Teslin Lake, YT - Muncho Lake, BC (road trip day 50)

Es hatte die ganze Nacht durchgeregnet und selbst um 10 Uhr hatten wir gerade mal 6.5C/ 44F Aussentemperatur. Unser Weg fuehrte uns wieder durch Watson Lake, wo Andreas im Besucherzentrum das WiFi nutzte, da er etwas fuer die Arbeit zu erledigen hatte. Dominik hingegen nutzte auch noch einmal die Chance, sich in der Bibliothek guenstig Literatur zu besorgen fuer die weitere Fahrt. Ebenso wollten wir im Postamt noch 5 Briefmarken fuer Post ins Ausland kaufen, mehr als 3 gab es aber nicht, oder wir haetten bis nachmittags warten muessen. So dringend war es dann auch nicht.

It rained the entire night, and at 10 am we had chilly 44F/ 6.5C outside. We had to drive through Watson Lake again, where Andreas took advantage of the free wifi at the visitor information since had to do some work. Dominik visited the local library to hunt for some cheap books for the next days. Also we wanted to purchase 5 international stamps at the post office but could only get 3, otherwise we would have needed to wait until afternoon; well, it wasn't that urgent ...

Das Besucherzentrum hat auch eine kleine, sehr informative Ausstellung zur Errichtung des Alaska Highways.

Inside the visitor information one can find a small but very informative exhibition about the construction of the Alaska Highway.

Watson Lake

Nachdem wir unseren Tank noch einmal aufgefuellt haben, ging es dann wieder weiter. Es blieb grau und regnerisch.

After we filled up our diesel, we continued our drive. It stayed grey and rainy also for the rest of the day.

Wir kreuzten nun erstmal wieder nach BC./ We crossed into BC.

Irgendwo muss ein Airstream Treffen stattgefunden haben, wir sahen auf dem Weg um die 30 Airstream Trailer.

Somewhere must have been an Airstream festival, we noticed about 30 Airstream trailer that day.

Und es war aufgrund des Wetters auch Schwarzbaer-Tag, wir sahen rund ein Dutzend Schwarzbaeren neben dem Highway waehrend unserer Fahrt.

It also must have been black bear day, due to the weather we noticed about a dozen black bears along our route that day.

Wir wollten gerade den Hund aus dem Auto lassen, um ein Mittagspaeuschen einzulegen, als es neben uns auf einmal raschelte. Der Baer kam aus dem Gestruepp und wir stiegen dann leise wieder ins Auto und fuhren weiter.

We were just about to take Pirate out of the car for doing a lunch break when we heard some noise in the brushes beside our car. As soon as we noticed the bear, we quietly entered the car again and drove away.

Wir hielten dann an dem grossen Pullout der Historic Mile 585, wo man den Grenzstein fuer Yukon/BC sehen kann. Hier gab es dann was zu essen und diesmal wurden wir nur von einem Bison auf der gegenueberliegenden Strassenseite beobachtet.

We stopped at the large pullout for Historic Mile marker 585 whre one can find the border marker for BC/Yukon. Here we also ate our lunch, this time only watched by a bison on the other side of the road.

Etwas spater hielten wir dann an der Historic Mile 570, die sich Allen's Lookout nennt. Der Gedenkstein erinnert an die Landvermesser fuer den Alaska Highway. Die Legende besagt aber, dass durch den fantastischen Blick von hier auf den Liard River, diese Stelle vor allem von Piraten genutzt wurde, um Schiffe zu ueberfallen.

Later we stopped at the historic mile marker 570, the so called Allan's Lookout. The cairn is a memorial for the land surveyors of the Alaska Highway. Legend has it that due to the stunning view of the Liard River, pirates used this spot to scout boats they could plunder.

Und nun kamen wir ins Bisongebiet. Wir sahen wirklich hunderte Bison entlang des Highways, mal in Gruppen, mal alleine. Was fuer ein atemberaubender Anblick!

Now we entered the bison area, we really noticed hundreds of bison along the highway; sometimes in herds, sometimes as single animal. That was breathtaking!

Cranberry Rapids

Wir hatten auf Glueck gehofft, noch einen freien Platz auf dem Liard Hot Springs campground zu ergattern. Das war aber mehr als naiv, da wir erst am spaeten Nachmittag ankamen, und die Plaetze idR noch am vormittag weg sind (ist schliesslich nun Hauptsaison). Man kann fuer den gleichen Preis auch auf dem Parkplatz direkt am Highway uebernachten, und dann die Hot Springs gegen zzgl Eintrittspreis nutzen, das fanden wir dann doch etwas dreist und haben dankend verzichtet. Wir fuhren dann noch ein paar Kilometer weiter bis zum Muncho Lake viewpoint.

We hoped to find a campsite at Liard Hot Springs Territorial Park CG but had no luck. Since it is main season usually all spots are taken in the late morning. One could camp also at the overflow parking lot across the highway for the same fee plus entrance fee for the Hot Springs (which would be included in the fees for the regular campground), but that we found not appealing (not to say brazen). So we skipped the Hot Springs and drove further to Muncho Lake.

Am Muncho Lake viewpoint fanden wir einen schoenen boondocking spot, aber dort standen schon 2 Camper. Wir gingen hin und fragten hoeflich, ob es stoeren wuerde, wenn wir uns dazustellen. Sie hatten nichts dagegen, und winkten uns sogar dichter ran als wir gerade parken wollten. Wir haben uns dann noch einige Zeit mit den Kanadiern aus Victoria unterhalten, bevor es dann wieder anfing zu regnen. 

At Muncho Lake viewpoint we noticed a quite nice boondocking spot but that was already taken by two RVs. We asked politely if they would object when we would park here for the night, too. They welcomed us, and even told us to get closer when we were about to park our pick up. We had a very nice chat for a longer time with the two Canadian couples from Victoria, until it started to rain again.

Nicht der schlechteste Platz zum uebernachten :-).

Not the worst place to overnight, right? :-)
