road trip 04 - 06/2024: Cottonwood, Dead Horse Ranch SP & Prescott (AZ), day 25 & 26

An den Arbeitstagen muessen wir immer spontan sehen, wie wir den Tag gestalten. Andreas hatte am spaeten Vormittag etwas Luft und so fuhren wir zur Main Street von Cottonwood, der Ort in dem sich unser Campingplatz befand. Der Ort ist recht klein, aber bot dafuer viele wunderbare Restaurants etc.

On working days we always have to spontaneously see how we plan the day. Andreas had some air late in the morning so we drove to Main Street in Cottonwood, where our campground was. The place is quite small, but offers many wonderful restaurants, etc.

Bei Walmart merkte man, der Memorial Day steht vor der Tuer. Dies ist ein US-amerikanischer Feiertag, der jedes Jahr am letzten Montag im Mai zu Ehren der im Krieg für das Vaterland Gefallenen begangen wird und inoffiziell markiert er den Start des Sommers.

At Walmart, you could tell that Memorial Day was just around the corner.

Am Nachmittag fuhren wir dann zu den kleinen Seen bei uns im Park, die sind sehr beliebt bei Anglern aber auch bei Spaziergaengern. Baden etc ist aber verboten. Der Name des Parks hat uebrigens eine nette Geschichte, die man auf der Webseite des Parks findet:

"Über den Dead Horse Ranch State Park

Die Geschichte des Parknamens beginnt mit der Familie Ireys, die Ende der 1940er Jahre aus Minnesota nach Arizona kam, um eine Ranch zu kaufen. Auf einer der Ranches entdeckten sie ein großes totes Pferd, das am Straßenrand lag. Nachdem er zwei Tage lang Ranches besichtigt hatte, fragte Dad Ireys die Kinder, welche Ranch ihnen am besten gefiel. Die Kinder sagten: „Der mit dem toten Pferd, Papa!“ Die Familie Ireys wählte den Namen Dead Horse Ranch und später, im Jahr 1973, als Arizona State Parks den Park erwarb, machten die Ireys die Beibehaltung des Namens zur Verkaufsbedingung."

In the afternoon we drove to the small lakes in our park, which are very popular with anglers and walkers. However, swimming, etc. is prohibited. By the way, the name of the park has a nice story, which can be found on the park's website:

"About Dead Horse Ranch State Park

The story of the park's name begins with the Ireys family, who came to Arizona from Minnesota looking for a ranch to buy in the late 1940s. At one of the ranches, they discovered a large dead horse lying by the road. After two days of viewing ranches, Dad Ireys asked the kids which ranch they liked the best. The kids said, “the one with the dead horse, dad!” The Ireys family chose the name Dead Horse Ranch and later, in 1973, when Arizona State Parks acquired the park, the Ireys made retaining the name a condition of sale."

Abends gabs es dann Essen bei dem Restaurant des Weingutes, das wir tagsueber in der Stadt gesehen hatten, die Aussicht war wirklich schoen.

In the evening we had dinner at the restaurant of the winery that we had seen in the city during the day, the view was really beautiful.

Am fruehen Nachmittag fuhren wir nach Prescott, da wir uns die Innenstadt anschauen wollten aber vor allem wegen Watson Lake. Die Fahrt ist ebenfalls sehr interessant, da es eine sehr kurvige Strasse durch die Berge ist.

In the early afternoon, we drove to Prescott because we wanted to see the city center but especially because of Watson Lake. The drive is also exciting as it is a very winding road through the mountains.

Am Watson Lake wanderten wir etwas entlang der Uferlinie um den wunderbaren See von weiter oben zu sehen, die Felsformationen waren dabei besonders interessant.

At Watson Lake we hiked along the shoreline to see the wonderful lake from higher up; the rock formations were particularly interesting.

Danach fuhren wir nach Prescott Downtown und liefen dort etwas herum um sie uns anzusehen.

Prescott hat eine sehr wechselhafte Geschichte seit der Besiedlung durch Einwanderer. Das Gebiet war urspruenglich besiedelt vom Stamm der Yavapai bevor Europaeische Siedler sich ab 1862 hier niederliessen. Grund war der Fund betraechtlicher Mengen an Gold und Silber. Durch immer mehr Siedler eskalierten dann die Kaempfe mit den Indianerstaemmen der Yavapai und Apachen. 1863 wurde das Arizona Territorium gegruendet und das frisch erbaute Fort Whipple als Landeshauptstadt ernannt. Immer mehr Minen wurden eroeffnet und 1864 wurde nun Prescott zur Landeshauptstadt ernannt. 1867 wurde die Hauptstadt nach Tucson verlegt, 1877 wieder zurueck nach Prescott und 1889 wurde Phoenix zur endgueltigen Hauptstadt ernannt. Prescott hatte sich zu einer typischen "Wil West" Stadt entwickelt und zu den berühmten Bewohnern gehörten auch Doc Holliday und Virgil Earp aus der Schießerei im O.K. Corral in Tombstone. Prescott blieb allerdings lange eine provisorische Holzstadt, die im ersten Jahrzehnt des 20. Jahrhunderts mehrmals nieder brannte bevor sie dann aus Ziegeln wieder aufgebaut wurde. Prescott behauptet von sich selbst das „Älteste Rodeo der Welt“ zu haben.

Afterward, we drove to Prescott downtown and walked around to take a look.

Prescott has had a very checkered history since settlement by immigrants. The area was originally populated by the Yavapai tribe before European settlers settled here in 1862. The reason was the discovery of considerable amounts of gold and silver. With more and more settlers, the fighting with the Yavapai and Apache Indian tribes escalated. In 1863, the Arizona Territory was founded and the newly built Fort Whipple was named the state capital. More and more mines were opened and in 1864 Prescott was named the state capital. In 1867 the capital was moved to Tucson, in 1877 it was moved back to Prescott, and in 1889 Phoenix was named the final capital. Prescott had become a typical "Wil West" town and its famous residents included Doc Holliday and Virgil Earp from the Shootout at the O.K. Corral in Tombstone. However, Prescott long remained a makeshift wooden town, burning down several times in the first decade of the 20th century before being rebuilt from brick. Prescott claims to have the “Oldest Rodeo in the World.”

Diese Hauswand hat einen sehr traurigen Hintergrund. Sie dient als Erinnerung an das Yarnell Hill Fire bei welchem 19 von 20 Mitgliedern der Granite Mountain Hotshots, Teil der Feuerwehr von Prescott, am 30. Juni 2013starben, sie kaempften gegen den Flächenbrand, der zwei Tage zuvor südlich von Prescott ausgebrochen war.

This house wall has a rather sad background. It serves as a memorial to the Yarnell Hill Fire, in which 19 of 20 members of the Granite Mountain Hotshots, part of the Prescott Fire Department, died on June 30, 2013, battling the wildfire that broke out south of Prescott two days earlier.

Wir fuhren dann am Abend wieder zurueck und in Cottonwood fanden wir durch Zufall ein supertolles kleines Mexikanisches Restaurant. Ganz unauffaellig, beliebt bei den Einheimischen und die ganze Familie hat dort gearbeitet. Wir waren danach dann fast jeden Abend dort essen.

We then drove back in the evening and in Cottonwood, we found a great little Mexican restaurant. Quite unfancy, popular with the locals, and the whole family worked there. We ate there almost every evening after that.
