DK: Viborg

Wir besuchten auch die Stadt Viborg, deren Spuren man bis ins 9. Jahrhundert zurueckverfolgen kann aufgrund von Überresten mehreren Bauernhöfe aus der Wikingerzeit. Wir begannen unseren Rundgang im Domviertel, leider hat das Wetter nicht wirklich koopoeriert. 

We also visited the city of Viborg, whose traces can be traced back to the 9th century due to the remains of several farms from the Viking Age. We started our tour in the cathedral district, but unfortunately, the weather didn't cooperate.

Das alte Rathaus wurde 1728 erbaut, heute befindet sich im Inneren ein Kunstmuseum (Skovgaard Museet).

The old town hall was built in 1728 and today there is an art museum (Skovgaard Museet) inside.

Der Dom zu Viborg oder auch Frauenkirche von Viborg (dänisch: Vor Frue Kirke). Der heute zu sehende Bau stammt von 1864-1876, nachdem die Ueberbleibsel des aus dem 12. Jarhhundert stammenden Baus nach mehreren Braenden 1863 abgerissen wurden.

Viborg Cathedral or Church of Our Lady (Danish: Vor Frue Kirke). The building you can see today dates from 1864-1876 after the remains of the 12th-century building were demolished in 1863 following several fires.

Gegenueber vom Dom befindet sich der ”Latinerhaven” (Lateinischer Garten), der älteste Garten Viborgs. Dieser stammt aus dem Jahr 1726 und gehoerte zur Dienstwohnung des Direktors der Viborger Lateinschule.

Opposite the cathedral is the “Latinerhaven” (Latin Garden), the oldest garden in Viborg. This dates back to 1726 and was part of the official residence of the director of the Viborg Latin School.

Das Dominikanerkloster Viborg (Sortebrødrekloster) war im Mittelalter ein wichtiges Dominikanerkloster in Viborg, Dänemark. Der erste Kirchenbau wurde gegen Ende des 13. Jahrhunderts aus rotem Backstein im gotischen Stil fertiggestellt, aber 2 grosse Feuer zerstoerten das Gebaeude soweit, dass ein neues Gebaeude 1728 errichtet wurde. Dieses wurde 1876 restauriert und 1912-1917 wurde die Kirche nochmals erweitert.

The Dominican Monastery of Viborg (Sortebrødrekloster) was an important Dominican monastery in Viborg, Denmark in the Middle Ages. The first church building was completed at the end of the 13th century in red brick in the Gothic style, but 2 large fires destroyed the building to the point that a new building was built in 1728. This was restored in 1876 and the church was expanded again from 1912 to 1917.

Anschliessend bummelten wir etwas durch die Gassen. 

Next, we strolled through the streets for a bit.

Kurzzeitig kam die Sonne und so gab es diese schoene Seitenansicht vom Dom.

The sun appeared briefly and there was this beautiful side view of the cathedral.

Unser letzter Blick fiel auf "Stænderpladsen", hier wurden im Laufe der Jahre mindestens 37 dänische Könige gekrönt. Auffallend ist auch die Skulptur 'Göttin der Gerechtigkeit', sie zeigt die Göttin mit einer Schreibfeder in der einen Hand und einer Pergamentrolle in der anderen - ein Symbol für Viborg als alten Gerichtsplatz. 

Our last look was at "Stænderpladsen", where at least 37 Danish kings have been crowned over the years. The sculpture 'Goddess of Justice' is also striking; it shows the goddess with a quill in one hand and a scroll of parchment in the other - a symbol of Viborg as an ancient place of justice.

Wenn man schon in Viborg ist, sollte man auch Elle besuchen, ein Troll erschaffen von Thomas Danbo. Von ihm gibt es auch 2 Trolle in Colorado. Elle ist ca 6m hoch und aus Holz erbaut. Der Stein in ihrer Hand wiegt 3 Tonnen, Elle ist somit sehr stark, und um sie herum findet man 100 Steine, die sie gegen Menschen schuetzen sollen.

While you're in Viborg, you should also visit Elle, a troll created by Thomas Danbo. There are also 2 trolls of his in Colorado. Elle is about 6m high and made of wood. The stone in her hand weighs 3 tons, making Elle very strong, and 100 stones around her are supposed to protect her against people.

Elles Helle

Once there was a fairy mound, so young and beautiful and sweet

Once there was a fairy dancing when the sun was red

Once there were flowers, beech trees, and the blacksmith dressed in gold

Once the earth was full of worms, and the mole dug the soil.

Then came a giant monster, and it took a bite of the hill

So the fairy girl screamed and ran away across the field

Many long years passed, and the lace turned brown

And the fairy girl returned home to the hill as a woman

And with her, in a sack, she carried a hundred stones on her back

And now she has placed them across the field as a defense that shields the hill

And behind them, Elle now resides in a hideaway from the monster

That tries to enter and devour the hill filled with flowers.

Ein weiterer sehenswerter Ort in der Umgebung ist "De fem Halder", die fünf Halden. Dazu gehoert Hald Hovedgaard welche sich am Hald See in der Nähe von Viborg befindet. Das Herrenhaus wurde 1787 als letztes der Fünf Halden errichtet und man findet hier auch die Ruine des Hald Slot, der 1528 von Bishof Jören Friis gebaut wurde (2000 unterseeische Pfosten im Kranz um die Hald Ruine zeugen von einer älteren Anlage).

Another place worth seeing in the area is “De fem Halder”, the five dumps. This includes Hald Hovedgaard which is located on Hald Lake near Viborg. The manor house was built in 1787 as the last of the Five Halds and you can also find the ruins of the Hald Slot, which was built in 1528 by Bishop Jören Friis (2000 submarine posts in the ring around the Hald ruins testify to an older facility).

Unser letzter Stop war am Hjarbaek Havn, einem kleinen Hafen in welchem man viele historische Holzjollen findet. Klein aber fein!

Our last stop was at Hjarbaek Havn, a small harbor where you can find many historic wooden dinghies. Small but nice!
