GER: Greetsiel

 Ein anderer Ort, den wir auch unbedingt sehen wollten, war Greetsiel. Die Geschichte Greetsiels geht bis Ende des 13. Jahrhunderts zurueck. "Greetsiel" entstand aus der Zusammensetzung der Worte „gred“ (angeschwemmtes Land) und "Siel" (Deichschleuse mit Abzugs-, Entwässerungsgraben zum Durchlassen oder Abfließen des Binnenwassers) und bedeutet somit soviel wie „Siel am Neuland“. In Greetsiel laden sowohl der Hafen als auch der alte Ortskern zum bummeln ein - wenn man damit leben kann dass auch in der Nachsaison noch viele Besucher dort unterwegs sind.

Another place we really wanted to see was Greetsiel. The history of Greetsiel goes back to the end of the 13th century. "Greetsiel" was created from the combination of the words "gred" (alluvial land) and "Siel" (dyke lock with a drainage ditch for letting inland water through or draining away) and therefore means something like "Siel am Neuland". In Greetsiel, both the harbor and the old town center are ideal for strolling - if you can live with the fact that there are still a lot of visitors there even in the off-season.

Wir spazierten dann entlang des Sielzuflusses.

We then walked along the tributary of the Siel.

Anschliessend schauten wir uns den historischen Ortskern an. Das Cirksena-Steinhaus istdas älteste erhaltene nicht-kirchliche in Greetsiel. Es stammt hauptsaechlich vom Ende des 16. Jahrhunderts,  Teile sind jedoch aus der Frühzeit Greetsiels um 1370.

We then walked around the historic town center. The Cirksena stone house is the oldest preserved secular building in Greetsiel. It mainly dates from the end of the 16th century, but parts are from Greetsiel's early days around 1370.

Die evangelisch-reformierte Kirche wurde zwischen 1380 und 1410 als Eigenkirche des Häuptlings Haro Edzardsna errichtet. Im Inneren findet man seit 1852 eine leicht gewölbte Holzdecke, welche die vorhergehende Flachdecke ersetzte und die Kanzel stammt aus dem Jahr 1669. Der Glockenturm steht einzeln daneben. 

The Evangelical Reformed church was built between 1380 and 1410 as the personal church of the chief Haro Edzardsna. Inside, there has been a slightly arched wooden ceiling since 1852, which replaced the previous flat ceiling, and the pulpit dates from 1669. The bell tower stands alone next to it.

Nun spazierten wir noch einmal an der anderen Seite des Sielzuflusses entlang.

Now we walked again along the other side of the Siel tributary.

Wir liefen auch zu den Zwillingsmühlen, diese stammen aus den Jahren 1856 (grüne Mühle, erstes Foto) und 1706 (rote Mühle, 2. Foto).

We also walked to the twin mills, which date from 1856 (green mill, first photo) and 1706 (red mill, 2nd photo).

Anschliessend verliessen wir Greetsiel und fuhren zum Leuchtturm nach Pilsum, inzwischen war es sehr sturmisch. Beim Pilsumer Leuchtturm handelt es sich um ein eisernes Bauwerk aus dem 19. Jahrhundert mit einer Höhe von 13 Metern, die Fundamente sind in den Deich hinein gebaut. Der Leuchtturm mit seinem rot-gelb gestreiften Anstrich ist sowohl aus der Werbung der nordwestdeutschen Biermarke "Jever" als auch durch den Film "Otto – Der Außerfriesische" bekannt.

We then left Greetsiel and drove to the lighthouse in Pilsum, by now it was very stormy. The Pilsum lighthouse is an iron structure from the 19th century with a height of 13 meters, the foundations are built into the dike. The lighthouse with its red and yellow striped paint is known both from advertising for the northwest German beer brand “Jever” and from the film “Otto – Der Ausserfriesische”.

Und zum Abschluss noch der Leuchtturm in Campen, inzwischen mit Nieselregen zusaetzlich zum starken Wind. Der Leuchtturm in Campen ist der zweithöchste Leuchtturm in Deutschland und gehört zu den höchsten Leuchttürmen der Welt. Mit seiner Hoehe von 65,3 Metern ist er zudem  der höchste Leuchtturm auf dem deutschen Festland und das Leuchtfeuer hat eine Reichweite von ca. 55 Kilometern. Der Leuchtturm in Campen wurde am 1. Oktober 1891 in Betrieb genommen. Gebaut wurde er als freistehender Stahlfachwerkturm mit dreieckigem Querschnitt und einem Treppenrohr in der Mitte, er hat eine Laternenkammer und zwei Galerien. Besucher der Galerien muessen die Treppen hochsteigen. 

And finally the lighthouse in Campen, now with drizzle in addition to the strong wind. The lighthouse in Campen is the second-highest lighthouse in Germany and one of the highest lighthouses in the world. With its height of 65.3 meters, it is also the highest lighthouse on the German mainland and the beacon has a range of approximately 55 kilometers. The lighthouse in Campen was put into operation on October 1, 1891. It was built as a free-standing steel truss tower with a triangular cross-section and a stairwell in the middle; it has a lantern chamber and two galleries. Visitors to the galleries must climb the stairs.

Als wir von hier losfahren wollten, mussten wir feststellen, dass die Servolenkung unseres Autos den Geist aufgegeben hat. Andreas hatte GsD genug Muskelkraft und wir steuerten auf dem Rueckweg eine Ford-Werkstatt an. Dort erklaerte man uns, dass das typisch sei fuer um die 100.000 Kilometer Laufleistung. Somit entschieden wir uns, am uebernaechsten Tag nach Hause zu fahren, 2 Tage frueher als geplant damit es in Berlin in die Werkstatt kann.

When we wanted to drive away from here, we discovered that our car's power steering had stopped working. Andreas had enough muscle strength and we headed to a Ford workshop on the way back. There, they explained to us that this was typical for around 100,000 kilometers of mileage. So we decided to go home the day after next, 2 days earlier than planned so that we could go to the workshop in Berlin.
