstes erreichten wir ein weiteres bekanntes Bauwerk: die Thomaskirche. Die Grundmauern stammen aus 1160 und der beruehmte Thomanerchor wurde 1212 gegruendet. Auch hier predigte Martin Luther im Jahr 1539. In dieser Kirche wurden 11 Kinder von Johann Sebastian Bach getauft und heute findet man hier auch seine Grabstaette. 

Next, we reached another well-known building: the Thomaskirche. The foundation walls date from 1160 and the famous St. Thomas choir was founded in 1212. Martin Luther also preached here in 1539. 11 of Johann Sebastian Bach's children were baptized in this church and today his grave can also be found here.

An vielen Ecken findet man Infotafeln zur Geschichte der verschiedenen Orte.

In many places, you can find information boards about the history of the various locations all over the city.

Ein unbedingtes Muss meinerseits: Die Universitaetsbibliothek Albertina, eine der aeltesten Bibliotheken Deutschlands (Einweihung 1891).

An absolute must for me: The Albertina University Library, one of the oldest libraries in Germany (inaugurated in 1891).

Anschliessend ging es wieder Richtung Marktplatz.

Then we went back to the market square.

Am Naschmarkt findet man die Alte Boerse, eroeffnet 1687. Hierbei handelt es sich um  Leipzigs ältestes Versammlungsgebäude der Kaufmannschaft und das älteste Barockbauwerk der Stadt.

At the "Naschmarkt", one can find the Old Trading Exchange which was opened in 1687. It is Leipzig's oldest merchant meeting building and the city's oldest baroque building.

Und natuerlich auch ein Muss: das Voelkerschlachtdenkmal welches in Erinnerung an die Völkerschlacht von 1813 und den damit verbundenen Rueckzug Napoleons aus Deutschland im Jahr 1913 eingeweiht wurde.

And of course also a must: the Battle of the Nations Monument, which was inaugurated in memory of the Battle of the Nations in 1813 and the associated withdrawal of Napoleon from Germany in 1913.

Das Denkmal ist sowohl von aussen als auch innen einfach kolossal und sehr beeindruckend.

The monument is simply colossal and very impressive both from the outside and inside.

Und vor dem verlassen der Stadt noch schnell das alte Messezeichen als Foto mitgenommen. Das doppelte M war das Symbol der Mustermesse in Leipzig und wurde als überdimensionales Eingangstor auf dem Messegelände genutzt.

And before leaving the city, I quickly took the old trade fair sign with me as a photo. The double M was the symbol of the "Mustermesse" (English: "sample fair") in Leipzig and was used as an oversized entrance gate to the exhibition grounds.

Ein wunderbarer aber auch wieder viel zu kurzer Besuch, es hat sich gelohnt.

A wonderful but again much too short visit, but soooooo worth it.
