road trip 07-09/2026: City of Rocks National Reserve & Castle Rocks State Park, ID (days 3-5)

Diese Rundreise folgte auf den Spuren unserer Reise im Sommer 2020, damals unter Corona und ohne grosse Planung, da die ursprünglich geplante Rundreise durch Kanada ausfiel. City of Rocks NR und Castle Rocks SP haben wir damals auch besucht, und das ließ sich gut mit der Aufteilung zwischen Arbeit und etwas Angucken verbinden. Unser Campsite lag im Castle Rock SP, und die City of Rocks National Reserve lag nur wenige Fahrminuten entfernt. 

This road trip followed in the footsteps of our summer 2020 journey—undertaken during the pandemic with little advance planning, as our originally scheduled trip to Canada had been canceled. We visited City of Rocks National Reserve and Castle Rocks State Park back then, too, and the locations offered a good balance between working and sightseeing. Our campsite was in Castle Rock State Park, while City of Rocks National Reserve was just a short drive away.

Durch dieses Gebiet verlief der sogenannte California Trail, auf dem ab Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts die erste große Welle europäischstämmiger Siedler in der Region ankam. Die Goldentdeckung bei Sutter's Mill im Jahr 1848 veranlasste Zehntausende Menschen dazu, auf der Suche nach neuen Chancen in den Westen aufzubrechen. Zwischen 1848 und der Fertigstellung der transkontinentalen Eisenbahn im Jahr 1869 nutzten rund 240.000 Menschen diese Überlandrouten mit all ihren Strapazen und Ungewissheit in Kauf.

Dieser Felsen ist noch ein historisches Überbleibsel davon: Auf dem Camp Rock hinterließen die durchziehenden Siedler ihre Namen.

The so-called California Trail ran through this area; it was the route taken by the first major wave of settlers of European descent arriving in the region from the mid-19th century onwards. The discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill in 1848 prompted tens of thousands of people to head west in search of new opportunities. Between 1848 and the completion of the transcontinental railroad in 1869, approximately 240,000 people used these overland routes, braving all the associated hardships and uncertainties.

This rock is a historic remnant of that era: settlers passing through left their names on "Camp Rock."

Es gibt viele Felsformationen, die bei Kletterern sehr beliebt sind (allerdings ist Klettern nicht auf allen Felsen erlaubt).

Many rock formations are very popular with climbers (although climbing is not permitted on all of them).

Diese Formation sieht aus wie ein riesengroßes Faltenbrot. Auch hier sieht man immer wieder viele Kletterer an den Felswänden.

This formation looks like an enormous, elongated pull-apart bread. Here, too, you often see many climbers on the rock faces.

Den Rest des Tages verbrachten wir auf dem Campingplatz.Pirate bevorzugte das Innere des Campers mit Klimaanlage. Wir stellten den Ventilator draußen in den Schatten, da es so heiß war.

We spent the rest of the day at the campsite. Pirate preferred the camper's air-conditioned interior. We set up the fan outside in the shade, as it was so hot.

Tag 4/ day 4

Der nächste Tag war geprägt vom Dunst der vielen Waldbrände; er war sichtbar, und man konnte ihn auch extrem riechen. Somit blieben wir den ganzen Tag auf dem Campingplatz und brauchten mit der Arbeit nicht so zu hetzen.

The next day was thick with the haze from the many forest fires; it was visible, and the smell was overpowering. As a result, we stayed at the campsite all day and didn't have to rush our work.

Zum Abend hin wurde es wieder besser. / It got better in the evening.

Tag 5/ day 5

Es war wieder unheimlich warm und wir machten noch einen Abstecher zur Wanderstrecke im Castle Rock SP. 

It was incredibly hot again, and we made a quick detour to the hiking trail at Castle Rock State Park.

Es ging anschliessend weiter zum Thousand Springs State Park in Idaho. Die Ernte war in vollem Gange (vor allem Weizen in diesem Gebiet), und so hatten wir immer wieder grosse Landwirtschaftsmaschinen vor uns.

We then continued on to Thousand Springs State Park, Idaho. The harvest was in full swing (especially wheat in this area), so we frequently found ourselves driving behind large agricultural machinery.
