Achtung: langer Bericht!/ Attention: long report!
Ende September ging es für Andreas, Pirate und mich wieder zurück nach Hause in die USA. Der Rückweg gestaltete sich sehr umständlich, da wir mit Pirate nur die Wahl hatten, entweder in New York oder Philadelphia an der Ostküste zu landen (8 h Flug ab Frankfurt) oder in Los Angeles an der Westküste (11,5–12 h Flugzeit). Da wir mit Pirate ja dazu noch knapp 3 h vor Abflug am Schalter sein müssen, um die Papiere prüfen zu lassen, zum Wiegen etc., und nach Ankunft dauert es auch gerne nochmal 1 h, bis wir mit ihm und Gepäck durch die Grenzkontrolle kommen, standen mindestens 16 h im Käfig für uns nicht zur Diskussion und wir entschieden uns für den Flug von Frankfurt nach New York.
Vorher mussten wir dann aber noch die 6 Stunden mit einem Mietauto von Berlin nach Frankfurt fahren, wo wir am Flughafen in einem Hotel übernachtet haben. Nach knapp 4 Monaten war der Abschied von Dominik wieder extra schwer, aber der letzte Abend in Deutschland wurde dadurch versüßt, dass ich mich mit Diana zum Essen und Quatschen treffen konnte. Andreas hielt die Stellung mit Pirate im Hotel, und Dianas Mann Paul verzichtete an dem Abend auf sein geliebtes Fussballtraining, um beim Sohn zu bleiben. Wir hatten einen wunderbaren Abend, danke somit an unsere Männer.
Am Morgen ging es dann zum Flughafen, und wir hatten eine wirklich tolle, supernette Dame am Schalter, die alles mit Pirate erledigte. Blöd war dann nur, dass, als wir am Gate ankamen, die Nachricht kam, dass der Flieger um 2 Stunden aufgrund eines technischen Defekts verspätet sein würde. Noch blöder war, dass Pirate und der andere mitfliegende Hund die beiden Stunden dann bei Regen auf dem Rollfeld in ihren Käfigen standen. Witzig war wiederum, dass wir mit dem älteren Ehepaar, das uns gegenüber saß, eine gute Unterhaltung hatten und dabei rausfanden, dass sie die Besitzer des anderen Hundes waren und dass wir eine Menge Gemeinsamkeiten hatten (sie waren auch viele Jahre in Kanada und dann in die USA gezogen).
At the end of September, Andreas, Pirate, and I headed back home to the USA. The journey back proved quite complicated: with a dog, we had only the option of landing in either New York or Philadelphia on the East Coast (an 8-hour flight from Frankfurt) or in Los Angeles on the West Coast (an 11.5–12-hour flight). Since we also had to be at the check-in counter with Pirate almost 3 hours before departure to have his paperwork checked, be weighed, etc. It often takes another hour after arrival to get him and our luggage through immigration. At least 16 hours in his crate was out of the question for us, so we opted for the flight from Frankfurt to New York.
Before that, however, we had to drive the six hours from Berlin to Frankfurt in a rental car, then spend the night in a hotel at the airport. Saying goodbye to Dominik after almost four months was especially hard, but the last evening in Germany was sweetened by meeting up with Diana for dinner and a chat. Andreas held down the fort at the hotel with Pirate, and Diana's husband, Paul, skipped his beloved football practice that evening to stay with their son. We had a wonderful evening, so thank you to our men.
In the morning, we went to the airport, and we had a really great, super nice lady at the counter who took care of everything for Pirate. The only downside was that when we arrived at the gate, we learned the plane would be delayed by 2 hours due to a technical problem. Even worse, Pirate and the other dog on board then had to stand in their crates on the tarmac in the rain for those two hours. On the other hand, it was funny that we had a good chat with the older couple sitting opposite us and discovered they owned the other dog and that we had a lot in common (they had also lived in Canada for many years before moving to the USA).
Auch der Flug war teilweise recht turbulent und Pirate sowie der andere Hund hatten mein volles Mitgefühl. Ich war super froh, als wir ihn am Flughafen in New York endlich wieder sahen, aber er war natürlich super gestresst. Er durfte dann ja auch nicht aus der Box raus bis wir draußen waren. Das hat mich dann gestresst, da ein Koffer nicht mitgekommen ist, eine Tasche komplett zerrissen war und wir somit erstmal zum Lost-and-Found-Schalter mussten, um das zu melden. Der Mitarbeiter war dann aber so nett und hat uns erlaubt, Pirate aus dem Käfig zu lassen, da es länger dauerte. Die Zeit zog sich wie ein Kaugummi. Dann waren wir so naiv, in der Annahme, dass Andreas wie gewohnt mit dem Flughafenzug zur Mietauto-Station fahren und dann mit dem Auto zurück zum Flughafen kommen könnte. Da hat uns dann der Flughafenmitarbeiter gleich gewarnt, dass es aufgrund des Verkehrs locker 3 Stunden dauern kann und wir lieber mit den beiden Gepäckwagen und dem Hund im Käfig dahin fahren sollen. Das brachte wieder Schwäissausbrüche, da der Wagen mit Hundekäfig nicht durch die Fahrstuhltüren passte, um zur Bahn zu kommen, und es somit immer Hundekäfig abladen, mit dem Wagen hochfahren, dann anschliessend den Käfig samt Hund (zusammen 40 kg) in den Fahrstuhl hieven und hochfahren, raushieven und wieder aufladen. Und dann mit 2 riesigen Gepäckwagen in den supervollen Zug zu kommen usw. GsD bin ich schon grau und Andreas ohne Haare, spätestens dieses Erlebnis hätte es sonst erledigt. Das Gleiche war dann an der Mietautostation nur beim runterfahren. Als wir draußen waren, konnte Pirate wenigstens raus und etwas laufen, denn es dauerte nochmal eine Stunde, bis wir das Auto hatten. Die Flugverspätung und das ganze Gerede am Flughafen haben uns insgesamt 4,5 h gekostet und so hieß es, bis tief in die Nacht fahren, um das wieder rauszuholen.
The flight was quite turbulent at times, and I felt so sorry for Pirate and the other dog. I was overjoyed when we finally saw him again at the airport in New York, but of course, he was incredibly stressed. He wasn't allowed out of his crate until we were outside. This stressed me out because one suitcase hadn't arrived, a bag was completely ripped, and we had to go to the Lost and Found counter to report it. The employee there was kind enough to let Pirate out of his crate since it was taking longer than expected. Time dragged on endlessly. Then we naively assumed Andreas could take the airport train to the rental car station as usual and then drive back to the airport. The airport employee immediately warned us that this could easily take three hours due to traffic and that we should drive there with the two luggage carts and the dog in his crate. This caused more bouts of sweating, as the trolley with the dog crate wouldn't fit through the elevator doors to reach the train. So it was a constant cycle of unloading the crate, taking the trolley up, then heaving the crate and dog (a total of 40 kg) into the elevator and up, heaving them out again, and loading them all up. And then trying to get onto the packed train with two enormous luggage trolleys, and so on. Thank goodness I'm already gray and Andreas is bald; otherwise, this experience would have been the last straw. The same thing happened at the rental car station, only on the way down. Once we were outside, Pirate could at least get out and walk around a bit, because it took another hour to get the car. The flight delay and all the hassle at the airport cost us a total of 4.5 hours, so we had to drive until late into the night to make up for it.

One tire had way too little air pressure, and there was no gas station for ages; on top of that, it was 26°C outside and incredibly humid.
Für uns ging es am Abend noch bis nach Gettysburg in Pennsylvania, und wir waren froh, als wir gegen Mitternacht endlich im Bett waren – da waren wir schon seit rund 24 h wach.
Unser Motel in Gettysburg war wirklich gut, und so waren wir am nächsten Morgen auch GsD ausgeruht, als wir um 8 aufstanden. Nach dem Frühstück erreichten wir nach ein paar Minuten Fahrt das Besucherzentrum des Gettysburg National Military Parks.
In the evening, we drove all the way to Gettysburg, PA, and were glad to finally get to bed around midnight, as we had already been awake for about 24 hours.
Our motel in Gettysburg was really good, and thankfully, we were well-rested when we got up at 8 the next morning. After breakfast, we reached the Gettysburg National Military Park visitor center after a short drive.
Gettysburg stand schon lange auf der Wunschliste. Wir mögen es, geschichtsträchtige Orte zu besuchen, und der Amerikanische Bürgerkrieg interessiert mich, seit ich als Kind die Serie "Fackeln im Sturm" gesehen habe, die auf einer Buchvorlage von John Jakes beruht. Der US-Bürgerkrieg fand zwischen 1861 und 1865 statt.
Der Bürgerkrieg wurde – vereinfacht gesagt – durch die Abspaltung der Südstaaten (Konföderation) von den Nordstaaten (Union) ausgelöst, da die Südstaaten die Sklaverei nicht abschaffen wollten und es somit zu einer tiefen politischen, sozialen und wirtschaftlichen Spaltung kam, die wiederum zu einem Krieg führte. Die Schlacht von Gettysburg fand vom 1. bis zum 3. Juli 1863 bei Gettysburg in Pennsylvania statt und war mit mehr als 43.000 Opfern, davon über 5.700 Gefallenen, eine der blutigsten Schlachten auf dem amerikanischen Kontinent überhaupt.
Gettysburg had been on our bucket list for a long time. We enjoy visiting historical sites, and I've been interested in the American Civil War ever since I watched the series "North and South" as a child, based on John Jakes's book series. The American Civil War took place between 1861 and 1865.
The Civil War was—to put it simply—triggered by the secession of the Southern states (Confederacy) from the Northern states (Union) because the Southern states refused to abolish slavery, leading to a deep political, social, and economic divide that ultimately resulted in war. The Battle of Gettysburg took place from July 1 to 3rd, 1863, near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and with more than 43,000 casualties, including over 5,700 killed, it was one of the bloodiest battles ever fought on the American continent.

Gegen eine kleine Gebühr kann man sich im Besucherzentrum einen Film anschauen, danach geht es in einen Raum, wo man das Gettysburg Cyclorama sehen kann. Dieses sehr beeindruckende 360-Grad-Ölgemälde hat eine Länge von 115 Metern und eine Höhe von 13 Metern Es wurde in den 1880er Jahren vom französischen Künstler Paul Philippoteaux geschaffen und stellt den Höhepunkt der Schlacht von Gettysburg dar, Picketts Angriff am 3. Juli 1863 dar. Es zeigt einen dreidimensionalen Vordergrund mit Trümmern und Artefakten, der den Betrachter in die Szenerie eintauchen lässt.
For a small fee, you can watch a film in the visitor center, after which you enter a room where you can see the Gettysburg Cyclorama. This very impressive 360-degree oil painting is 377 feet long and 42 feet high. Created in the 1880s by the French artist Paul Philippoteaux, it depicts the climax of the Battle of Gettysburg, Pickett's attack on July 3, 1863. It features a three-dimensional foreground with debris and artifacts, immersing the viewer in the scene.

Als wir alles im Besucherzentrum angeschaut hatten, ging es dann auf die Autotour. Im Besucherzentrum gibt es dafür eine Karte, und wenn man der aufgezeichneten Route folgt, folgt man dem zeitlichen Schlachtablauf der 3 Tage. Entlang der Strecke stehen unzählige Gedenksteine für die verschiedenen Regimenter, aber auch für die beteiligten Bundesstaaten. An wichtigen Orten der Schlacht sind Informationstafeln aufgestellt, und man kann sich auch einen kostenlosen Audio-Guide auf das Handy laden, der einem an jedem vorgegebenen Halt die Geschehnisse vorträgt. Man kann allerdings auch eine Bustour buchen oder individuelle Tourguides beauftragen.
After we had seen everything in the visitor center, we set off on the driving tour. The visitor center provides a map, and if you follow the marked route, you trace the chronological sequence of the three days of battle. Along the way, there are countless memorial stones for the various regiments and the participating states. Information panels are set up at key locations of the battle, and you can also download a free audio guide to your phone, which narrates the events at each designated stop. Alternatively, you can book a bus tour or hire private tour guides.

Der ganze Turm war voller dieser Fluginsekten, die waren super laut beim Fliegen. Wenn ich richtig liege, ist es eine "spotted lanternfly" (gefleckte Laternenfliege), eine invasive Art, die aus China eingeschleppt wurde und den Farmern die Ernten wegfrisst (Weintrauben, Äpfel).
The whole tower was swarming with these flying insects; they were incredibly loud when they flew. If I'm not mistaken, it's a spotted lanternfly, an invasive species introduced from China that is eating farmers' crops (grapes, apples).

Wir machten Stop 15 als letzten Halt unserer Rundfahrt. "High Water Mark" wird von Historikern als der Ort benannt, der den Wendepunkt des Krieges darstellte, als Unionstruppen am 3. Tag der Schlacht die Konföderierten Soldaten, die unter dem Kommando von General Robert E. Lee waren, besiegten und diese in die Flucht schlugen. Der Krieg ging zwar noch 2 Jahre weiter, aber es gab keine annähernd so tödliche Schlacht mehr und am Ende siegten die Unions-Streitkräfte und die USA blieben als Einheit erhalten.
We made Stop 15 the last stop on our tour. "High Water Mark" is considered by historians to be the site that marked the turning point of the war, when, on the third day of the battle, Union troops defeated and routed the Confederate soldiers under the command of General Robert E. Lee. Although the war continued for another two years, there was no other battle nearly as deadly, and in the end, the Union forces triumphed, and the United States remained a unified nation.

Wir verliessen das Schlachtfeld am späten Nachmittag und hatten dann noch 1650 Meilen/ 2650 km vor uns quer durchs Land bis nach Hause. Die Fahrt führte über Pittsburgh, Columbus, Indianapolis, St. Louis und Kansas City bis in die Umgebung von Denver. Auf jeden Fall gab es keine Platzprobleme im Auto, und die Sitze waren superbequem, sodass es auch gut auszuhalten war. Sightseeing haben wir nicht mehr gemacht, weil wir einfach nach Hause wollten. Einziger Halt war nochmal an einem Aussichtspunkt auf den Arch in St. Louis.
We left the battlefield in the late afternoon, with 1,650 miles (2,650 km) ahead of us, driving across the country to get home. The drive took us through Pittsburgh, Columbus, Indianapolis, St. Louis, and Kansas City to the Denver area. There was definitely no problem with space in the car, and the seats were incredibly comfortable, so the journey was quite bearable. We didn't do any more sightseeing because we just wanted to get home. Our only stop was at a viewpoint overlooking the Arch in St. Louis.
In Denver mussten wir noch Lebensmittel kaufen, und bei einem Einkauf bei Costco fand ich einen eindrucksvollen Weihnachtskalender ($189 plus Steuern, wurde jedoch nicht gekauft).
In Denver, we still had to buy groceries, and during a shopping trip at Costco, I found an impressive Advent calendar ($189 plus tax, but we didn't buy it).
Und wir konnten es kaum glauben: Es war die erste Oktoberwoche und wir hatten noch bunte Blätter an den Espen. Normalerweise sind die Bäume in unserer Umgebung Mitte September kahl. Ich hab mich unglaublich gefreut!
And we could hardly believe it: It was the first week of October, and the aspens still had colorful leaves. Normally, the trees in our area are bare by mid-September. I was incredibly happy!
Nochmal ein Blick in den Kofferraum nach dem Ausladen (wir hatten die 3. Sitzreihe komplett umgekappt und die 2. Reihe teilweise). Der Wagen musste am nächsten Tag dann noch zur Mietstation am Flughafen Denver zurückgebracht werden.
One last look in the trunk after unloading (we had completely folded down the 3rd row of seats and partially folded down the 2nd row). The car then had to be returned to the rental station at Denver Airport the next day.
