Am 31.3. fuhren wir dann die doch etwas laengere Strecke von Terlingua nach San Antonio. Wir mussten noch einen kleinen Umweg fahren, um Pirate abzuholen. Die Hundesitterin hatte uns aber uber die letzten Tage immer wieder kleine Videos und auch Fotos geschicktt, und sie fand Pirate wirklich angenehm zum hueten, er hatte wohl auch eine gute Zeit :-). Wir fuhren somit mit Sonnenaufgang los morgens, und es war super kalt, nur knapp ueber 0 Grad. Dazu gab es einen ueblen Wind, natuerlich von vorn und ueberall tanzte der Sand.
On 03/31 we had a long drive ahead from Terlingua to San Antonio. We also had to make a detour to pick up Pirate from his dogsitter who sent us several videos and photos of him during the past days. She really enjoyed having Pirate over, and he seemed to have a nice time, too. We left with the sunrise and it was sooo cold, barely above freezing. In addition, we had quite the nasty wind (that always came from the driving direction), and the dust was dancing around us.
Solche Border Patrol Gebaeude sieht man hier in Texas oft, wir waren recht frueh unterwegs und so war sie noch geschlossen. Normalerweise wird man angehalten und die Papiere ueberprueft.
Such Border Patrol buildings one can see quite often here in Texas. We passed by pretty early so it was still closed. Usually, one has to stop and show one's papers.

Nach 520 Meilen (840 km) bzw 10 Stunden Fahrt kamen wir dann in San Antonio an. Wir hatten einen Stellplatz auf dem KOA in San Antonio reserviert, den wir schon einmal vor 2 Jahren nutzten.
After 520 miles/ 10 hours driving time we arrived in San Antonio. We had booked a spot at the KOA in San Antonio which we knew from a previous stay 2 years ago.
Across from us, that little gem was parked. We had a chat with the owners who converted the former delivery truck by themselves. The glass doors are tornado-rated, and the deck is folded up when driving. It was pretty cool.
Zum Abend hin sind wir dann nach San Antonio hineingefahren, um am River Walk zu essen - eine Traition inzwischen.
Later in the evening, we drove into San Antonio downtown to have dinner at the River Walk - a tradition for us.

Wir waren nicht allzu spaet zurueck, und fielen dann auch einfach nur muede ins Bett,
When we were back at the campground, we called it a day and went to bed early.
Am naechsten Morgen schliefen wir laenger, insbesondere Dominik. Andreas und ich nutzten die Moeglichkeit auf dem Campingplatz um Waesche zu waschen.
We slept in the next morning, especially Dominik. Andreas and I used the opportunity to get some laundry done.
Kurz vor Mittag ging es dann auf zur ersten Mission. San Antonio hat 5 Missionen, 3 davon kennen wir schon (Mission Concepción, Mission San José, The Alamo). Somit waren noch 2 uebrig zum anschauen fuer dieses Mal. Begonnen haben wir mit der Mission San Juan.
Shortly before noon, w drove to the first mission we wanted to visit that day. San Antonio has 5 missions, three of which we already visited 2 years ago (Mission Concepción, Mission San José, The Alamo). So we started this day with the Mission San Juan.

Auch hier sind auf dem ganzen Gelaende immer wieder Infotafeln zu den Gebaeuden und dem Alltag damals.

1756 lebten hier 256 Bekehrte in Adobe Huetten, 1790 waren es schon nur noch 58 - diese aber nun schon in Steinhaeusern. Zu Hoch-Zeiten hatte die Mission 1000 Rinder, 3500 Schafe und Ziegen, sowie 100 Pferde. Das Problem war aber, dass das Land nicht wirklich naehrstoffreich war, um Dinge anzubauen, selbst nicht, all in Damm mit Bewaesserungssystem gebaut wurde.
In 1756, 256 neophytes were living here in Adobe huts, in 1790 this number had dropped down to only 58 - while they were now living in stone quarters. In 1762, the mission owned 1.000 cattle, 3.500 sheep and goats, and 100 horses. A problem was that the soil wasn't really fertile which also didn't change although a dam and an irrigation system were installed.
Die Wege waren schmal und so haben wir die Masken immer griffbereit gehabt, wenn andere Besucher an und vorbeikamen.
The path was rather narrow and so we kept the masks in hand when we had to pass other visitors.
Anschliessend ging es dann weiter zur letzten Mission.
