GER: Leer & Weener (Ostfriesland/ East Frisia)

 Wir verbrachten eine Woche in Berlin und schon ging es zum letzten gemeinsamen Urlaub zu dritt in 2023. Wir hatten ein Ferienhaus in Ostfriesland (Nessmersiel) gebucht, passend zum Ende der Sommerferien in Deutschland und somit nun auch bezahlbar. Wir hatten ja im Sommer immer mal nach Unterkuenften an Nord- und Ostsee geschaut, aber Wahnsinn was das inzwischen kostet.

Dominik chauffierte uns am 9.9. sicher zum Ziel und abends ging es dann noch kurz ans Wasser am Hafen von Nessmersiel, und wir hatten sogar Flut :-). Ich hab mich sehr auf diesen Urlaub gefreut, da es schon lange auf unserer Reisewunschliste stand.

We spent a week in Berlin and were off to our last holiday together as a threesome in 2023. We had booked a holiday home in East Frisia (Nessmersiel), to coincide with the end of the summer holidays in Germany, and therefore now affordable. In the summer we always looked for accommodation on the North and Baltic Seas, but it's crazy how much it costs now.

Dominik chauffeured us on September 9th. We reached our destination safely and in the evening we went briefly to the water at the harbor in Nessmersiel, and we even had high tide :-). I was really looking forward to this vacation as it had been on our travel wish list for a long time. 

East Frisia or East Friesland (German: Ostfriesland) is a historical region in the northwest of Lower Saxony, Germany, and is primarily located on the western half of the East Frisian peninsula, to the east of West Frisia and to the west of Landkreis Friesland.

Wir stellten schnell fest, Strand mit Hund ist hier nicht wirklich moeglich, ausser an einem winzigen Stueck Hundestrand (gepflastert), aber nicht am Strand im Sand langlaufen wie in DK. Somit ging es in einen Hundepark zum austoben nach dem Tag.

We quickly realized that it's not really possible to go to the beach with a dog here, except for a tiny piece of dog beach (paved), but not walking on the sand on the beach like in DK. So we went to a dog park to let off steam after the day.

Der naechste Tag begann mit dem fuer die Kueste typischen Nebel.

The next day began with the fog typical of the coast.

Nach dem Fruehstueck machten wir uns auf um die Gegend zu erkunden.

After breakfast, we set out to explore the area.

Am spaeten Vormittag erreichten wir dann die Stadt Leer, die am Fluss Leda, einem  Nebenfluss der Ems, liegt. Leer war bereits eine Siedlung lange bevor es zum ersten Mal in schriftlichen Dokumenten erwähnt wurde, es finden sich viele Spuren früher Siedlungen in der Gegend, darunter auch grobe Feuersteinwerkzeuge, die auf etwa 3200 v. Chr. datiert werden.

Einige beruehmte Leute aus dieser Stadt sind:

Focko Ukena (1370–1436), ostfriesischer Häuptling

Ubbo Emmius (1547–1625), Theologe und Historiker an der Universität Groningen

Ernst Reuter (1889–1953), Politiker und Kommunalwissenschaftler, Bürgermeister von West-Berlin 1948–1953

Karl Dall (1941–2020), Moderator, Sänger und Komiker

Wir wollten es aber vorrangig sehen, da u.a. hier die Kriminalfilmreihe des ZDF "Friesland"gedreht wird, die wir sehr gerne schauen. (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friesland_(Fernsehreihe))

Leer ist eine superschoene kleine Stadt und wir hatten diverse nette Gespraeche mit anderen Leuten beim Mittagessen.

Leer is located on the Leda River, a tributary of the Ems. Leer was already a settlement long before it was first mentioned in written documents; there are many traces of early settlements in the area, including crude flint tools dating back to around 3200 BC. 

Some famous people from this city are:

Focko Ukena (1370–1436), East Frisian chief

Ubbo Emmius (1547–1625), theologian and historian at the University of Groningen

Ernst Reuter (1889–1953), politician and local scientist, mayor of West Berlin 1948–1953

Karl Dall (1941–2020), presenter, singer and comedian

But we wanted to see it as a priority because, among other things, the ZDF crime film series “Friesland” is filmed here, which we really enjoy watching.

Leer is a super nice little town and we had several nice conversations with other people over lunch.

Alles ist wunderbar zu Fuss und per Fahrrad zu erreichen.

Everything can be easily reached on foot or by bike.

Das tolle Haus der Tee-Firma Buenting, da sind wir unter der Woche noch einmal gewesen um uns einzudecken.

Tea company "Buenting" owns a beautiful store in Leer, since it was Sunday we had to return during the week to stock up on tea and mugs.

Es fand gerade ein Kayak-Wettbewerb statt und wir schauten einige Zeit zu.

There was a kayak competition taking place, and we watched for quite some time.

Anschliessend fuhren wir noch nach Weener, hier befindet sich ein weiterer Drehort (ein Restaurant in den Friesland-Krimis).

We then drove to Weener, where another filming location (a restaurant in the Friesland crime series) exists.

Eine Skulptur erinnert hier an die "Torffrauen", die beim entladen der Schiffe/ beladen der Pferdekutschen mit Torf eingesetzt wurden, eine sehr schwere koerperliche Arbeit.

A sculpture here commemorates the "peat women" who were used to unload the ships/ load the horse-drawn carriages with peat, a very demanding physical job.

Wir setzten uns dann noch eine Weile in den Hafen 55, genossen das Wetter, Live-Musik und natuerlich den Kuchen!

We then sat in Hafen 55 for a while, enjoying the weather, live music, and of course the cake!

Ich musste auf dem Rueckweg unbedingt noch ein Foto von einem Schild machen, dass man hier oben ganz haeufig findet. Am Morgen haben wir auch die Boßel-Spieler entlang der Strassen bewundern duerfen.

On the way back I definitely had to take a photo of a sign you often find here. In the morning we could also admire the Boßel players along the streets. (Boßeln is a ballgame, a form of road bowling in which a predetermined distance of several kilometers must be covered with a minimum number of throws )
