road trip 04 - 05/2026: Gallup, NM & Cottonwood, AZ (day 3 & 4)

 Am Tag 3 verabschiedeten wir uns von Santa Fe und fuhren weiter zum nächsten Ziel. Dabei fuhren wir ein Stück entlang der Route 66, die dieses Jahr 100 Jahre alt wird.

On Day 3, we said goodbye to Santa Fe and headed to our next destination, traveling part of the way along Route 66, which turns 100 this year.

Wir haben eine Campsite im Red Rock State Park bei Gallup gefunden. Wir stellten den Anhänger ab und wollten uns anschließend den Ort anschauen. Als Erstes hielten wir am Kulturzentrum, wo es ein paar "Route 66"-Zeichen gab.

We found a campsite at Red Rock State Park near Gallup. We unhitched the trailer and then set out to explore the area. Our first stop was the cultural center, where there were a few "Route 66" signs.

Als wir uns in der Innenstadt einen Parkplatz suchen wollten, stellten wir fest, dass es sich für uns nicht lohnt. Auch hier wieder keine Menschen, leere Cafés und die ganze Stimmung war nicht unsere. Also ging es zurück zum Campingplatz und für Pirate gab es dann einen längeren Spaziergang, bevor es abends stürmte und regnete.

When we tried to find a parking spot in the city center, we realized it wasn't worth it for us. Once again, there was no one around, the cafés were empty, and the whole atmosphere just didn't suit us. So, we headed back to the campsite, and Pirate got a nice long walk in before the wind and rain picked up in the evening.

Am Morgen des 4. Tages verliessen wir dann unseren Platz, und die Fahrt ging weiter.

On the morning of Day 4, we left our spot and continued our journey.

Kurz vor Flagstaff, Arizona, konnten wir zusehen, wie die Temperatur weiter fiel und es regnete. Wir hatten dann plötzlich auch nur noch 3C (37F). Flagstaff liegt auf rund 1900 m/6200 ft Höhe.

Just before Flagstaff, Arizona, we watched the temperature drop steadily as it rained. Suddenly, the temperature was down to just 3°C ​​(37°F). Flagstaff is at an elevation of about 6,200 ft (1,900 m).

Als wir dann am Ziel in Cottonwood ankamen, war die Temperatur immerhin schon wieder bei 19C/ 66F, wir waren jetzt auch wieder ein Stück tiefer bei 1.500 m/ 3.500 ft.

When we finally arrived at our destination in Cottonwood, the temperature was back up to 19°C/66°F; we were at a lower elevation again, too—1,500 m/3,500 ft.

Wir hatten hier einen längeren Aufenthalt im Dead Horse Point State Park gebucht, den wir bereits aus einer vorherigen Reise kannten. Die Stellplätze kann man ab einem Jahr im Voraus reservieren, was auch für manche der Campsites ratsam ist.

We had booked an extended stay here at Dead Horse Point State Park, a place we were already familiar with from a previous trip. Campsites can be reserved up to a year in advance, which is advisable for some of the sites.

Am Abend holte uns der Regen auch hier noch einmal ein.

In the evening, the rain caught up with us here, too.
