Charleston, SC (2) - Fort Sumter NM

Am 2. Tag in Charleston ging es vorrangig um Geschichte. Wir hatten die letzten Wochen schon ganz schoen gebangt, da aufgrund der bisher laengsten Regierungs-Schliessung auch alle Nationalparks, Nationalmonumente etc geschlossen waren. Gluecklicherweise wurde dies am 25.01. aufgehoben, und so langsam kehrte wieder Normalitaet ein. Somit ging es fuer uns am Morgen zu Fuss zum Fort Sumter National Monument.

The 2. day in Charleston was mainly about history. For the past weeks we really worried that this trip couldn't be done. The US had the longest government shutdown in history so far, which means that also National Parks, National Monuments etc were closed as well. Luckily the problem got resolved on January 25th, and everything returned to normal. So we walked the few blocks to the Fort Sumter National Monument.

Der Eintritt zum Fort selbst ist kostenlos, allerdings kommt man nur mit einer Faehre dorthin. Somit bezahlten wir $23 pro Person fuer die Fahrt. Da wir noch etwas Zeit hatten, bis unsere Faehre ablegte, schauten wir uns noch im kleinen Museum um.

There are no entrance fees to the Fort itself but there is a catch: The Fort can be reached only by ferry, and the ferry ride had a fee of $23 per person. Since we had some time to spare until our ferry would leave, we explored the little museum.

Waehrend der Fahrt ist auch ein Voluntier Ranger auf dem Boot und erzaehlt ueber die Geschichte.

Fort Sumter

Fort Sumter wurde als Ergebnis des Krieges von 1812 in Auftrag gegeben (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/1812#Britisch-Amerikanischer_Krieg). Der Bau begann 1829 und wurde 1861 beendet. Das Fort hat deshalb besonderes geschichtliches Interesse, da hier der Amerikanische Buergerkrieg begann. Am 12. April 1861 fand hier der erste Angriff statt.

Wir sind die erste Besuchergruppe an dem Tag.

Our group are the first visitors this day.

Einige Besucher der ersten Gruppe duerfen dann immer helfen, die Fahne zu hissen. An diesem Tag war es dazu besonders windig.

Some people of the first group each day are allowed to hep to raise the flag, that particular day we also had some high winds.

Anschliessend machten wir uns an den Rundgang. Die Zeit auf der Insel ist dazu begrenzt, inkl. Hin- und Rueckfahrt dauert eine Tour rund 2h, davon sind schon rund 45min insgesamt fuer die Fahrten abzuziehen.

Next we explored Fort Sumter. One has only a limited time on the island, one tour is about 2 hours with a total of 45mins ferry ride back and forth.

Ueberall stehen noch alte Kanonen herum, und natuerlich viele Schautafeln zur Geschichte.

There are lots of old canons as well as information boards about the history of the Fort.

Im schwarzen Gebaeude befindet sich ein Souvenirladen und auch ein weiteres kleines Museum.

The black building houses a gift shop as well as another small museum.

Und dann war es auch schon wieder Zeit fuer die Rueckfahrt, die Zeit war viel zu schnell um.

And it was already time for returning to the ferry, time went by way too fast.
