road trip 08 - 10/2024: Theodore Roosevelt National Park, day 3-5

 Wir verliessen den Campground am Morgen und fuhren dann zu nur wenigen Minuten entfernten Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Der Park wurde zu Ehren von Theodore Roosevelt, dem 26. Praesidenten der USA, errichtet, welcher hier eine Ranch hatte. Die Landschaft ist hauptrangig sogenanntes Oedland (engl: Badlands) und besteht aus mehreren Teilen. Der National Park wurde 1978 gegruendet und besteht aus 3 Teilen, wobei der Nord- und der Suedteil rund 130km voneinander entfernt sind, der dritte Teil ist die Elkhorn Ranch von Theodore Roosevelt, die aber sehr abgelegen ist und schwer zu erreichen ist. Bedeutend ist, dass hier in den 1950er Jahren wieder Bisons angsiedelt wurden, nachdem sie fast vollstaendig ausgerottet wurden. Ausserdem findet man jede Menge Praeriehunde, Mustangs, Kojoten und auch Gabelantilopen.

We left the campground in the morning and drove to Theodore Roosevelt National Park, just a few minutes away. The park was built in honor of Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th President of the USA, who had a ranch here. The landscape is primarily so-called badlands and consists of several parts. The national park was founded in 1978 and consists of 3 parts, with the north and south parts being around 130km apart. The third part is Theodore Roosevelt's Elkhorn Ranch, which is very remote and difficult to reach. Significant is that bison were resettled here in the 1950s after they were almost completely wiped out. You can also find prairie dogs, mustangs, coyotes, and pronghorn antelopes.

Das Wetter war nicht das Beste, aber immerhin kein Regen und so fuhren wir durch den Suedteil des Parks. Normalerweise ist es eine Rundtour, aber ein Teil der Strecke war wegen Strassenbauarbeiten gesperrt und man kam dort somit auch nicht hin.

The weather wasn't the best, but at least there was no rain, so we drove through the southern part of the park. Normally it's a circular tour, but part of the route was closed due to road construction work so you couldn't get there.

Wir fuhren dieses Teil an 2 Tagen hintereinander, da am folgenden Tag das Wetter besser war und so sahen wir zwar vieles doppelt, aber irgendwie entdeckte man dann doch immer neues. Ich fuege die Fotos in diesem Bericht zusammen in der Reihenfolge des Stops.

We drove this part on two days in a row because the weather was better the following day and so we saw a lot twice, but somehow we always discovered something new. I am putting the photos together in this report in the order of the stops.

Am Besucherzentrum findet man die Malteserkreuzhütte, welche für Roosevelt ein vorübergehendes Zuhause war bevor er die Elkhorn Ranch kaufte.

At the visitor center, you will find the Maltese Cross Cabin, which was the temporary home for Roosevelt before he purchased the Elkhorn Ranch.

Als naechstes kommt man an den Praeriehunden vorbei, die hier eine sehr grosse Flaeche ihr zu Hause nennen.

Die Felsformationen sind super interessant und wir hielten auch wirklich oft an.

Auf dem Rueckweg hielten wir an der Peaceful Valley Ranch und lernten vom Ranger noch eine Menge ueber die Fast-Ausrottung der Bisons sowie deren Neuansiedlung.

On the way back we stopped at the Peaceful Valley Ranch and learned a lot from the ranger about the near-extinction of bison and their resettlement.

In Medora sahen wir uns auch noch den Chimney Park an, wo man frueher das "De Mores Packing Plant" finden konnte. Der Schornstein ist mit ein paar Grundmauern das einzige, was uebrigegeblieben ist.

1883 wurde hier vom aus Frankreich immigrierten Marquis de Morès eine Verpackungsanlage fuer Rindfleisch gebaut. Er hoffte, durch seine innovativen Ideen finanzielle Einsparungen erzielen zu koennen durch das schlachten vor Ort und dem eliminieren von Zwischenhaendlern. Das Gelaende bestand aus Schlachthaus, ein Krafthaus, eine Küferei, eine Düngemittelkammer, drei Eishäuser, ein Kühl- und Lagergebäude, eine Ladeplattform und Auffangställe. Leider scheitert das Verpackungsunternehmen und die Einrichtungen wurden 1886 geschlossen.

In Medora, we also visited Chimney Park, where you used to find the “De Mores Packing Plant”. The chimney and a few foundation walls are the only thing left.

In 1883, a packaging plant for beef was built here by the Marquis de Morès, who immigrated from France. He hoped to use his innovative ideas to achieve financial savings by slaughtering on-site and eliminating middlemen. The site consisted of a slaughterhouse, a powerhouse, a cooperage, a fertilizer room, three ice houses, a cooling and storage building, a loading platform, and reception stables. Unfortunately, the packing company failed and the facilities closed in 1886.

Die naechsten beiden Naechte verbrachten wir auf dem Medora Campground, da es hier nun wieder freie Stellplaetze gab. Der Campground war wirklich schoen. Allerdings war bei der ersten Ankunft ein Schreck da, denn unsere site war mit Sheriff-Pickups vollgeparkt und auch ein Rettungswagen war da. Wir mussten rund gut eine Stunde warten, bevor wir auf unseren Platz konnten.

We spent the next 2 nights at the Medora Campground, as there were now some free campsites. The campground was really nice; however, there was a shock when we first arrived because our site was full of sheriff's pickup trucks parked and there was also an ambulance there. We had to wait about an hour before we could get to our site.

An ice cream cone was also a must in Medora.

An Tag 5 fuhren wir dann die 130 km in den Nordteil des Parks, das Wetter spielte leider erstmal nicht mit.

On day 5 we drove 130 km to the northern part of the park, unfortunately, the weather didn't cooperate at first.

Die erste Stunde im Park hat es es geregnet, dass wir nicht aussteigen konnten/wollten. GsD hoerte es gegen Mittag auf und so konnten wir uns doch noch alles in Ruhe anschauen.

It rained for the first hour in the park so we couldn't/didn't want to get out. GsD stopped it around midday so we were able to look at everything.

Die Wege waren alle superschlammig und man rutschte leicht weg, gsd hatten wir auch Wechselschuhe dabei. Der Untergrund ist groesstenteils Ton und der haftete sehr gut an den Sohlen.

The paths were all super muddy so it was easy to slip, but we also had a change of shoes in the camper. The surface is mostly clay and it adhered very well to the soles.

Als es weiter durch North Dakota ging, sahen wir nun auch das erste Mal die grossen Oel-Fracking-Tuerme live, spaeter gab es dann nur noch Felder.

As we continued through North Dakota, we saw the large oil fracking towers live for the first time, later there were only fields.

Am Abend erreichten wir dann die kanadische Grenze, alles verlief ganz entspannt und wir hatten eine sehr nette Unterhaltung (das ganze Gegenteil von vielen US-Uebergaengen, wie wir auch auf dem Rueckweg wieder feststellen wuerden).

In the evening we reached the Canadian border; everything was relaxed and we had a very nice conversation (the complete opposite of many US crossings, as we would notice again on the way back).

Nur ein paar Minuten hinter der Grenze fanden wir den Regional Campground in Oungre, der wirklich toll war. Hier gab es nicht nur den Campground sondern auch Baseballfeldern, ein Schwimmbad, ein Postamt und auch ein kleiner Imbiss, was wir an diesem Abend auch nutzten. Die Pommes waren fuer die Menge superguenstig und total lecker.

Just a few minutes across the border we found the Regional Campground in Oungre, which was really great. There was not only the campground but also baseball fields, a swimming pool, a post office, and a small snack bar, which we also used that evening. The fries were super cheap for the amount and totally delicious.

Abends sassen wir dann noch lange am Feuer draussen, unser erster Abend in Kanada seit 7.5 Jahren.

In the evening, we sat outside by the fire for a long time, our first evening in Canada in 7.5 years.
