12/2024: 1. FC Union Weihnachtssingen/ 1. FC Union Christmas Carol singing

 Am 23.12. war es wieder soweit: das jaehrliche Weihnachtssingen des 1. FC Union. Mitglieder koennen sich um Karten bewerben und Tim dachte wieder uns und gab uns seine 2 Karten, da er Glueck hatte bei der Verlosung aber selbst nicht daran interessiert ist. Das Singen ist so beliebt, dass die 28.000 Karten dafuer verlost werden. Das Wetter war unterirdisch mit viel Regen, der liess aber GsD spaeter nach und die Stimmung war trotzdem toll.

On December 23rd, it was that time again: the annual Christmas Carol singing event of 1. FC Union (side note: Union Berlin is a professional German football club based in Köpenick, Berlin; its origins date back to 1906.) The club's home ground is the Stadion An der Alten Försterei, and as of March 31, 2025, Union Berlin has 70,002 official members. In 2019, Union won promotion to the Bundesliga for the first time in the club's history.). Members can apply for tickets, and Tim thought of us again and gave us his two tickets, as he was lucky in the draw but wasn't interested in attending. The singing is so popular that the 28,000 tickets are being raffled off. The weather was terrible with a lot of rain, but thankfully, it let up later, and the atmosphere was still great.

Zum Abschluss nach rund 2 Stunden kam dann noch das Lied "An der Alten Foersterei", bezugnehmend auf das Heimstadion von Union und zur Melodie eines bekannten Kinder-Weihnachtsliedes.

Finally, after about two hours, the song "An der Alten Foersterei" was sung, referring to Union's home stadium and using the melody of a well-known German children's Christmas carol. 

Anschliessend stroemten die Menschenmassen dann zu den oeffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln und auch die Rueckfahrt mit der S-Bahn war noch sehr stimmungsvoll. Irgendeiner rief immer eine Seite des Liederbuches laut auf und dann wurde von allen einfach mitgesungen. Es war ein wunderbarer Abend mit bester Verpflegung dank leckerem Gluehwein und Bratwurst.

Afterwards, the crowds streamed to public transportation, and the return journey on the S-Bahn was also very atmospheric. Someone would always call out a page of the songbook, and then everyone would simply sing along. It was a wonderful evening with excellent food, thanks to delicious mulled wine and bratwurst.

12/2024: Die Breslauer Zwerge/ The Wroclaw Dwarves (2)

Eine Touristenattraktion in Breslau sind die Breslauer Zwerge (polnisch: Wrocławskie krasnale). Diese sind aus Bronze gegossen, ca 30cm gross und ueberall in der Stadt zu finden - wenn man genau hinschaut.

Der Ursprung dieser Zwerge liegt in der politischen Oppositionsbewegung „Orange Alternative“ welche in den 1980er Jahren mit spontanen Aktionen (zum Beispiel Demonstrationen im Zwergenkostüm) Kritik am kommunistischen Regime in Polen geübt und einen gusseisernen Zwerg (Papa Zwerg) in der Breslauer Altstadt aufgestellt. 

Im Sommer 2001 wurden als als Projekt von Studenten der Kunsthochschule die ersten Zwerge in der Stadt aufgestellt, „Papa Krasnal“ an der ul. Świdnicka war dabei der erste Zwerg. Anfang 2009 gab es bereits 95 Exemplare. Der 300. Zwerg folgte im Sommer 2014 und im Maerz 2025 waren es bereits 974 Zwerge. Es lohnt sich also die Augen offen zu halten. 

A tourist attraction in Wrocław are the Wrocław Dwarves (Polish: Wrocławskie krasnale). They are cast in bronze, about 30 cm tall, and can be found everywhere in the city - if you look closely.

The origins of these dwarves lie in the political opposition movement "Orange Alternative," which criticized the communist regime in Poland in the 1980s through spontaneous actions, such as demonstrations in dwarf costumes, and erected a cast-iron dwarf, known as Papa Dwarf, in Wrocław's Old Town.

In the summer of 2001, the first dwarves were installed in the city as part of a project by students from the art academy. "Papa Krasnal" on ul. Świdnicka was the first dwarf. By the beginning of 2009, there were already 95 dwarves. The 300th dwarf followed in the summer of 2014, and by March 2025, there were already 974 dwarves. So it’s worth keeping your eyes open.

12/2024: Breslau, PL/ Wroclaw, PL (1)

 Ich bin bereits Anfang Dezember nach Berlin geflogen, Andreas kam ein paar Tage vor Weihnachten nach. Gemeinsam mit Dominik und seinem Freund ging es dann fuer ein Wochenende nach Breslau in Polen. Breslau liegt im Bereich Niederschlesiens und hatte seit dem 13. Jahrhundert bis zum Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges eine mehrheitlich deutschsprachige Bevölkerung. Breslau hat noch viele historische Gebaeude und ueber die Stadt verteilt findet man hunderte von kleinen Zwergenskulpturen. Wir sind aber hauptsaechlich wegen des Weihnachtsmarktes hingefahren.

I flew to Berlin at the beginning of December, and Andreas followed a few days before Christmas. Together with Dominik and his friend, we then went to Wrocław, Poland, for a weekend. Wrocław is located in Lower Silesia and had a predominantly German-speaking population from the 13th century until the end of World War II. Wrocław still has many historic buildings, and hundreds of small dwarf sculptures can be found scattered throughout the city. But we went there mainly for the Christmas market.

Gleich nach der Ankunft ging es in die Altstadt, da wir Hunger hatten. Wir fanden ein Restaurant mit den fuer Polen typischen Piroggen und dann ging es einmal ueber den Weihnachtsmarkt, vorbei an all den schoenen historischen Haeuserfronten.

Immediately after arriving, we headed to the old town because we were hungry. We found a restaurant serving the typical Polish pierogi, and then we walked through the Christmas market, past all the beautiful historic house fronts.

Am naechsten Tag schliefen wir aus und nach dem Fruehstueck sind Andreas wieder in die Altstadt, waehrend Dominik und Kai alleine losgezogen sind.

The next day, we slept in, and after breakfast, Andreas went back to the old town, while Dominik and Kai went out alone.

Im Fussgaengerbereich sind viele dieser kleinen Baeckereien zu finden, die direkt am Fenster auf die Hand verkaufen.

In the pedestrian area, you can find many of these small bakeries that sell takeaways directly from the window.

Wir schlenderten dann im hellen einmal in der Altstadt ueber den Weihnachtsmarkt, es gab viele schoene Staende mit Handwerkskunst. Der Weihnachtsmarkt befindet sich am Breslauer Ring, wo man viele wunderbare alte Buergerhaueser sehen kann.

We then strolled through the Christmas market in the old town in the light; there were many beautiful stalls selling handicrafts. The Christmas market is located on Breslauer Ring, where you can see many beautiful old townhouses.

Wir liefen ueber die Dombruecke (Most Turmski), welche ueber die Oder fuehrt, zum Dom in Breslau. Dieser befindet sich auf einer kleinen Insel und wurde von 1244 bis 1341 im Stil der Gotik errichtet. Er ist eines der Wahrzeichen von Breslau, die zwei Türme sind mit knapp 98 Metern die höchsten Kirchtürme der Stadt

We walked across the Cathedral Bridge (Most Turmski), which spans the Oder River, to the cathedral in Wrocław. It is located on a small island and was built in the Gothic style between 1244 and 1341. It is one of Wrocław's landmarks; its two towers, at almost 98 meters, are the tallest church towers in the city.

Auf der anderen Seite der Bruecke findet man die zweigeschossige Stiftskirche zum Heiligen Kreuz und St. Bartholomäus (13.–14. Jahrhundert).

On the other side of the bridge, you will find the two-story collegiate church of the Holy Cross and St. Bartholomew (13th-14th century).

anschliessend besuchten wir die Markthalle

und es ging weiter Richtung Altstadt

Andreas und ich waren dann noch in einem Cafe, da wir doch recht durchgefroren waren.

Anschliessend ging es dann im dunklen nochmal zum Dom. 

Then went back to the cathedral in the dark.

Am Abend trafen wir uns dann mit Kai und Dominik zum Essen, Dominik wollte wie immer nicht fotografiert werden :-).

In the evening we met up with Kai and Dominik for dinner. Dominik, as always, didn't want to be photographed :-).
