road trip 2022 (10): Mammoth Cave NP, KY

Tag 14 verbrachten wir auch wieder im Mammoth Cave NP, wir hatten eine weitere Tour gebucht. Wir hatten uns fuer die Historische Tour entschieden, bei der man durch den zuerst entdeckten Teil des riesigen Hohlensystems wandert. Auch diesmal gab es wieder eine Einfuehrung und den Hinweise, dass die Tour nichts fuer Besucher mit Gehproblemen oder sehr starkem Uebergewicht ist aufgrund der vielen Stufen und teilweise sehr engen Gaenge (und bei manchen musste man sich tatsaechlich gut verdrehen um durchzupassen, selbst Dominik).

Diese klassische Mammoth Cave Tour besucht viele der historischen Gebiete, die Mammoth Cave ursprünglich berühmt gemacht haben. Diese Tour führt durch Tunnel, die Menschen seit Tausenden von Jahren benutzt haben, und erkundet nicht nur riesige Räume, die der Mammoth Cave ihren Namen gaben, sondern steigt auch an viel engeren Stellen tief im Inneren der Höhle hinab. Bitte beachten Sie, dass diese Tour Hunderte von Treppen und mehrere steile Anstiege auf- und absteigt, was für viele Besucher schwierig sein kann, da es keine alternativen Routen gibt. Diese Tour ist ideal für Menschen mit Interesse an Geschichte und Abenteuerlust.

We also spent day 14 at the Mammoth Cave NP since we had booked another guided tour. We were looking forward to the Historic Tour which is focused on the areas that had been explored first. Again, the lead ranger gave a first introduction and reminded visitors that this tour wouldn't be suitable when having walking difficulties or being rather obese due to the many stairs and some extremely narrow pathways (where even Dominik had to twist himself to fit through). 

The tour is described as follows on the website of the NP:

This classic Mammoth Cave Tour visits many of the historic areas that originally made Mammoth Cave famous. Going through tunnels that humans have used for thousands of years, this tour not only explores huge rooms that gave Mammoth Cave its name, but also descends to much tighter places deep inside the cave. Please note that this tour ascends and descends hundreds of stairs and several steep inclines, which can be difficult for many visitors, as there are no alternative routes. This tour is ideal for people with an interest in history and a sense of adventure.

Von der Sammelstelle waren es keine 10min Fussweg bis zum Hoehleneingang.

It was a 10 minutes walk from the gathering place to the entrance of the cave.

Auch hier waren wir wieder recht schnell unterwegs um den Weg zu schaffen, aber wie auch bei der letzen Tour erfuhren wir viele interessante Dinge ueber die Hoehle und vor allem wie sie entdeckt wurde und dann begehbar gemacht wurde.

Again, we had quite a high pace but the ranger told us many interesting facts about the cave, the discovery, and how the trails had been established.

Am Anfang war die Hoehle sehr hoch und man fuehlte sich ueberhaupt nicht eingeengt.

In the beginning, the cave's ceiling was pretty high and not narrow at all.

Und dann kam der spassige Abschnitt: es wurde eng und die Decke wurde recht tief.

And then the fun began: the way became narrow and low.

An einer Stelle blieben wir alle stehen und der Ranger entzuendete eine Laterne, ueber einen Schalter loeschte er die Strahler, die den Weg ausgeleuchtet hatten. Dann bat er um Ruhe, um das wegpacken aller Telefone und er loeschte am Ende auch die Laterne. Fuer eine Minute standen wir in absoluter Dunkelheit und vollkommener Stelle, sehr sehr interessante Erfahrung. Anschliessend stellte er die Strahler wieder an und wir liefen weiter.

At one spot, the ranger lit a lantern and switched off the regular lights. He asked the visitors to put away their phones and to be silent. Then he turned off the lantern as well, and for a minute we all stood there in absolute darkness and silence, it was such an amazing experience. After that, he turned on the light again and we continued our walk.

An diversen Stellen sahen wir Inschriften an den Decken und Waenden von den Maennern, die die Hoehle ausgekundschaftet haben.

Every now and then, we noticed inscriptions on the ceiling and on walls from the men who explored the caves.

Und auch hier mussten wir am Ende wieder ueber Seifenmatten laufen, um die Schuhsohlen von Pilzsporen zu befreien.

At the end of this tour, we gain had to walk across soapy mats to remove any fungi spores on the shoe soles.

und den Rest des Tages verbrachten wir mit Nichtstun :-)

Im Nachhinein betrachtet, haetten wir hier mehr Zeit verbringen sollen anstatt in der Gegend der Lake of the Ozarks unsere Zeit zu "verschwenden". Die Hoehlen sind super interessant, und die Campingplaetze im Park auch wirklich toll. Somit kommt der Mammoth Cave auf die Liste der Orte, die wir nochmal besuchen wollen.

In hindsight, we should have spent more time here than in the area of the Lake of the Ozarks. The caves are so interesting, and the campgrounds in this NP are very beautiful. Mammoth Cave NP definitely made it on the list of places we would like to visit again.
