Im Juni ging es für uns wieder für 2 Wochen nach Berlin. Es wartete die Fassade des vorderen Hauses auf Verschönerung. Ein lieber Freund mit Ahnung von der Materie unterstützte uns dabei mit Rüstung und Hilfe. Und ich weiß jetzt auch, wie man eine Rüstung aufbaut und wie schwer die einzelnen Teile sind. In June, we headed back to Berlin for two weeks. The façade of the front building was waiting to be spruced up, and a dear friend with expertise in the field helped us out by providing scaffolding and a helping hand. I also now know how to set up scaffolding—and just how heavy the individual parts are. Kudos to anyone who does that every day.
Wir brauchten knapp 7 Arbeitstage. Die Rüstung wurde an einer Seite aufgebaut, dann die Fassade abgekratzt und anschliessend 1x grundiert und dann noch 1x gestrichen. Dann wieder Rüstung abbauen und an der nächsten Seite ging das Gleiche von vorn los. Wir hatten zumindest insofern Glück, dass es nicht geregnet hat, allerdings hatten wir immer um die 38 Grad mit praller Sonne – auch nicht so wünschenswert.
It took us just under seven working days. We set up the scaffolding on one side, power-washed the façade, applied one coat of primer, and then one coat of paint. Then we dismantled the scaffolding and repeated the entire process on the next side. We were lucky it didn't rain, at least, though we did have temperatures around 38 degrees Celsius/100 F with blazing sun—which wasn't exactly ideal either.
Die Eingangstür erhielt ebenfalls eine neue Überdachung, und die Außentreppe wird nächstes Jahr erneuert.
The entrance door also received a new canopy, and the outdoor staircase will be replaced next year.
An der Rückseite haben wir lediglich den Kelleraufgang nicht mehr geschafft, aber das geht nächstes Frühjahr an einem Tag nachzuholen. Ab 14 Uhr heißt es ja immer nach US-Ostküstenzeit Geld verdienen.
The only thing we didn't manage to finish at the back was the basement entrance, but we can take care of it in a single day next spring. After all, from 2 p.m. onwards, it’s time to earn money—based on US East Coast time.
Natürlich passierte noch mehr: Unsere Lieblings-Handwerkerfirma tauschte die Kellertür im Vorderhaus aus und am Bungalow die Eingangstür sowie die restlichen Fenster (Küchenfenster gab es bereits letztes Jahr). Daraus resultiert für uns im Dezember, dass wir rund um die Fenster nochmal neue Tapete/Farbe anbringen, aber das ist kein großes Problem.
Of course, there was more: our favorite contractor replaced the basement door in the front building, as well as the front door and the remaining windows of the bungalow (the kitchen window had already been done last year). For us, this means applying new wallpaper or paint around the windows again in December, but that’s not a major issue.

Die Amazon-Bestellungen stapelten sich, als wir ankamen. U.a. auch ein Hauswasserwerk. Unser Grundstück hat eine eigene Quelle und der vorherige Besitzer hatte seine Pumpe nicht mehr zum Laufen bekommen aus fadenscheinigen Gründen. Andreas hat kurzerhand eine neue Pumpe bestellt, die er eingebaut hat, und nun brauchen wir kein Stadtwasser mehr zum Rasensprengen und zum Gießen der Blumen und der Tomaten. Spart natürlich eine Menge Geld. Im ganzen Garten wurden auch Rasensprenger verteilt, da der Rasen ganz schoen mitgenommen war und ja auch teilweise neu ausgesaet. Um den "Landschaftsbau" können wir uns erst in 2 Jahren wirklich kümmern, bis dahin soll es zumindest erstmal grün aussehen.
Amazon orders were piling up when we arrived—including a domestic waterworks system. Our property has its own spring, but the previous owner hadn't managed to get the pump running—citing flimsy excuses. Andreas simply ordered a new pump and installed it; now we no longer need municipal water to water the lawn, flowers, and tomatoes. That saves a lot of money, of course. We also set up sprinklers throughout the garden, since the lawn was in pretty rough shape and had been partially re-seeded. We won't be able to properly tackle the landscaping for another two years, but until then, we at least want it to look green.
An der Terrassentür musste eine neue Stufe aus Beton angebaut werden, das kam also auch "nebenbei". Und der alte Terrassenboden wurde durch Kaerchern auch nochmal aufgewertet spaeter. Nun müssen wir uns überlegen, ob wir den Boden und die Überdachung in 2 Jahren erneuern. Aber erstmal ist ja alles nutzbar.
A new concrete step had to be added at the patio door, so that was another thing done "on the side." The old patio surface was also spruced up later using a pressure washer. Now we have to consider whether to replace the flooring and the roof in two years' time. But for now, everything is perfectly usable.
Die Jungs kauften sich noch eine Sitzecke für die Terrasse, da sie dank eines Abverkaufs von 600 auf 150 Euro reduziert war. Die musste dann noch aufgebaut werden und die Tomatenpflanzen wurden dann nochmal umgestellt.
The guys also bought a seating area for the terrace, as it had been marked down from 600 to 150 euros in a clearance sale. They still had to assemble it, and they moved the tomato plants around.
Da ja vorne die Einfahrt zur Garage weggerissen und mit Rasen ersetzt wurde, hab ich noch schnell ein paar Gehwegplatten verlegt, damit man bei Regen trockenen Fußes zum Tor und zu den Mülltonnen kommt. Hier geht's jetzt in Huebsch weiter, wenn es einen neuen Zaun gibt.
Since the driveway to the garage was torn up and replaced with grass, I quickly laid some paving slabs so that you can get to the gate and the garbage cans with dry feet when it rains. Things will look nicer here once there's a new fence.
Und für Andreas ein letzter Blick auf den Kastanienbaum (der im unteren Drittel schon braun war und seine Blätter Anfang Juni verlor). Am 1.10. wird der gefällt, wenn ich wieder in Berlin bin.
And for Andreas, one last look at the chestnut tree (which had already turned brown in its lower third and was shedding its leaves by early June). It’s being cut down on October 1st, when I’m back in Berlin.
Man sieht also, dass wir noch ein paar Jahre gut beschäftigt sein werden, solange wir in Berlin sind. Aber das ist ok, man sieht die Veränderungen jetzt schon deutlich. Im kommenden Jahr steht die Außentreppe an, die Heizkörper im vorderen Haus müssen getauscht werden und wenn es klappen sollte, vielleicht auch den Zaun entlang der Straße erneuern. Aber erstmal heißt es wieder, Geld für all das ansparen.
So, as you can see, we’ll have our hands full for a few more years while we’re in Berlin. But that’s fine; the changes are already clearly visible. Next year, the outdoor staircase is on the agenda, the radiators in the front part of the house need replacing, and—if things work out—we might also renew the fence along the street. But for now, the priority is saving up the money for all of that.
