road trip 04 - 05/2026: Winslow, AZ (day 11)

 Auch an diesem Tag hatten wir eine längere Strecke vor uns. Unser erstes Ziel war der kleine Ort Winslow, der durch seinen "Standin' on the Corner Park" berühmt ist. Auch hierhin waren es wieder 2 Stunden Fahrt, aber wir wollten es unbedingt mal sehen, schließlich ist dieses Jahr das 100. Jubiläum der Route 66.

We had a long stretch ahead of us that day, too. Our first destination was the small town of Winslow, famous for its "Standin' on the Corner Park." It was another two-hour drive to get there, but we really wanted to see it—after all, this year marks the 100th anniversary of Route 66.

Winslow war früher eine blühende Stadt, an der Route 66 gelegen. Als dann die I-40 nördlich an der Stadt vorbeigebaut wurde, verschwanden viele Läden und vor allem auch Touristen und somit ging es wirtschaftlich deutlich bergab.

Zur Wiederbelebung wurde der Umstand genutzt, dass die Band "Eagles" in ihrem Song "Take It Easy" den Ort Winslow erwähnt. Das von Jackson Browne und Glenn Frey geschriebene Lied enthält den Text: "Nun, ich stehe an einer Straßenecke in Winslow, Arizona, und was für ein herrlicher Anblick sich mir da bietet: ein Mädchen, mein Gott, in einem Ford mit Pritsche, das langsamer wird, um einen Blick auf mich zu werfen. "Somit wurde der Park errichtet; dieser besteht aus einem zweistöckigen Wandgemälde, einem Ford-Pritschenwagen sowie einer Bronzestatue von Ron Adamson mit dem Titel "Easy "; die Figur steht an einer Straßenecke, eine Gitarre an ihrer Seite. Der Park wurde im September 1999 eröffnet. im Oktober 2004 brach im Park ein Feuer aus; die Fassade des Gebäudes und die eigentliche Ecke blieben erhalten, der Rest des Gebäudes brannte leider ab. Im September 2016 wurde im Park eine Statue von Glenn Frey enthüllt, der Anfang desselben Jahres verstorben war.

Als im Jahr 2006 der Animationsfilm "Cars" veroeffentlicht wurde, stieg die Aufmerksamkeit fuer die alte U.S. Route 66 wieder.

Winslow was once a thriving town located on Route 66. However, when I-40 was built to bypass the town to the north, many shops and—above all—tourists disappeared, leading to a significant economic decline.

Revitalization efforts capitalized on the fact that the band The Eagles mentions the town of Winslow in their song "Take It Easy." The song, written by Jackson Browne and Glenn Frey, includes the lyrics: "Well, I'm a-standin' on a corner in Winslow, Arizona, and such a fine sight to see. It's a girl, my Lord, in a flatbed Ford slowin' down to take a look at me."

 The park was created as a result; it features a two-story mural, a flatbed Ford truck, and a bronze statue which resembles Browne titled "Easy"—depicting a figure standing on a street corner with a guitar at his side. The park opened in September 1999. A fire broke out in the park in October 2004; while the building's façade and the corner itself survived, the rest of the structure unfortunately burned down. In September 2016, a statue of Glenn Frey—who had passed away earlier that year—was unveiled in the park.

An der Ecke gibt es 2 Souvenirläden, ein paar wenige Restaurants und das war es dann auch schon. Aber es hat dennoch Charme und falls man vorbeikommt, lohnt sich ein kleiner Abstecher. Das Gemälde auf der Straße ist ein beliebtes Fotomotiv, und die Leute standen tatsächlich Schlange, einige sogar mit Drohnen, um sich von oben fotografieren zu lassen.

There are two souvenir shops and a handful of restaurants on the corner—and that's about it. Still, it has charm, and it's worth a quick detour if you happen to be passing by. The painting on the street is a popular photo spot; people were actually queuing up—some even with drones to take photos from above.

Winslow besitzt heute noch eine Amtrak-Station, welche täglich angefahren wird auf der Route von Chicago, Illinois, nach Los Angeles, California. Der Bahnhof wurde 1929 gebaut und 1930 wurde das benachbarte La Posada Hotel eröffnet. 

Winslow still has an Amtrak station today, served daily on the route from Chicago, Illinois, to Los Angeles, California. The station was built in 1929, and the adjacent La Posada Hotel opened in 1930.

Anschließend ging es weiter zum nächsten Ziel des Tages, da es ja erst mittags rum war.

After that, we headed to the next destination of the day, since it was only around midday.

road trip 04 - 05/2026: Mogollon Rim, AZ (day 10)

 An den Wochenenden blieb ja immer mehr Zeit und so planten wir längere Strecken für diese Tage ein. Heute wollten wir den Mogollon Rim Drive machen, dazu mussten wir aber erst mal rund 2h fahren, um überhaupt dorthin zu kommen. Bloed war, dass das Besucherzentrum geschlossen war, was wiederum nicht überraschend ist, da es überall im Outdoorbereich zu Budgetkürzungen kam und sich auch nur noch wenige Freiwillige finden. Wir hatten auf eine Faltkarte mit Informationen gehooft, so blieb uns nur das Abfotografieren der grossen Karte an einem Infoboard.

We always had more time on weekends, so we planned longer trips for those days. Today, we wanted to drive the Mogollon Rim Drive, but first we had to drive for about two hours just to get there. Unfortunately, the visitor center was closed—though that wasn't surprising, given the budget cuts affecting outdoor areas everywhere and the difficulty in finding volunteers. We had been hoping for a printed map with information, but instead, we had to settle for taking a photo of the large map on the information board.

Unterwegs war die Straße teilweise gesperrt, da ein LKW geborgen werden musste. Sowas ist für uns inzwischen überall ein normaler Anblick, besonders in den Bergen. Viele überschätzen ihre Fahrkünste auf kurvigen, steilen Straßen.

Along the way, the road was partially blocked because a truck had to be recovered. That sort of thing has become a common sight for us everywhere, especially in the mountains. Many people overestimate their driving skills on steep, winding roads.

Von der Aussichtsplattform hat man eine grandiose Aussicht. Leider hatten wir Pech mit den vielen Wolken. Das Wetter in Arizona, aber auch schon in New Mexico, war eher untypisch mit all den Wolken, Wind und teilweise auch Regen. Aber der Winter war schon nicht normal, das wird sich diesen Sommer somit anscheinend durchziehen.

The viewing platform offers a magnificent view. Unfortunately, we were unlucky with the heavy cloud cover. The weather in Arizona—and even back in New Mexico—was rather atypical, with all the clouds, wind, and occasional rain showers. But the winter hadn't been normal either, so it seems this pattern is continuing into the summer.

Wir würden der rot eingezeichneten Straße folgen, die vom Fragezeichen nach oben links abzweigt. Anfangs ist diese noch asphaltiert, später nur noch eine Schotterpiste (Forest Road 300 oder Rim Road). Hierfür wird empfohlen, einen 4x4-Antrieb zu haben und auch bei Regenwetter nicht zu fahren, da die Straße dann zu schlammig wird und man sich leicht festfahren kann. Somit hatten wir immer noch ein Auge auf den Wetterbericht. Die gesamte Strecke ist dann knapp 40 Meilen lang, also rund 65 km, und man soll wenigstens 3 Stunden einplanen, da nicht zu schnell gefahren werden kann.

We would follow the road marked in red, which branches off to the upper left from the question mark. Initially, the road is paved, but later it turns into a gravel track (Forest Road 300 or Rim Road). A 4x4 vehicle is recommended for this route; avoid driving in rainy weather, as the road becomes muddy and it is easy to get stuck. We therefore kept a close eye on the weather forecast. The entire route is just under 40 miles (approx. 65 km) long, and you should allow at least 3 hours for the trip, as you cannot drive very fast.

Auf dem asphaltierten Teil war es an den Aussichtspunkten auch recht voll, das gab sich dann aber an der Schotterstrasse.

It was quite crowded at the viewpoints along the paved section, too, but that eased up once we reached the gravel road.

 Am ersten Aussichtspunkt fand eine Uebung der lokalen "Search and Rescue" Gruppe, also der Notfallrettung, statt und ein Auto hat ein besonders passendes Kennzeichen gehabt. Das Kennzeichen lautete "HYDNSYK", was für "Hide and Seek" steht, den englischen Begriff fürs Versteckspielen.

From the first viewpoint, the local search-and-rescue team was conducting an exercise, and one car had a particularly fitting license plate. The plate read "HYDNSYK," standing for "Hide and Seek."

Wir verlassen den Apache-Sitgreaves-Nationalforest und kommen in den Coconino-Nationalforest.

We leave the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest and enter the Coconino National Forest.

Was typisch für National Forest-Gebiete mit Schotterstrassen ist, sind solche Stellen. Das "Wildcampen", englisch: boondocking, ist hier erlaubt. Man muss sich halt Wasser mitbringen und wenn nicht grad Feuerverbot besteht, darf man auch Lagerfeuer machen. An einer Stelle darf man dann bis zu 14 Tagen kostenlos campen.

Spots like this are typical of National Forest areas with gravel roads. "Wild camping"—or "boondocking"—is permitted here. You simply have to bring your own water, and—provided there isn't a fire ban in effect—you are allowed to build a campfire. You can camp at a single location for up to 14 days free of charge.

Es war eine sehr tolle Strecke und es war angenehm leer, hin und wieder kamen uns Autos und Side-by-Sides entgegen oder wir wurden überholt, aber es war super entspannt und alle waren freundlich und grüßten. Abends haben wir uns dann auf dem Campingplatz am Feuer etwas entspannt.

It was a fantastic route and pleasantly uncrowded; every now and then, we encountered cars and side-by-sides, but it was super relaxed, and everyone was friendly and waved hello. In the evening, we relaxed by the campfire at the campsite.
