road trip 04 - 06/2024: Grand Canyon NP (AZ), day 30

 Wir waren vor Jahren schon einmal im Grand Canyon NP (South Rim), und nun fuehrte uns ein Tagesauflug noch einmal her. Die Fahrtzeit von Cottonwood zum Osteingang betrug rund 2.5h, also sind wir recht frueh los.

We had already been to Grand Canyon NP (South Rim) years ago, and now a day trip took us here again. The drive time from Cottonwood to the east entrance was around 2.5 hours, so we left quite early.

Der Grand Canyon ist eine Schlucht des Colorado River, die oft als eines der Weltwunder bezeichnet wird. Der Park umfasst ein Gebiet von 4,926.08 km2 (1,901.972 sq miles) und hatte 2023 mehr als 4,7 Millionen Besucher. Das Gebiet wurde 1919 als Nationalpark deklariert (15. Nationalpark in den USA), nachdem es bereits 1882 beim damaligen Senator Benjamin Harrison bei einem Versuch scheiterte, dann waere er nach Yellowstone und Mackinac der dritte Nationalpark in den Vereinigten Staaten gewesen. 1979 wurde der Grand Canyopn von der UNESCO zum Weltkulturerbe erklärt. 

Die meisten Besucher sehen sich den Ostrand an, da er leichter zugaenglich (befahrbar) ist, den Nordrand kann man auch besuchen, das bleibt weiterhin erstmal auf unserer Wunschliste.

The Grand Canyon is a canyon of the Colorado River that is often referred to as one of the wonders of the World. The park covers an area of ​​4,926.08 km2 (1,901,972 sq miles) and had more than 4.7 million visitors in 2023. The area was declared a national park in 1919 (the 15th national park in the USA), after a failed attempt by then Senator Benjamin Harrison in 1882. It would then have been the third national park in the United States after Yellowstone and Mackinac. In 1979 the Grand Canyon was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. 

Most visitors look at the eastern edge as it is easier to access (drive on), you can also visit the northern edge, which remains on our wish list for now.

Wir hatten Glueck und mussten nur knapp 10 Minuten warten bis wir im Park waren, das kann im Sommer gern auch mal deutlich laenger dauern.

We were lucky and only had to wait about 10 minutes until we were in the park, which can take a lot longer in the summer.

Wir sind durch den Osteingang hineingefahren und von dort dem Desert View Drive gefolgt. Entlang der malerischen Strecke mit der Laenge von 37 km (23 Meilen) findet man diverse Aussichtspunkte und Picknickplaetze. Natuerlich gibts auch jede Menge Wanderwege, aber wir hatten Pirate dabei und mit Hund sind die Wanderwege nicht erlaubt (abgesehen von den Temepraturen, die auch sehr hoch waren).

We entered through the east entrance and from there followed Desert View Drive. There are various viewpoints and picnic areas along the scenic route, which is 37 km (23 miles) long. Of course, there are plenty of hiking trails, but we had Pirate with us and that's not allowed with a dog (apart from the temperatures, which were also very high).

Unser erster Halt war am Desert View Turm, dieser Halt ist sehr beliebt und trotz riesigem Parkplatz kann man hier schon Probleme bekommen je nach Tageszeit. Man kann auf den Turm kostenlos hinauf, aber das haette eine recht lange Wartezeit bedeutet: Alle 20 min werden jeweils 25 Personen hinaufgelassen und dafuer gab es eine lange Schlange. So wichtig war uns das nicht, da wir schon einmal oben waren.

Our first stop was at the Desert View Tower, this stop is very popular and despite the huge parking lot you can have problems here depending on the time of day. You can go up the tower for free, but that would have meant a pretty long wait: 25 people were allowed up every 20 minutes and there was a long queue. It wasn't that important to us since we had already been up there before.

Und wir naeherten uns dem "Yaki Point", ab hier, inklusive dem riesigen Market Plaza-Parkplatz, ist die Parkplatzsuche die Hoelle in der Hauptsaison und besonders den Wochenenden.

Next, we approached "Yaki Point", from here, including the huge parking lot at the Market Plaza, finding parking is hell in the high season and especially on the weekends.

Wir sind dann den noch den Rim Trail gelaufen, da dieser mit Hund erlaubt war, man hat fantastische Aussichten auf den Canyon hier.

We then walked the Rim Trail, as dogs were allowed on this trail; you have fantastic views of the canyon here.

Auf dem Boden sind die mit den Grand Canyon verbundenen Indianerstaemme aufgezeichnet: Zuni, Navajo, Apache, Yavapai, Hualapai, Havasupai, Southern Paiute.

The Indian tribes associated with the Grand Canyon are recorded on the ground: Zuni, Navajo, Apache, Yavapai, Hualapai, Havasupai, Southern Paiute.

Am spaeten Nachmittag ging es dann mit vielen Eindruecken zurueck zum Campingplatz.

In the evening, we returned to the campsite with a lot of impressions.
