road trip 04 - 05/2026: Petrified Forest National Park, AZ (day 11)

 Das zweite Ziel für diesen Tag war der Petrified Forest National Park, der noch einmal rund eine Stunde Fahrt von Winslow entfernt lag. Wir hatten den Park bereits 2016 besucht, damals noch mit Dominik, der dort auch seinen Junior Ranger abgelegt hat. Kaum zu glauben, wie schnell 10 Jahre tatsächlich vergangen sind. Eine kleine Erinnerung:

The second destination for the day was Petrified Forest National Park, located about another hour's drive from Winslow. We had previously visited the park in 2016—back when Dominik was with us and earned his Junior Ranger badge there. It is hard to believe how quickly ten years have actually passed. A little reminder:

On the way to the park, the heavens suddenly opened, and it started to pour.

Wir starteten unseren Besuch im Norden des Parks. Das Besondere am Petrified Forest NP ist, dass Hunde auf allen Wanderwegen willkommen sind – eine absolute Ausnahme.

We began our visit in the northern part of the park. What makes Petrified Forest National Park special is that dogs are welcome on all hiking trails—a rare exception.

Der Petrified Forest National Park wurde nach seinen großen Vorkommen an versteinertem Holz benannt. Er umfasst eine Fläche von etwa 900 Quadratkilometern und umfasst sowohl Halbwüsten-Strauchsteppen als auch stark erodierte, farbenprächtige Badlands. Die Fahrt entlang der Straße durch den Park hat eine Länge von 45 km. Wir hielten an den verschiedenen Aussichtspunkten und es war GsD auch nicht wirklich überlaufen.

Petrified Forest National Park was named after its extensive deposits of petrified wood. It covers approximately 346 square miles and encompasses both semi-desert shrub steppes and heavily eroded, colorful badlands. The drive along the road through the park spans 28 miles. We stopped at the various viewpoints, and thankfully, it wasn't really overcrowded either.

Die nächsten 15 Minuten saßen wir dann im Auto, draußen ging nichts mehr.

We spent the next fifteen minutes sitting in the car; outside, everything had come to a standstill.

Puerco Pueblo

Der nächste Halt war am Puerco Pueblo. Dort führt ein 0,5 km langer Rundweg durch Überreste eines Pueblos (ca. 1250–1400 n. Chr.) mit rund hundert Räumen, und am südlichen Ende des Weges sind Felszeichnungen (Petroglyphen) zu sehen.

The next stop was at Puerco Pueblo. There, a 0.3-mile loop trail leads through the remains of a pueblo (approx. 1250–1400 AD) comprising around one hundred rooms, and rock art (petroglyphs) can be seen at the southern end of the trail.

Newspaper Rock

Der Aussichtspunkt am Newspaper Rock überragt zwei große Felsblöcke, an deren dunklen unteren Seiten mehr als 650 Felszeichnungen zu sehen sind.

The Newspaper Rock viewpoint overlooks two large boulders, on whose dark lower faces more than 650 petroglyphs can be seen.

Inzwischen war es wieder bewölkt, und so kamen die Farben am Stop bei den Tepees leider nicht so wirklich zur Geltung.

By then, it had clouded over again, so unfortunately, the colors didn't really stand out at the stop by the tepees.

Man findet immer wieder ganz tolle Pflanzen auf dem trockenen Boden.

You can keep finding truly wonderful plants on the dry ground.

An allen Wanderwegen findet man tolle Schilder, die darauf hinweisen, dass man bei Einbruch der Dämmerung bitte wieder im Auto sein soll. Dieses warnt vor hungrigen Coyoten.

Along all the hiking trails, you will find funny signs advising you to be back in your car by dusk. This one warns of hungry coyotes.

Mesa Loop Scenic Road.

Hier gibt es auch einen 1,6 km langen Rundweg.

Here one can find a 1-mile loop trail.

Hier sieht man zum ersten Mal richtig gut die riesige Anzahl an versteinerten Baumstücken. 

Here, for the first time, you can clearly see the vast number of fossilized tree fragments.

Crystal Forest

Als Nächstes liefen wir den 1,2 km langen Rundweg durch den "Crystal Forest“. Dieser Bereich wurde  nach den wunderschönen Kristallen benannt, die in den versteinerten Baumstämmen zu finden sind. 

Next, we walked the 0.75-mile loop trail through the "Crystal Forest." This area was named after the beautiful crystals found within the fossilized tree trunks.

Am südlichen Ende des Parks gibt es dann noch ein Museum (das war bereits geschlossen) und den Long Logs Trail. Inzwischen war es kurz nach 18 Uhr, und so machten wir uns auf den Rückweg, der noch 3 Stunden Fahrt bedeutete.

At the southern end of the park, there is also a museum (which was already closed) and the Long Logs Trail. By then, it was just past 6 p.m., so we headed back—a journey that involved another three hours of driving.

Eine Zufallsentdeckung war noch dieses Drive-Thru-Schild in Holbrook, als wir tankten.

Another chance discovery was this drive-thru sign in Holbrook while we were getting gas.
