road trip 04 - 05/2026: Canyon de Chelly National Monument, AZ (day 17)

 Am Samstag fuhren wir zum Canyon de Chelly National Monument, das wir ebenfalls schon länger auf unserer Wunschliste hatten.

Der Canyon de Chelly befindet sich vollständig im Besitz des Navajo Tribal Trust der Navajo Nation. Es ist die einzige vom National Park Service verwaltete Stätte, die auf diese Weise in Privatbesitz ist und gemeinschaftlich verwaltet wird. Derzeit leben etwa 40 Navajo-Familien im Park und betreiben dort weiterhin Landwirtschaft. Der Zugang zum Talboden ist eingeschränkt; Besucher dürfen sich in den Canyons nur in Begleitung eines Parkrangers oder eines autorisierten Navajo-Guides bewegen.Die einzige Ausnahme von dieser Regel ist der White House Ruin Trail, auf dem man von der Kante der Schlucht hinunter auf den Boden wandern und dort die Überreste einer Siedlung direkt ansehen kann.

Der Park kann einfach mit dem Auto besichtigt werden, allerdings auf zwei verschiedenen Routen: dem Nord-Rim und dem Süd-Rim; an beiden gibt es verschiedenste Aussichtspunkte.

Wir kamen mittags an und starteten mit dem Süd-Rim, da es hier mehr Haltepunkte gibt.

On Saturday, we drove to Canyon de Chelly National Monument, a place that had long been on our wish list.

Canyon de Chelly is owned entirely by the Navajo Nation’s Navajo Tribal Trust. It is the only site managed by the National Park Service that is privately owned and jointly managed in this way. Currently, about 40 Navajo families live within the park and continue to farm the land there. Access to the canyon floor is restricted; visitors may only explore the canyons when accompanied by a park ranger or an authorized Navajo guide. The only exception to this rule is the White House Ruin Trail, which allows you to hike from the canyon rim down to the floor and view the remains of a settlement up close.

The park can easily be toured by car, though there are two separate routes—the North Rim and the South Rim—each offering a variety of viewpoints.

We arrived at midday and started with the South Rim, as it has more stops along the way.

Canyon de Chelly ist berühmt für den Spider Rock, eine Sandsteinnadel, die sich  230 Meter vom Talboden erhebt. Spider Rock ist vom South Rim Drive aus zu sehen. Er diente bereits als Schauplatz für eine Reihe von Fernsehwerbespots. Ich hab mich wie ein kleines Kind gefreut, als ich diese Formation gesehen hab.

Canyon de Chelly is famous for Spider Rock, a sandstone spire that rises 230 meters from the canyon floor. Spider Rock can be seen from South Rim Drive. It has served as the setting for several television commercials. I was as excited as a little kid when I saw this formation.

Von hier aus ging es dann den ganzen Weg zurück zum Eingang, um zum North Rim zu gelangen. Dieser hat weniger Aussichtspunkte, ist aber genauso interessant.

From there, we headed all the way back to the entrance to get to the North Rim. It has fewer viewpoints but is just as interesting.

Der Besuch dort war superinteressant, und wir haben auch einige Navajo-Touren am Fuß der Schlucht gesehen.

The visit there was fascinating, and we also saw some Navajo tours at the bottom of the canyon.

road trip 04 - 05/2026: Page, AZ (day 16)

 Am Freitag Nachmittag ging es dann zu unserem nächsten Urlaubsort: Page, AZ. Wir sind 2015 bereits dort durchgefahren, aber nun haben wir hier einen längeren Aufenthalt. Der hier liegende Lake Powell mit der umliegenden Glen Canyon Recreation Area zieht allein jährlich schon 3 Millionen Besucher an, und dabei sind andere Sehenswürdigkeiten wie Horseshoe Bend und Antelope Canyon noch gar nicht erwähnt. Page ist umgeben vom riesigen Reservatsgebiet der Navajos und die ganze Landschaft war zumindest für uns einfach wahnsinnig toll. Beeindruckend sind auch der Glen-Canyon-Damm, den man hier findet, und der Colorado River. 

On Friday afternoon, we headed to our next vacation destination: Page, Arizona. We had driven through the area back in 2015, but this time we were staying for a longer visit. Lake Powell and the surrounding Glen Canyon Recreation Area alone attract three million visitors annually—and that is without even mentioning other attractions like Horseshoe Bend and Antelope Canyon. Page is surrounded by the vast Navajo reservation, and the entire landscape was—to us, at least—absolutely stunning. The Glen Canyon Dam and the Colorado River, both located here, are also impressive sights.

Später sieht man links und rechts des Highways Reservatsland. Das finden wir auch nach vielen Jahren, in denen wir schon unterwegs sind, immer noch erschreckend, weil es absolut ärmlich aussieht. Viele Grundstücke sind mit massenhaft ausrangierten Autos, alten Mobilehomes usw. vollgemüllt.

Further along, you see reservation land on both sides of the highway. Even after years of traveling, we still find this shocking, as it looks utterly impoverished. Many properties are littered with heaps of junk—discarded cars, old mobile homes, and the like.

Aber die Landschaft ist natürlich grandios.

But the landscape is magnificent nonetheless.

Andreas hat dann schon beim Parken gemerkt, dass ich Hummeln im Hintern hatte, und so sind wir gleich nochmal losgefahren. Zwischen Campingplatz und Einfahrt zur Glen Canyon NRA gibt es viele Aussichtspunkte auf Lake Powell und so hielten wir dort erstmal an.

Andreas noticed while we were parking that I was raring to go, so we set off again right away. There are many viewpoints overlooking Lake Powell between the campsite and the entrance to the Glen Canyon NRA, so we stopped there first.

Lake Powell hat in den letzten Jahren einen enormen Wasserverlust erlitten, da immer weniger Wasser durch Schneeschmelze etc. in den Colorado River gelangt. In diesem Jahr hatte Lake Powell gerade mal noch knapp 23 % des Maximalstands, und das sieht man deutlich. So einige angebotene Touren, die man früher hier machen konnte (z.B. Bootstour zur Navajo Bridge), sind inzwischen von der Liste der Anbieter verschwunden, weil es nicht mehr genügend Wasser gibt.

Lake Powell has suffered massive water loss in recent years as dwindling inflows—from snowmelt and other sources—reach the Colorado River. This year, the lake was at just under 23% of its maximum capacity, and the impact is clearly visible. A number of tours previously available here (such as the boat trip to Navajo Bridge) have since been dropped from operators' lists because there is no longer enough water.

Über die Brücke am Damm kann man entspannt drüberlaufen, was wir auch taten. Dabei kann man in den Canyon am Colorado River blicken.

You can take a leisurely walk across the bridge at the dam—which is exactly what we did—and look down into the canyon of the Colorado River.

Wir waren noch schnell bei Walmart und Andreas bekam zwei ärmellose T-Shirts für den Campingplatz, um die Oberarme farblich angleichen zu können :-).

We made a quick stop at Walmart, and Andreas got two sleeveless T-shirts for the campsite so he could even out the tan on his upper arms :-).

Unser Stellplatz ist wirklich traumhaft, was auch daran liegt, dass der B-Loop, der vor uns lag, geschlossen war (ich glaube, dort wurde an den Wasserleitungen gearbeitet). Es war allgemein aber angenehm leer und die einzelnen Stellplätze waren dazu auch mit großen Abständen zueinander.

Our campsite is truly fantastic—partly because "Loop B," located just in front of us, was closed (I believe they were working on the water lines). Overall, however, the place was pleasantly uncrowded, and the individual sites were well spaced apart.
